They told Sammy Davis the same thing, he could not openly date white women. When he defied them later, they drove him off the road which he lost an eye in that wreck, so the story goes. On the gay hollywood theory, you also have to think there is a degree of lower wages paid with the promise of protection, a safe work place. These are gated and guarded work places after all.
