Getting Schooled - Proverbs 31 Woman 101
🕑 Added 2025-10-27 18:15:42 +0000 UTCWhat is a “Proverbs 31 Woman?” This concept has been used in many ministries and has frequently put a huge weight on women. Have we misunderstood why this is written? And how does that reveal how other cultural ideas have retroactively changed our view of scripture?

I love you guys! One comment. Skye made a joke about his phone going off. While it was clearly in jest, I wonder why we're ok with those jokes about women. He would never make a joke like that and another race or ethnicity or nationality. Why is it ok to make that joke about women?

Just saw this book title on sale “In Search of the Proverbs 31 Man: The One God Approves and a Woman Wants “. Cuts both ways now I guess. Geesh!

Skye, i am curious your take on Proverbs in general. If they are often misquoted, how do you view/read/interpret the book of proverbs? What value do you find in it?

I heard a rabbi remind his audience that Ruth was Solomon’s great grandmother and that this chapter described her life, even as a widow.

It’s also important that this also talks about caring for the poor, I wonder how many evangelical Bible studies include that?
Emily Anderson
I came to comment this but you beat me to it! 😆

I have recently been thinking about Proverbs and see the first 9 chapters contrasting two “women” wisdom and the harlot- how the remainder of the book basically lays out the wise vs the harlot and the last verses is the culmination of wisdom, but also how this should be seen in the bride of Christ

Great conversation! I am so curious as to understand more what it means to be created male/female in the image of God without just saying it’s physical but also not going to the extreme and roles that the conservative Christian culture has taken it. I’d love to hear more thoughts on this!

Did we ever consider that the mother didn't want her son to get married? She's put together an impossible list of requirements for a wife. Maybe she either wanted him to remain single or thought he would be a better ruler without a wife.

My good friend and pastor Dr Michael Easley of DTS/Moody was the first person to suggest that P31 was about wisdom. It set me free! I was so nervous when I started this episode and was so relieved at the analysis. I mean…if P31 is about a wife, where is P32???? Ha!

It is also instructive to remember that both Ruth AND Boaz exemplify the life of wisdom described by Proverbs 31. That "man of valor/ man of noble charcter" term Kaitlyn mentioned is actually the term used to describe Boaz. And when considered in tandem with Proverbs 31, it becomes evident that reducing a life characterized bywisdom to an impossible gendered checklist is folly.

Thank you for reminding me that Wisdom personified in Proverbs os female. That’s a great antithesis for those who insist that women are inherently evil/inferior/easily manipulated.

Loved this discussion! You know, I've heard a lot of women's Bible studies on the Proverbs 31 woman. But no one ever seems to preach on Jael ...

Looking online, by 1984 I find newspaper ads for women's Bible Studies on "the Proverbs 31 woman," based on a book called "The Queen of Hearts" by Jill Briscoe. Churches sometimes held these studies for women in connection with exercise classes, tips on creative dressing, and "creating a happy Christian atmosphere in the home." There's a copy of the book available on the Internet Archive website.

The fact that Skye didn’t know Lysa Terkeurst just felt like such quintessential Skye…

We need a new theme song since we can no longer say that "Duke is where she's at."

Thank you for explaining this so well!

I’d love to hear an episode on headship! I feel it’s kind of a superfluous topic if both husband and wife are seeking and following Jesus— how/why is it that the husband has more responsibility to steer the ship? I don’t know what to believe about it all, but I definitely feel tension surrounding the topic.

I just sent a mailbag question about this!! Thank you so so much for this!!
