For the second example of the rose curve: R=2sin(3theta). How did you determine -2 over 2 for first petal? When do you know to make it negative even when you don't have -a? TIA

he picked 360° and divided that by the number of petals to find the distance between the petals. if you're wondering why he picked 360°, that's because, when you're graphing the rose curves, and just polars in general, you're dealing with a circle which has a full rotation of 360°. So using 360° would essentially allow for equal distance between all rose petals. hope this helps
