🚀 GammaOS Next – Progress Update
🕑 Added 2025-08-23 10:13:02 +0000 UTCHey everyone,
It’s been a little while since the last GammaOS Next release, so I wanted to give you all a proper update on what I’ve been working on behind the scenes. A lot has been happening - not just improvements to the existing builds, but also brand-new projects, ports, and some really exciting firsts for Android handhelds.
🔹 Android 14 Porting
I’ve been deep in the process of moving GammaOS over to Android 14. This isn’t just a straight version bump - A14 brings in new changes to the system UI, display pipeline, and security model, so I’ve been making sure GammaOS keeps its optimizations, low-latency tweaks, and handheld-friendly features intact. Early builds are already running, and I’m slowly ironing out issues around taskbar behavior, performance, and compatibility with existing apps.
🔹 New Device Ports
One of the biggest parts of the work lately has been expanding device support:
Mangmi Air X - a really interesting device that I’ve been bringing up GammaOS on.
Anbernic D8300 series - these are new and quite locked-down, but I’ve been cracking away at them.
MagicX Zero40 - Bringing a special version of GammaOS Core (calling this GammaOS Core+) which takes advantage of the touch screen and aspect ratio.
All are now booting with GammaOS and getting the same polish as the supported lineup. Each new device means new quirks in bootloaders, partitions, and hardware configs - so it’s always a mix of reverse-engineering and fine-tuning.
🔹 Bootloader Cracking on Anbernic D8300
This one deserves its own mention. The D8300 series shipped with a heavily locked bootloader, making custom firmware basically impossible at first glance. I’ve been diving into it with Ghidra and other low-level tools, and progress has been very promising. This is laying the groundwork not just for GammaOS, but for the whole community to unlock more potential from these devices.
🔹 Global Shader / BFI / EQ - a First for Android
This is one of the milestones I’m most excited about:
Global shaders (for post-processing effects across all games/emulators).
Black Frame Insertion (BFI) to reduce motion blur and improve clarity.
System-wide EQ for tuning audio exactly how you want.
And the best part? This is the first time ever these features have been brought to Android at a global level. No app hacks or emulator-specific tweaks - truly integrated at the system layer.
🔹 Other Improvements & Tweaks
Ongoing memory optimizations (for smoother performance on lower-end devices).
Taskbar/Launcher3 refinements (based on A14 changes and community feedback).
Continued testing and polish on existing GammaOS Next builds to keep them stable.
🗓 What’s Next
I’ll be sharing more frequent build drops and previews as the Android 14 port matures, and once the D8300 work reaches a usable state I’ll make sure you all get early access to it.
Thanks again for your support - it’s what makes all of this possible. GammaOS is growing into something much bigger than just a custom ROM, and I’m excited to share the next steps with you all.

I received 2x Mangmi Air today, is it safe to apply GammaOS to it now due to different LCD versions? Thanks for the information.

I really appreciate all your work ... GammaOS is fantastic from where I've seen it working. But for some reason, I just screw things up switching to it so it is just something I'll watch from afar.

I’ve never tried Gamma on any of my devices but the 477M version sounds promising. I’ll definitely be upgrading to paid membership when early access gets closer to release!
