Tftc! I've been brainstorming about what title would be cool for Simon at the 100th reign (like Cruel was for Balzam), and I think the winner for me is Simon the Devious. It fits him, and if he could get a hat made of (non-Cassandra) witch skin, it would fit him even better.

He should destroy the paladin crestone and take one of it’s perks

C. Adkins

He’s gained 8 levels so far in less than a year. He started this reign at level 35, now 43. I’d say that’s a pretty good pace

C. Adkins

Yes! Void has a Google doc he attached to one of like the last three chapters

Zahir Nahasamapetial

Do we have a character sheet with Simon's current level and abilities?

Myrdin

I hope Simon gets a vision of the first Paladin, similarly to how he had a vision of the Merchant. His visionary talents are super interesting to me

Zahir Nahasamapetial

Uf, he's starting to do bad things, hope he doesn't lose his mind with all of his reigns

Gunmandude2

I was confused how this run was Simon’s attempt at getting a lot of levels, since he only got a few so far. But after this fight? I’d say all his method acting was worth it.

Chad Champion

Actually best duo in the book :)

Void Herald

Well I've mapped the full Overlord Class and some perk lines have fewer perks/update rather than others. All Seeing only picks up in the second half of leveling and Darkbound only has a few upgrades (though they are game changing).

Myrdin

The overlord is for sure an amalgamation of other noble crestones. The anathemic secrecy definitely belongs to the Rogue as well. That means that the Prince of spiders deliberately changed his aura to that of a demon when meeting Simon in the Whispermire.

Publius Decius Mus

That was my original assumption too, but this doesn't mesh well with what we learnt from Balzam in the meantime. He was not an altruist man to put it mildly.

Sly Bayesian Fox

You know, with all these insane perks, I'm more and more updating towards Balzam killing himself. Perhaps he offed himself early so that the next overlord had time to lvl up and fight the 12

Antony444

It was an underhanded, vile, and treacherous victory, truly. One great triumph for evil, oh my glorious Overlord!

C. Adkins

So once the Muse is released or dead, Simon can get into the War Party’s good graces by giving them the paladin stone right? It would be a tough story to manage, but (like a thought I had in another comment), he could use the Merchant perk to try to “prove” he’s just a merchant looking to side with the winning team (and his favorite sibling). He could say he disappeared because he found out about the conspiracy and the bargain for that info was the merchant class?

C. Adkins

Your talk about the elves knowing about the zodiac parade, maybe they are trying to kill the overlord again to prevent him from helping the demons? Which is ironically exactly what Simon is doing? So maybe justified?

C. Adkins

Although now Simon can just fiendmask as a different class and using the new skill, MAYBE THE MERCHANT (sorry got excited at this thought) which he can prove he has high levels in by using the inventory (which only goes up with merchant class (unless you’re a cheat class like Overlord) AND he gets passive money from his cultists! He’ll be like, “I hired a group to go adventuring after the spymaster gave me this class after I informed her of the conspiracy” ??

C. Adkins

If you are new to Void’s stories, PLEASE also go read his other works. All top tier. The Perfect Run is probably the most liked by the wider community. I’m partial to Vainquerer the Dragon as it is the book that got me into LitRPGs, and I do a yearly reread and it’s still SO GOOD

It might be a way to do good and level up. Deceiving the White Unicorn and using them to defeat his rivals seems like an Overlord thing, and any good wrought from it is toootally just a wacky coincidence. Also, Simon and Alphonse becoming friends would be neat, and I'm sure they'd be a hell of a team if Simon could convince him that he's actually a good guy.

HeartHawk

Presumably because if he destroys it then it will reform and become a problem later? I'm imagining he is waiting until closer to the predicted end of the reign to do that, if at all

Publius Decius Mus

This was dark as hell. But at least this new perk opens up the possibility for Simon to cosplay as himself before he became the Overlord. It might take some explaining, but he can join the White Unicorn now, and see for himself what was the destiny his father robbed him of.

granndfunk

I believe he has two slots available, actually Edit: Vidsich is right, forgot about inventory

João Vene

Does Simon have a devour creststone slot available? What happens if he eats the Paladin? My guess is that he can't even equip it, so he can't devour it

Toknightly

He should devour that Crestone repeatedly to try to balance the overlord one

Colm Ryan

I wonder why his Darkbound & All-Seeing Perks haven't increased at all?

NOOooOOOoOoOO!!!!!!

Leonard’s party was killed in self-defense. Alphonse’s party was killed in self defense. Let’s look at sacrifices. The princess broke into Simon’s home in order to kill him. If he lets her go, she will probably get him killed. Killing her is not evil in my opinion. The first sacrifice was not evil. He definitely deserved to die.

A Reader

I’m just wondering, is Simon actually being evil? Let’s examine.

bob

Why doesn't he take a perk from the crestone

McPiecey

He seemed to be able to use it to hide his level when not using his outfit and to pretend to be a fiend.

Charlie

If Anathemic Secrecy III is an active perk, wouldn't that mean Simon would need to be wearing his class outfit to use it? Or (despite what Laurianne told us) can some active perks be used without the outfit?

McPiecey

Best Story on Royal Road so I had to get early access.

alejandrox

Well... Frea is dead and the paladin too!!!!! A great victory!!!! Take that, Publius!!!! Your lovely elf is dead and she'll probably be a zombie next, hehehehe. He's already level 43!!!! Maybe he'll reach 50 this reign?

Ahmed Hashi

Gregory and Grimm are a delight. I bet you had fun writing them.

Lizy Flore

Now that Tellia, Alphonse and Frea has disappeared in the dark wood, I think it will gather even more attention now. I wouldn’t be surprised if the reign ended because Louis and Laurianne decide to deal with the problem themselves

Armo

Aw, this really is the path to hell. As predicted, it’s inclined, very slippery, and paved with good intentions. Some of my thoughts, disjointed but hopefully legible: The sweetness of the new levels is matched only by the bitterness of murdering almost-friends. I dearly wish for Simon to be able to befriend them, at some point. Both sides need that contact, I think, and it may be one of the few things capable of saving them all from their grim fates. I hope Simon remembers that no matter how low he ends up going in these reigns, even if these worlds persist like branches on a tree, there is always an opportunity to start doing better - especially for him. Even if it doesn’t make up for past deeds, all of it really does matter. Duchar and Hector remain absolute badasses. Same goes for the rest of Simon’s group, really - they successfully stopped a pretty powerful team. I can’t wait to see how terrible this reign ends up being. That talk of the corrupted manatree blossoming is sending shivers down my spine. Speaking of later in this reign, I wonder if we’ll get to find out what actually causes the zodiac fiend parade. I don’t buy it that the Elves are not aware of the comet - they must be. The seals then should not fail without an additional factor, as if they would, the Elves would probably focus their efforts on bolstering them before fighting the overlord. My guess is that whatever Louis does that the Oracle predicts buffs the fiends together with the comet and causes the full-on archfiend battle royale to break out.

Lizy Flore

Mon cœur bat à la chamade. J’a-dore!

Myrdin

Nice. New crestones to study for schematics, new spells to learn, new equipment to create. However, how is Simon going to explain his holy aura when he reverses his dark aura? Can they only sense the darkness and not the holiness? I hope that the Muse comes through with the rewards, because that reign may mess Simon up a lot. The War Party thought that Satine was there to ally with them, so they are certainly going to investigate her disappearance. The paladin crestone may be used to prove that deceit and also as a bargain.

CentaureHeart

That's a good point! It also depends on how the oracle predicts the future. Is it like a day to day? Or is it great events? He probably influenced some of it but a lot is still unchanged.

Logrus

So, every time Simon dies, is the Oracle experiencing a massive amount of whiplash? In theory, the entire world is exactly the same starting at the moment of the previous Overlord's death, so that means the futures the Oracle sees have been consistent... Meaning Simon going back does NOT retroactively change the Oracles previous predictions. Meaning that Simon's intentions for that life are the only actual variable changing what the Oracle Sees from that moment on. I wonder if he could manipulate that, or if it is already having an effect on how everything plays out life to life.

George R

Great chapter

Federico Bellavista

Fuck YEAH! Frea deserved it. Since we've met the bloody elf, I've only wanted her torn to shreds.

Walker Hayse

also I'm sure the Oracle is pissed as heck and the elves might do something crazy now.

Walker Hayse

dang, this was an intense chapter. This kind of victory feels like it sets up this reign for a long time, but I'm sure more chaos and difficulties always arise.

CentaureHeart

Great chapter! Great reign level wise. It is terrible what he has to do. The choices he has are rather poor though. Level up like he does right now, gaining levels (which seem to be incredibly addictive) by murdering, defiling, betraying. Or I guess he can be his good nature self and be imprisoned or killed. Feels bad, I hope he doesn't end up corrupted. You should have him go speak to a therapist Void.

Void Herald

I mean, there'll still be. Alphonse is in possession of the Crestone at the start of the reigns, and the Overlords have learned to their trouble that all attempts to contain the Paladin eventually fail ;)

Elerahz

Simon stealing the crestone for good is actually great for him the paladin just gets stronger to fast. I also see how the overlord class might make someone evil between the euphoria from levels and 80 more just this reigns simon will probably have lower standards morally

Raymond

So in the next reign there will be no paladin?
