There are different forms of magic depending on the totem, so it varies; things like the Veil can be used by any totem, but the Ride requires being in the underworld so only owl Nahualli or similar can cast it; by contrast, they can't shapeshift like skinchangers. So there are spells everyone can use and others that are exclusive to some creatures ;)

Vampires need to feed on human blood to stay sane; killing them is purely incidental, but it gives them an euphoric rush since they consume the soul too. They thus have to make a conscious effort to stop before killing the target. Drinking animal blood is like eating subpar food for them; it can serve in a pinch, but it's not a good food source.

Loved the chapter really cool new magic- I’m curious can all nahualli use spells like Iztac? Also can witches use similar spells or is their magic different too?

I am kind of curios, we saw vampires eating people, eating animals and drinking both blood and souls, so what do vampires *need* to eat to survive, are they eating humans because they are tastier than animals, does feeding on someone's soul have some qualitive difference over surviving purely on blood? Does regular food or meat does anything for them?

She is acting to help him though, as she did with the ride spell. Yes, her not risking herself to save him does not exactly make her mother of the year, but considering all the help she gives without outright risking herself, she is seriously helping him, and it is worth keeping in mind that what happens to her if she is captured is likely to be far worse than death, if she is lucky, she is enslaved, raped, her children turned into monsters and broodmares, she lose most or all of her power and her life ends either when she can't have children anymore or when the nightlords feel like doing a purge.

The strange thing is that, on the one hand, Itzal, and therefore the reader, wants to better understand his mother and her justification for fleeing. But on the other, the mother's explanation doesn't change. Of course she would free her son if there were no serious consequences for her. Anyone would. But she is Itzal's mother. And what separates a mother from a stranger is the willingness to sacrifice themselves. Itzal's mother has no desire to put her son's life before her own. And I just find it a bit odd that her justification is accepted by Itzal, when that justification is exactly what she's accused of. I'm sorry for any spelling mistakes you find, English is not my first language. In any case, thank you for writing such a beautiful story!
