Divination descriptions remind me of Lord of the Mysteries

Dune Black

Great chapter ! I would love nothing more than to have a chapter with another POV, like Lahun.

Void Herald

For the sacred numbers, I mostly took those associated with special magical significance in the research I could find; the 20's association with time mentioned by Lahun is indeed because of the 20 days cycle though ;)

Eztli will only be allowed to sire Nightkin if the ritual survives this iteration (as in, if they can safely sacrifice Iztac and thus 'reaffirm' to the ritual that she has become the new Yoloxochitl); they'll probably trust her a bit more after that, but Iztac wouldn't be there to see it ;)

Void Herald

I'm considering putting up a poll for that before the May break (like if you would prefer more B&F chappies before it).

Love the wording of the prophecy. Also really symbology in this chapter I’m really excited to see Iztac use it more!

Considering water was used as a mirror for perceiving truth and seeing into the eyes of skin walkers requires the meeting of two pairs of eyes, I wouldn't be surprised if Iztac carved 2 behind the eyesockets, possibly even mirroring the symbol across each to better impart the truth perception property of mirrors. Would not be surprised either if the first emperor turned out to be a skin walker themselves resulting in their more blight kind of deification. However I'm mildly surprised that the number 0 did not come up here as one of the mesoamerican empires (I think mayan but I don't know how secretive they would have been with it) were the first in the Americas to actually properly conceptualize the number 0 beyond a lack of a number. Also surprised the lack of a mention of their number system being base 20 (Vigesimal). Their abacus (nepohualtzintzin) was impressive for being a 5 digit base 20. Also how it was made of 91 beads (13 by 7), a fourth of 364 days and the number of days they marked seasons as.

I wonder what etzil will need to do to win enough respect for them to at least heart her comments, get strong enough they can't causally end her, wait a few decades until they are sure she learned enough and is with them, or are they not planning of ever truly letting her take her predecessor's place, and leave her a symbolic figure forever. A question I have about vampire children, you said in comments only the nightlords can make vampires, can Etzil do so too now?

I wish that once a month you would write 2 chapters of B&F for a week. I’m no writer and I’m not trying to be a troll, I just love reading your stories and wish that we got more of Iztacs trials.

Got a feeling the last line of the prophecy about a weeping skull is good and bad. An emperor will die, that’s what it’s likely referring to. But it not going to be our main man. The lord of the dead literally warned the MC about eating suns and how the habit sticks, and I reckon that’s going to end with him devouring the first emperor and becoming this lord of terror. Clever bait and switch, likely implying that our Mc will end up either maddened or depraved enough to trap the previous emperors the way they are now. Unless he subverts the prophecy by not becoming a bad guy. But from my estimations of this book, it’s a showing of how someone can start good, and slowly become worse than their demons in the pursuit of slaying them. Some things are worse than death sort of vibe. This could all be wildly off though. Edit: another thought I had is the betrayal could be referring to his mother’s project and her perhaps betraying the Mc’s father in order to grant them both immortality. He do be also a skull.

The Jaguar Woman would definitively have punished Iztac if he hadn't told her what she wanted to hear (namely, he is her obedient tool now and offered to further her interests). Iztacoatl was kinda banking on triggering her with that last comment ;)

Void Herald

Thanks! Well, the key is also that as Lahun said, a prophecy can have more than one 'outcome' that's often up to the individuals decisions of the people involved. It's best to consider them paths and predictions than hard truths ;)

Yuval Roth

My heart stopped for a moment when he talked the the Jaguar woman, she already punished him in the past for speaking his mind and merely making a suggestion, on the other hand, it seems like she craved to enforce control, and was otherwise fine with the talk as long as she is sure he is sufficiently cowed, at least enough to not punish him for merely repeating their suggestions.

Like every single week, seeing Itzacoatl and Iztac duking it out with mindgames, half-truths and schemes brings me joy. Masterfully written, as always. Regarding the prophecy... it's not something I usually enjoy. Like, it's either too obvious and spoils the surprise, or it's so cryptic that you get completely blindsided by them. But knowing you as a writer... well, that certainly makes it interesting! I'll assume that it's a giant smokescreen. As we've established in this chapter, fate is finnicky and some prophecies come to pass in completely unexpected ways. Some of the events will most likely happen as told, just to lend credibility to the rest... only for them to be fulfilled in the most unpredictable ways, or even not coming to pass entirely. All in all, great chapter and wonderful job!

Void Herald

He skipped the senate phase and went straight to emperor though :)

John Hyland

I can't wait for iztac to reveal himself like Palpatine. Definitely getting some sith lord vibes from him lately.

Jonas

Thanks for the great chapter

Void Herald

It yields better results than children bones XD but yeah, it's actually a thing the Aztec practiced, and in Blood & Fur, this is yet another representation of the power of symbolism/lies becoming true.

Carlos Torres

How were you able to predict the future grandmama? WITH CORN!!! 🌽

Void Herald

That's the issue with prophecies; quite the leeway for interpretation and double meanings ;)

Hm, a skull being added to the pile might be the vaguest part. The legion spell allows to anyone being trapped in it. But using it on someone might be the solution to a conundrum thats yet to come up.
