Fantastic chapter, amazing

CentaureHeart

Daamn. I binged your story in 1 day after having read some of your previous ones. This is definitely the one that elicits the most visceral reaction. Thanks!

Void Herald

Maybe, maybe not; this is a fear conjured from Iztac's own dread so the Nightlords might use different methods ;)

Void Herald

Very good analysis for the Lords of Terror ;) it's a good parallel to Iztac's situation too. So long as he refuses to be controlled, even if restrained, then the Nightlords will never have total dominion over him.

Jay

After rereading this chapter there’s two things I love. First iztacs unbreakable will power and resolve. At this point even if he fails we all know he’ll go down swinging cursing and making hell for the night lords. 2 the lords of terror, the subtlety hint of how the lord of suffering and being manipulated maybe the one who’s truly in control of that relationship is amazing. You would think the one who’s whole theme is control and being in charge would be the decision maker in the relationship but no if one does not want to be controlled they can’t be just amazing.

Diego Urbina

This makes me beg the question, if his magic got sealed would his soul still descend to the Underworld each night? Because if he could I was already assuming he could break free by consuming enough embers.

Void Herald

It might sound super strange, but I feel that the story I'm writing heavily affects my own sentence structure and prose. Like, Blood & Fur really inspires me to go on vivid description and metaphors because of the mythological setting, but I can't repeat the same with Gunsoul because the grounded, gritty action story lends itself more to shorter sentences and matter of fact practical narration; and let's not talk how comedy stories like DW or The Perfect Run inspire me to write silly jokes on the fly. So it's less that I go back and edit and more like that my current mindset heavily affects the chapter. I do heavily edit chapters before the final draft (every chapter is roughly the third or fourth version of my first draft), but it's mostly to change or improve the plotline rather than specific sentences.

Lucius

I did expect it to be some sort of trickery, since the story would have derailed completely. I'm interested to know how many times do you write a sentence, look at it and say " That doesn't sound right", then proceed to backspace and write it over again. Or does this level of prose and poetry come naturally to you now?

Anh Duy Ly

I won't lie, that beginning got to me. I was having trouble getting through it, wondering if this was just misery porn. I'm glad I finished this chapter though, you're a hell of a writer.

Runaway_Cactuar

well, none of those alternatives would be enough to take on 3 Night Lords fully aware. And even if he by some miracle does defeat them, the sheer loss of his inner circle would mean that new named characters would need to be introduced, which would be catastrophic to the pacing.

Doctor Zero

Great chapter, thanks. I was totally fooled, then very relieved. Felt a lot of emotions. Perfection.

Yuval Roth

Not necessarily, he might have been forced to rely more on their father's power, maybe his mother would have done something, maybe the magic block was only partial, it is implied the skin Walker would continue using other skins after all.

Yuval Roth

I thought he was going to attempt destroying his own soul

Fast Lance

I thought it was possible for him to just give his body up to their father to truly stand any chance of getting even

Runaway_Cactuar

I didn't fall for the deception, but only because I was looking at it from a meta perspective. Narratively, the story had nowhere to go if it were true. But still skillfully done 👍

Void Herald

Challenge accepted.

Void Herald

It opens a very deep pit to swallow someone, but I won't say more yet ;)

Jay

Niiiice iztac has the word spell and the other spell from the other house but I’m still kinda confused on what the other one does

Fast Lance

You had me on the edge of my seat, I kept on thinking it's fake and then the tattoo sealed it all for me. Well done, you're gonna struggle to outdo this chapter

Void Herald

Well, in that case I went for metaphorical razors; as in, backstabs and treachery ;)

CJ Tamberella

Thoroughly enjoyed this chapter, the deception was excellently executed. Really had me for a sec

Spartanstoryteller

These two are my favorite lords of terror so far

Diego Villa

I actually thought thought my favorite female character Necahual died for a second. Damn this chapter was an emotional rollercoaster.

Matthew Escobar

I'd guessed that the house of razors would have something to do with the loss of autonomy and being controlled, but more along the lines of having all of iztac's limbs being cut off and being made a puppet with no control. This was so much better than I could have thought

Federico Bellavista

No, it's cool as hell. Seeing Iztac face utter defeat, betrayal, death and suffering... only to emerge unbroken, spitting in the face of his captors all his poison and spite... that was metal as fuck. Usually, in my experience, I dislike all those "it was all a dream/illusion" sequences because they literally add nothing to the character. It's just a circus of despair that has no consequences and gives no real insight in their true psychology. Oh, wow, Iztac is broken by utter defeat. How original... But you switched it up. You've shown something we didn't expect, we didn't know of Iztac - sheer unwillingness to submit. Of course we know how defiant he really is, but we didn't know how he would react in the face of total annihilation. Complete and inescapable defeat. And now we do. Now we know that even if everything goes to hell, even if everyone he loves dies and the world goes to die... He will stand and fight tooth and claw against the dying of the light.

AlthePal

Exquisite! One of the best chapters so far imo. You’ve done a tremendous job with it mate 20/10

Void Herald

I'm happy to read this ;) honestly I feared it would be a make or break it chapter since people aren't usually fond of that kind of fakeout/illusions, but I'm glad it well went well with you!

Void Herald

Thank you for your kind words ;) Well, in order, the Fears have been: - Fear of Death, and Fear of the Unknown/Darkness. - Fear of the World/Nature and Fear of Humans. - Fear of being Hunted/violence, and Fear of Disease. - Fear of Starvation/Famine and Fear of being trapped/claustrophobia. - Fear of being controlled/deceived and Fear of being humiliated/abused.

Stultus

I also cannot wait to see what the Lord of Terror will be. I cannot remember all of them, but we have seen roughly, the fear of: - the world - other humans - sickness - starvation(?) - the dark and what lurks within and now, the fear of being controlled and abused the final Lord of Terror will be the Fear of Death, I think. or pain, as cliche as these may be. I think ultimately nobody wants to really die - even those who believe in a life after death, they dont want to die. Their afterlives after all mean that Death is not the end, and as such it doesnt really count as death. That's just a guess however, I'm looking forward to next week's chapter!

Stultus

Excellent chapter, for real. I will shamefully admit that I was taken in by the deception, and only Iztac pointing outright how the lie fails was enough to awaken me. I will however claim that I was getting suspicious towards the end of the horror segment - how can Iztac come back from this? All his allies dead or betrayed him, Yoloxochitl returned, every Nightlord aware of his deceptions, his magic sealed, every other possible hidden blade of his bound or revealed? There would be no coming back - and then the trick is revealed. I keep coming back to your fictions because they are always unique, interesting worlds, with fascinating characters yes, but it all boils down to the fact that you are just simply an excellent author. A few of your fictions that I initially was quite cool on eventually came to grip me entirely; the Perfect Run was actually one such story that I wasn't really all that keen on early, but eventually came to be my favourite story of yours - up until the release of Blood and Fur, of course. Once again, well done!

Federico Bellavista

Oh, you wonderful, hideous monster! I fucking love you and hate you at the same time... this chapter SWALLOWED me whole and it stands as one of my favourites at all times.

Void Herald

It was a one kind of thing, though the Lords of Terror aren't done messing with Iztac in other ways ;) they don't recycle their schemes.

Nicholas

"The house always wins," or so they say. So it's only natural that the House of Fright twists the rules that it set out in order to win, which in this case meant going from one trial to next almost immediately. Does this mean that Iztac will get to face the final trial before he wakes up?

Cerbero300

I loved. This chapter made me feel many emotions (anger at such betrayal, helplessness over Necahual's death and finally a cold indifference). Oh, harden your heart so that it hurts less. hahaha for a moment I thought I would say to hell with everything, they are coming with me. Keep it up author, I already want the sisters to fall, especially the snake and the jaguar woman, I can't stand the contempt they show for the protagonist. khorne shows his contempt for that woman without honor

undercoverducky

Had me in the first half, ngl 😆

MasterofNova

This chap was a rollercoaster. At the beginning I felt legitimate fear for our boy for the first time in a hot minute, similar to the start of the Meta Run. Honestly at one point during the puppet show I thought this was going to be my favorite chap of the story so far. Then the twist happened. Lowkey wasn't very surprised since like I said, it was fairly reminiscent of the opening chaps of the Meta Run so when it was confirmed the scenario was false the high I was on mostly evaporated. Was impressed by these fear lords tho, quite the interesting duo. Iztac is Iztac tho so his actions and responses are unsurprising. That part is honestly a bit weird to me, his whole thing is effectively about saying fuck you to higher powers, so his actual interactions with them where their not in a position of actual power over him have become almost cliche. With all that said tho, still a strong chap and by far the most potent fear explored in a House of Terror.

GloryHound

Not divisive at all, such a huge PLOT TWIST! You made me believe he was found, I was on edge of my seat, and was like how will the author take the story from here!! I was lowkey angry. B/c my fear was no more emperor working to take down from the inside, would he become a rebel? So when the illusion was lifted I had the same relief as the MC.

Void Herald

Well, after all of what Iztac went through, this is very much something that could happen to him XD

John Hyland

I quite liked this chapters twist. I feel like you're the only author I can trust with these kind of things just because I wouldn't be surprised if everything was actually real lol.

Yuval Roth

Really liked that, him refusing the submit is very thematic, just one more house before he is ready to find Tlaloc.

Void Herald

And Power Word: Sleep, Power Word: Stun, Command and a few other tricks in one package ;)

Carlos Torres

You almost gave me a heart attack. I'll take the spell Power Word: Kill as an apology. Can't wait for the next one.
