Time for the OG T820 handheld to get some love. The RG556 was the first of this family, and with this update it finally gets the same modern GammaOS Next experience as the newer siblings. smoother UI, better system behavior, proper shader pipeline, dock friendly behavior and a much nicer audio story through GammaEQ. 😄
As usual, this build is Patreon exclusive for now and will go public later.

💥 What is new in v1.2.0 for RG556?
On top of the original T820 release, this build gives the RG556 a proper next gen refresh:
Android 14 / LineageOS 21 base
A cleaner, more responsive system stack with better scheduling, app compatibility and less background noise.Global Shader Pipeline
System level filters such as CRT style and scaling shaders, controlled via a Shader Quick Settings tile.

⚖️ Lite vs Full on RG556
Same approach as the other T820 devices:
Full
Includes Google Play Store, Google Play Services and Google dependent components
Good if you rely on Google sync, Play Store and GMS only apps
Lite
Ships without Google services or Play Store
Good if you want a focused handheld, use sideloading or alternative stores and do not want Google in the background
The GammaOS feature set is the same in both. Lite vs Full is simply how tightly you want the device tied to the Google ecosystem.

Installation follows the standard T820 flow, just like the RG556, RG CUBE, RG406H, RG406V, RG476H and RG Slide:
Download GammaOS Next v1.2.0 for RG556 from the release link above.
Extract all .7z.00x parts together using 7 Zip on Windows.

Flashing will wipe user data, so make sure you have backups first. 💾

huh i had to run the unlock bootloader bat again, despite being on (previous) gamma already

everything appears to work in the flash tool but then when my rg556 resets i get "NO VALID OS FOUND" tried a redownload to rule out transient corruption of the files

yeah, same here, the system resets. status on the tool reads "reset" so i disconnect the USB cable. the stock image runs its config routine, i reboot, and it is still the stock image.

I've done everything up to using the research download tool and nothing is happening. I've gone through all steps again a couple times but nothing happens when I tried to download the flash. What am I doing wrong?

Could you create an issue here? https://github.com/TheGammaSqueeze/GammaOSNext/issues Also, the scraping might be a Daijisho issue itself, nit strictly GammaOS. For the WiFi, try turning Bluetooth off and see if that helps

A couple of issues with my RG556 on this release (scraping incomplete after multiple rounds, won't change game names in my FBNeo folder, and wifi turns off randomly and needs to be turned off and on again to connect). Is this the best place to report these or should I head elsewhere?

Yo he notado lo mismo en la mía, creo que es fallo general.

Hola, llevo unos días probrando la versión 1.2 en mi RG556 y hay varios fallos. Primero: La pantalla NO se apaga al conectar vía hdmi (nueva función) y segundo: Al despertar la consola en modo reposo, los botones L2 y R2 se vuelven locos y hay que presionarlos para que paren. Si alguien más ha visto estos fallos agradecería que lo confirmaran.

I have a problem with this firmware: my Anbernic RG556 doesn't produce any sound through the console's speakers, regardless of whether I'm playing a game or in the menu. However, alarm sounds and Bluetooth headphone audio do work

I have problems with wifi, the wifi connection disconnected and can't be connected again. I have to reboot my devices to get it back. And then when it happens again same story
