Loving the pod so far. Your discussion about peasant revolts and the eventual end of serfdom got me wondering how medieval people would have thought about "rights," compared with how we use that term today. Obviously there was the divine right of kings, as well as various types of property and usage rights, like the right to build fishing weirs or hold a market... But how did people think about civil and human rights in the medieval world? (Surprise, the Wikipedia page on the history of human rights skips straight from "Ancient" to "Modern"...)

This isn't related to the episode but I have a questions about cathedrals. Were they also places of worship for congregations of lay people during the middle ages? I live in York and the Minster does double duty as a place of worship and a tourist attraction which must be strange if you're there to pray, but is that an usual situation or have cathedrals always had this kind of double role
