I can't help but think this all has something to do with the Maiden. They're the only zodiac I can see standing out enough to be relevant to Simon's affinity with the light. We heard (from the minotaur?) that the Maiden wanted to be worshiped - perhaps it has interleaved itself with the Light manalith somehow? And then perhaps the Cobweb is working with it.

So. I don't think it is damaging for Simon to CONSIDER betraying the spider; they probably assume that everybody is looking to do that, so it's not really an admission. But the question is: how do you trust the sisters to actually WANT that outcome? Unless they accept his brands, there's simply no way they can be trusted. I'm still thinking they are the Rogue Prince, and they want something from Simon.
