Sacred Symbols+, #419 | On Nintendo vs Palworld, the ZeniMax QA Strike, and a Ubisoft Lawsuit
🕑 Added 2024-11-16 17:00:11 +0000 UTCWelcome back to Sacred Symbols+! Today, I (Colin) am once again joined by Last Stand Media's legal analyst and friend-of-the-show Rick Hoeg, and we've convened today to discuss a trio of interesting topics pertaining to our beloved games industry. For starters, we finally have an update to the pending legal action between Nintendo and Pocketpair, the Japanese developer behind the popular game Palworld. What's going on there, and how are things shaping up for both sides? Next, we take a brief foray into the world of labor strikes, as ZeniMax's 300-strong QA union, first organized just last year, organized a one-day walkout to protest back-to-the-office orders and an increasing reliance on outsourcing. Are we only seeing the beginnings of true labor unrest in the games space? Finally, we end our conversation on a peculiar lawsuit filed earlier this month in California, a potential class action against publisher Ubisoft for taking its 2014 offering The Crew offline, making it totally unplayable. Will we ever settle upon the difference between buying a product outright and merely (though perhaps unknowingly) licensing it, or are we doomed to be stuck in a time loop?

Glad Hoeg is prob the most frequent guest because he brings so much knowledge to the conversation. Colin you are very good at finding the right person for the topic.

I love hearing from Hoeg. Very knowledgeable yet talks in a way us cretans can understand. The two person format works great with him and Colin. I would love an uncut version of this episode though.😂

What’s with the cutoff?
Brian
Hoag must have said some really racist shit for you to cut him off mid sentence with the credits at the end.
Joe
Fellas, what’s with the abrupt cut mid-conversation?
AngelOfCake
Ohhhhh that cut near the end was harsh. Not even even a polite goodbye from Hoeg. :(
Harley K
Definitely hard cuts at the end when Rick is talking like a few others have said. All Dustin's fault!!! Jk lol but at first I thought my phone accidentally skipped somehow to the end.
Adam Martinez
Lol. To be fair it’s a great saying!

Have a drink every time Hoeg says ‘reasonable minds can differ’

Same on my end, just cuts to credits mid conversation

Always enjoy hearing from Hoeg. Was the episode supposed to just end abruptly? It just cuts out for me at 1:25.
Diego Macias
Podcast got cut off early at around 25 minutes mark?

I see Hoeg, I know good times await on the other side of "Play".
