It's been a while since I've posted. I've set it so no one will be charged for March. I want to catch back up and get you guys some decent posts. I certainly haven't forgotten about you guys, honestly I think up a lot of posts that would be cool in theory, but then they end up being way too big of a time investment (to where I figure I oughtta just work on videos), or it doesn't seem "interesting enough" and I just quit all together. Good ol' "perfect is the enemy of good."
Anyways, I plan to post here more often about just simple things that are interesting me lately.
Here's some things I've been interested in lately:
■Steak tartare, yukke, yukhoe, beef carpaccio, ossenworst - i.e. more palatable ways of saying "Raw meat." Eating raw meat probably sounds gross depending on where you're from. Living in Japan, eating raw meat or raw egg yolks are no longer gross to me. Actually, as I left the cafe where I was writing this, I came across this ad for a rice bowl with raw horse meat and raw egg on top (see above)
Recently, just as a temporary experiment, I've been eating a lot of raw meat. Some days, I'm at 100% raw meat. I found a good source of high quality grass fed beef (no hormone injections or antibiotics etc) that I'm comfortable with eating raw. I'll make this into a steak tartare style dish and eat it like that. It's hard to describe, but I feel a lot more focused after eating this. The first time this happened I was pretty interested because I had no expectation - I simply wanted to try making steak tartare, but a couple minutes later and then for a couple hours, I felt a boost in focus. It felt something like a small cup of coffee, but no jitters and no crash. If I ate it with the expectation that I would feel good, I'd probably have chalked it up to placebo effect.
Anyways, so I've been experimenting with this lately and the good effect seems pretty consistent. I have a friend who tried this after I talked to him about it and he felt a similar boost. (Doubt I'll make a video on this, pretty sure most people would think I went off the deep end.)
I suspect the effect is more from the raw fat. The short ribs I get will differ in their fattiness, so when I'm able to get a big chunk of raw beef fat, I can feel something going on my head just a couple minutes after eating it - the small cup of coffee effect lasts for a while.
The main thing I like is I feel much lighter than when eating cooked meat. After a big meal I usually feel sleepy, but if it's raw meat I don't get that at all.
It's not all perfect though, though I feel good, my performance at the gym seems to have suffered. Then, I felt a bit better after eating cooked meat. Could have been a simple matter of not getting enough (easily absorbed) calories.
I did a bit of digging just in case and found this:
But this was most likely due to a lack of folate, though. (As in proper folate, not folic acid).
Really doubt that's something I would have to worry about since I eat a lot of raw egg yolks. That, and ...I'm not anemic.
■Red light - Just uploaded the Red Light video. Check it out if you haven't already! Honestly I've been feeling pretty great with this. I didn't want to oversell the benefits so I didn't mention this in the video, but I've been setting it right at the top of my bed and have the red light on my head for 20 minutes at night. I'm not sure why this is, but it knocks me out pretty quick. Another time in the middle of the day, I laid on my side on the floor and placed the light so it would shine on my face, and I passed out before 8 minutes were up. Same thing happened in the middle of the day when I put it on my stomach while in a relaxed position. Not quite sure how this works at the moment. One study on Chinese athletes found red light improved their sleep quality. Also, my hair seems to look a lot better lately.
■The Shark Diet - I thought it would be fun to do a 30 day challenge on the channel. The carnivore challenge has been done a ton of times, but since there's a ton of great seafood over here I was thinking why not eat only stuff from the sea for 30 days?
I wouldn't actually recommend this to anyone, for a couple reasons:
1) Cost
2) Mercury. I'll allow Brazil nuts for my experiment as the selenium should bind to mercury.
3) High PUFA. Yes Fish have plenty of good fat, but it's still PUFA that's at high risk for oxidation. I'll allow a vitamin E supplement for this reason.
I'll probably be eating tons of Hokke (Mackerel) for the fat. Actually, I didn't realize these guys were packed with so many nutrients:
