"Huehuecoyotl licked his fangs" Isn't he just a skeleton? If so he wouldn't have a tongue. Story is very good so far.

My one gripe with this chapter is when Sigrun says "etc." Kind of breaks my immersion since I doubt ancient Aztecs had that kind of grammar. Wouldn't "and so on" feel a bit more natural?

Void Herald

Corrected, thanks.

A real pleasure to find the land of the dead funnier than the one of the living. I'll be waiting for more.

I'm pretty sure Ingrid has her own take on current situation maybe not even aligned with her mother's, and the way you write it, it's pretty obvious that she just took advantage of our inexperienced MC for her own or rather her mother's gain. So there is no question here about it, definitely no love, maybe some infatuation on our MC's side, but it's coming from physical attraction rather than feelings. What I actually appreciate in your writing is a feeling about character, it's easy enough to figure out who's an oppressor, a victim, a puppet or puppeteer... and Ingrid feels like a puppet which tries to be the puppeteer, which is pretty obvious position for her, especially when your whole life has been spent in the place like this and you grow believing that it's the only way - which doesn't really make her 'bad' person in the end, at least that's my take atm :) Because it's well written 'criticism' about harem, that's why it makes a refreshing and quite believable read, in opposition to the usual harem stories... I'm pretty sure no one would enjoy to be just another 'expendable' commodity and live in a constant fear and lets not forget about trading your body for nothing more than just a relative safety. That's also why it's working for me, everyone is doing what is necessary to survive foremost, and if possible try to improve their bleak situation, including our MC. I just like to think that in a long run it might lead to something better for at least some of them... on a cloudy sky before you see the sun in it's full glory you will see sunshine rays from time to time, and I think you've got a good hand with those moments in the story :) Once again, thanks for a great novel.

Thanks! Though I would say this is more of a criticism of how harems 'commodifies' both sides of the fence; Iztac is treated like a stallion whose only goal is to sire the next generation of vampire food; Sigrun is more or less whoring out her daughter if it means securing her family's long-term safety (and would rather perpetuate the cycle of abuse than take the risk of changing it); and then there's the rather horrifying way Necahual is treated as a merchandise. The whole situation is meant to feel rather unsettling, because while they try to make the best out of the situation, everyone inside the palace is cattle meant to breed more blood for the altar. Still, I'm glad you're enjoying so far ;) while this is Iztac's story first and foremost, I intend to develop the four consorts in particular over the story's length. All of them have their goals after all.

Love the story man, the tragedy, struggle, worldbuilding, I even like the harem, a tag which pretty much always makes me drop or not even start the read, often even added to excluded list in my searches... mostly bc of either "catch'em all" or other wish fulfillment themes. Here tho, it feels organic and believable, along with more risky yet still tasteful take with 'adult moments' (not just the usual fade to black) makes a really enjoyable and meaningful read. Oh and characters, the main feature I look foward in stories... a characters driven story, so I'm definitely glad for what we got here, I can feel their motivations and the drive, most of them are not here just to support or antagonize MC, but they also play their own games. Also I can see a glimpses of the best thing I'm looking for in stories - a world where MC is not the only drive, he is just another player a chess piece on the board, and I'd really love to see a bit more on that matter tbh. After all there is nothing better than watching events/interactions with characters who have more depth, so we understand, sympathize with or just hate them. A great work so far, a dark fantasy with a lot of elements I love, just what I was waiting for :)

I recently saw that movie actually, incredible XD

I am getting strong vibes from Coco here and I am absolutely loving it!

I'm actually thinking of releasing an AI art character gallery, to put a face on the various characters ;) happy you're enjoying it :)

Not even death can change human nature ;)

The idea that underworld has its own version of psychics/medium conartists is really amusing

This story reminds me of Underland in the best possible way. One plucky man fighting against forces he can barely comprehend. I think the cast is pretty huge for 10 chapters. It might need a list of dramatis personae in a few more updates. P.S. I love the new cover that popped up a few chapters ago.

Void Herald

Pretty much yes; as Tlacaelel said in the first chapter, they're taking women 'out of circulation' so to say with the expectation that the current emperor will sire children. The Nightlords have a rather... sinister... use for them as part of their rituals and hierarchy. Like Sigrun said, this is a breeding program.

I’ve been thinking about the wives and harem, does the emperor have so many concubines because the wives can’t or won’t get pregnant? One year to procreate and conceive then deliver couldn’t be sustainable with the vamps killing their emperor and his four wives in one year
