The world as we know it is ruled by a bunch of dark lords, borderline/undead golem makers and churches with barely any light in them. Yet somehow Valdemar is the dangerous one? The two dark lords we met were more like eldritch beings than undead. 😆Its like being told it is not green but red, yet vast majority have color blindness and so it is not true.

1) it's mentioned as early as chapter 3 that Och sends Marianne on missions because she's competent, dependent on him, and yet somewhat expandable. The kind of agent he can trust to do the job, but won't miss if someone happens (just the fact he doesn't tell her what Valdemar truly is when he sends her on the mission should speak volumes on that front). As for nobles' hatred, it's limited to those who knew her Fiancé; she had no problem with Inquisitor Penhew, and Hagith had no idea who she was. Marianne's bad reputation is largely limited to Saklas, from where she's been banned, and nobles that come from here. 2) she wasn't sent to hunt down Shelley in the first place; Och sent her to investigate the Verney and see if anything had eluded the first investigation. Discovering Shelley's activities was a fluke, largely because he stayed hidden in the castle until the Vernburg demiplane manifested. In the previous chapter, Léopold advises her to return home, but she decides to pursue Shelley of her own volition. 3) for the timeline, Marianne was stranded at Vernburg castle between Shelley's escape and the moment the knights sent reinforcements/gave her a mount. Shelley has a head-start because he had multiple days. Additionally, he's a wererat with superhuman speed; even during their confrontation he has Marianne on the backfoot while she uses the blood to enhance her speed and strength. Finally, Marianne is closing the gap with the blood-tracker, as shown by the fact the traces weren't dry yet, so the imperial police state is effective ;) 4) it has been implied multiple times that Shelley has a powerful eldritch patron backing his endeavor; and healing wounds is child's play to any sorcerer. 5) I feel you undersell Marianne. She was pretty competent at gathering information before arriving at Vernburg, and Shelley was the one who ran away from her. She would have killed him had Shelley's patron not intervened/Bertrand not been infected and distracted her. 6) Finally, and most importantly... this is a third-person based narration with two unreliable narrators imprisoned inside their own thoughts, perceptions, and expectations. This is not an omniscient narration. What Marianne thinks and believes is not the objective truth. She can make mistake, assumptions based on incomplete information, and overreact. Without spoiling much, I can already tell that while she is correct Shelley 'bottled up' a wererat plague, she misunderstood what Shelley intends to do with it.

A few things that just don't make sense to me/ rub me wrong: Marianne cannot and shouldn't be sent on this mission unless Lord Och literally cannot spare anyone else: she has a horrible reputation with some authority and nobles, she has pretty weak diplomacy and emotional intelligence, a sword saint that has little practical skills outside of organized dueling it seems (defeated by a were-rat). Also even with a blood tracker apparently a domestic terroristic rat man can outrun trained beetle calvary by a ratio of 3 on foot and basically disabled. Valdemar and lord och's fortress should in no way be in danger to a plague, it all it takes is 1 man and a few plague carriers to destroy a kingdom of trained specialists then it would've happened. And even if the rat aids presents a threat why the fuck would Valdemar be the one sent out to help? What is he going to do, use his non-existent talent with biomancy to cure it? Unless Och wants Valdemar to reach lvl 5 in sorcerer from battle exp no shot any of this should happen
