The Hundred Reigns 30: Lord of the Berwick Islands (8)

Simon could see the fires from leagues away.
The largest port on the Berwick Islands’ northwest was the city of Balmos, home to over fifty thousand inhabitants according to the latest imperial census. While most of Lord Magnos’ war navy docked in Carcas, Balmos still hosted quite a few galleys meant to intercept whoever dared to attack the island. Conquering it would be a priority for any invasion force.
Louis’ airship fleet didn’t bother to seize it. It simply followed the true-and-tried procedure used by the Imperial Air Force against enemy states: aerial bombardments from mages casting fireball after fireball from their airships’ decks.
Simon had watched the horrific scene from atop a hill in the distance, his fiancée covering her mouth in horror at the fiery spectacle. The airships had set the city ablaze in a vicious onslaught until the flames and plumes of smoke reached all the way to the clouds, then continued their course eastward on their way to Carcas. No doubt they would visit the same treatment upon all fortresses they found in preparation for an amphibious landing.
Airships flew too high for most siege engines to reach, but House Paimon’s troops included entire squads of griffin riders among their number and Lord Maublanc was a terrific strategist. The Berwick Islands should be able to mount a successful counteroffensive once they mobilized, yet losses would continue to mount in the meantime.
Did Lauriane authorize this raid? Simon couldn’t believe it. His sister wouldn’t stand for this brutal annihilation, especially if it risked harming him or Anna. Did Louis sideline her or keep her in the dark? If only I could talk to her…
Simon couldn’t help but recall his discussion with Louis in an earlier reign, when he compared the people of the capital to vermin and complained about overpopulation. Was this his solution? There was no way Louis could have built a fleet this size in only two months, so he must have been building up his forces in secret long before their father’s death…
Simon glanced at his fiancée, who stared at the burning city in the distance with a hollow gaze and forlorn expression. She visibly struggled to hold back tears at the sight of her homeland ablaze.
“These are our people,” Anna lamented. “Our subjects, yet Louis would turn his weapons against them all the same. I didn’t… I couldn’t imagine…”
Simon took a deep breath. “Anna–”
“He will pay for this.” Anna ground her teeth so hard that Simon could hear them creak. “I swear to you, Simon. Louis will pay for this barbarous act.”
“He will,” Simon reassured her. “We will rally the Islands’ forces and storm the mainland the same way our fathers did.”
It was more of a wish than a promise at this point, but Anna was right. Such senseless destruction couldn’t go unpunished. The mere fact that Louis could even conceive of bombing their own population made Simon worry about what would become of Endymion should he take control of it.
“Anna, Simon, we need to go before they spot us,” Tiella called out to them.
“A last-minute escape through the woods wasn’t my idea of a honeymoon, but you were right about one thing, Simon,” Anna said as they rejoined their escort. She was trying to lighten up the mood a bit, but Simon could tell from her scowl that she was only putting on a brave face to deal with the situation. “My life will never be boring with you in it.”
Simon wished that it could have been a good thing.
“These last few months were the best of my life,” he admitted. “I thought I would need to abandon the Magnos name to finally taste happiness, but I was wrong.” He shook his head in shame and guilt. “I just wish those days of peace could have lasted longer.”
Anna’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “You couldn’t have done anything.”
She meant well, but she was wrong. Simon could have been more prudent and avoided giving himself away. He could have married her without bringing war to her doorstep. Simon had the perfect life within his grasp, and he let it all slip through his fingers because of his misplaced greed.
This reign had gone off the rails, and he still had so many of them ahead of him…
No, I shouldn’t think this way, Simon told himself as they rode into the woods towards the safehouse. This is only the start of a long battle. I’ll have to live with my mistakes, but I can still make the best out of this situation. I have Anna, Tiella, and a social status I could only dream of once… I can’t throw all the good things away with the bad. I can’t go back and lose everything.
So long as Simon had Anna by his side, he could do anything. He refused to lose the time he had spent with her.
The marshes and woods ahead were thick with thorny bushes, a dense canopy that partially obscured the stars, and faint mist hanging in the air. Owls chirped and wolves howled to the moon as the wind blew the smell of distant smoke through the whistling leaves.
Perhaps it was the fear of discovery or the tension in the air playing with his mind, but Simon began to feel watched. He could see that his allies also shared his sense of unease as their horses slowed down upon entering a wide clearing, before finally stopping.
“What’s going on?” Simon inquired.
The horses remained eerily quiet.
Simon’s Perks compelled animals to see him as a figure of authority and allowed him to talk to them. His words should have at least elicited a response, yet their mounts simply stared into the woods.
Anna immediately put on her Class outfit. “They’ve been charmed.”
Immediately realizing the danger, Simon subtly cast his Fiendmask spell and put on a fake Dreadnought outfit to hide the Overlord armor. Tiella and their escort also changed, with the latter being a balanced crew of plate-wearing Knights and spear-wielding Soldiers. Both were mass-produced Vassal Classes that lacked extraordinary abilities, but could hold their own in a fight.
Everyone unhorsed and formed a defensive circle as the forest literally shifted around them. Branches and trunks subtly moved to reveal shadows surrounding the group from all sides. Most of them were humans wearing owl masks and feather cloaks, each of them armed with bows, sarbacanes, or axes; likely disguised hunters and foresters from nearby settlements.
But the ambushers included other tribes among them. Tiny fairies hardly taller than Simon’s own finger darted around on wildly colored butterfly wings; a pair of dire tigers, each the size of a horse, growled at Simon’s group; and he even caught a glimpse of an elven woman bearing a bow of white wood pointed straight at him.
Their leader arose from the ground like a woman rising from water.
She was a creature of great beauty, tall, with skin the color of bark and green leaves for hair. She resembled an elf, albeit with moss for a dress and eyes pale like milk. She looked young, fit, and fertile, like the forest she ruled over and the young manatree whom she embodied.
A dryad had come to greet them.
This is bad, Simon thought as he immediately attempted to parlay. “The Green Mother, I presume?”
He had heard dryads could speak and understand the tongues of all living things. That one answered him in common Endymian with a voice akin to rustling leaves in the wind.
“You would know of my name, you fiend who has helped the white priests burn so many of my children.” The dryad’s fair face twisted into an expression of absolute hatred and disgust. “You reek of the Dark. It pours out of your soul like magma out of a volcano and burns hotter than your metal birds’ flames. Your every step befouls this land, demon.”
“I am no fiend, nor your foe,” Simon replied in a desperate attempt to de-escalate the situation. “Let us through, and we may part in peace.”
“There can be no peace with the Overlord, only death or slavery.”
For a very brief moment, Simon hoped she only spoke in metaphor, and that she simply referred to the Overlord as the figurative embodiment of the empire… until he saw the glare she sent him; the pure and naked hatred she felt not only for him as a person, but all that he represented.
She knew.
“How?” Simon asked, his men exchanging glances. He guessed that Lord Maublanc had likely briefed them on his true identity, since they were to escort him to a safe place.
The Green Mother sneered with disdain. “Humans see this place as an island cut away from everything, but my people’s roots connect all across the world. My sisters from Illusea have told me of the vile Balzam’s death, and that you deceived your own kin to slither your way into my forest, Simon of Endymion.”
How could they—did the elves have spies among Euphemia or Louis’ inner circles? That didn’t matter right now. Simon could tell she wouldn’t let them escape the woods without a fight.
Her manatree is very young and we’re far from it, so she shouldn’t be able to use her most dangerous abilities or call powerful monsters to help her, Simon thought while recalling the bestiaries he had read. Killing her will only be a temporary measure so long as her tree stands, but she should be down for at least a few days.
Nonetheless, the very forest around them answered her commands. Fighting her meant fighting the land, the air, the wind, the trees, unless…
Unless he wrestled control of it all.
“Leave this incarnation of evil to us, so that his foulness may be sealed away beneath the earth,” the dryad told Simon’s allies. “The rest of you may depart my forest with your lives.”
“This is pointless,” Anna argued, her finger pointing in Balmos’ direction, “invaders are bombarding our home as we speak! Our forests will burn, and our people will suffer unless we repel them!”
“Your cities will indeed burn, Lady of House Paimon, as they have many times in the past… but these lands and forests are vast, and my children have many places to hide. They have survived far worse than your metal birds. The Overlord, however, is a threat to all life in this world and cannot be allowed to flee.” Wind blew through the Green Mother’s hair of leaves, and her courtiers readied their bows. “I will ask you again for the last time. Leave this wicked demon to us and go on to defend your cities, or perish.”
Anna glanced at Simon. She looked deeply, deeply unhappy about how all of this turned out… and maybe a little excited.
“You are lucky that you’re good in the sack, Simon,” Anna said, a rapier manifesting in her hand. “I cannot be widowed before I’m even married.”
Simon triggered his ultimate weapon right as the archers fired their arrows. A rain of them fell upon the group, with their escort and Tiella raising a wall of shields to intercept them.
“Land of Darkness!” Simon shouted upon dropping his disguise. “Dreadful Aura!”
Miasma poured out of his hand, and the forest screamed.
His Dreadful Aura inspired fear in all weaklings that witnessed him, and terror proved stronger than magical compulsion. The horses were the first to run away, alongside most cultists and nearby animals—when they didn’t merely freeze in place. Many of his allies would have suffered the same fate if not for a certain helper.
Anna Paimon’s Leadership III boosted your stats and shielded your allies from Terror!
They were truly a match made in the Light.
The elf archer didn’t run, and neither did the fairies nor the tigers. The latter two leaped and pounced at the group, with Tiella swiftly intercepting one with her shield and two Knights engaging the other in a clash of swords and claws. The elf archer moved in front of the Green Mother to shield her and fired an arrow that nailed a soldier in the eye, but it was the fairies that proved most troublesome. Magic swirled from their hands and materialized into enormous boulders they flung in the middle of the soldiers’ formation, crushing one and forcing the rest to disperse. The sight of tiny fairies materializing and firing such projectiles from nothing was quite the absurd sight, and proof that magic was the great equalizer.
Simon himself charged straight for the Green Mother. A black miasma crystal appeared in his hand and darkness poured out of it, causing the dryad’s face to strain in pain and disgust. Shadows lengthened across the woods as his power grew.
Lord of the Demon Castle boosted your stats!
His ability could transform any natural or artificial landmark into a Dungeon; true to his guess, that included the forest they were in.
Nonetheless, Simon could tell the Green Mother’s influence clashed with his own like two colors refusing to mix. She waved her hands and caused a wall of thorns to erupt from the ground to separate her archer friend and herself from the rest of the melee.
I have a chance so long as I keep the buffs up, Simon thought as he lunged forward, using his Elemental Saber spell to cloak his sword in fire. I can’t let her recover from the shock.
Empowered by Anna’s buffs and his own, Simon lunged faster than the wind and cut through the entire wall of thorns in a single blazing swing. His victory was short-lived as a colossal mass of roots and fungi sprang from the ground in front of him. A towering monster with great vine tentacles each the length of adult pines and a toothy flower-maw for a face erupted from the ground. It carried the elf archer and the Green Mother on its back.
The monster’s grasping tendrils immediately lunged at Simon, who narrowly dodged by rolling to the side. The archer immediately used the opportunity to nail him in the shoulder with an arrow. It should have bounced off his armor, but somehow managed to puncture it and reach all the way to his flesh.
Supereffective damage!
Gritting his teeth, Simon powered through the pain and ran around the giant plant monster in an attempt to avoid being squashed. The Green Mother was incanting something from atop her warbeast, and the sound of booming thunder answered her.
Realizing the danger, one of Simon’s Soldiers threw his spear at the dryad like a javelin in an attempt to impale her. The elven archer fearlessly jumped in the projectile’s way and took the hit for her mistress, the weapon impaling her through the neckline and goring its way out of her back. Her blood sprayed the plant monster’s back and the dryad alike as she collapsed dead at her mistress’ feet.
“Leila!” the Green Mother called out in fury. Lightning immediately fell from the sky and struck the Soldier who had slain her courtier, killing him.
Yet the corpse did not fall.
The Class outfit dissipated, but the remains of the Soldier rushed at the plant monster in spite of the burning, lethal wounds it had taken. The corpse lunged forward with little to no regard for its safety, scratching and biting it in spite of the task’s futility.
He wasn’t the only one. The Green Mother gasped in horror when her own archer rose from the dead, the spear that killed her still stuck in her corpse, and lunged at her former mistress in an attempt to tear out her throat with her bare teeth. A dead tiger, slain cultists, and other animal carcasses began to swarm the plant monster from all sides.
Duchar was right to wonder about whether or not a Dungeon could raise both old corpses and freshly made ones. As it turned out, every cadaver within range would answer its call to arms.
Weak zombies were no match for the plant creature and it swiftly crushed them by the dozens, but the distraction allowed Simon to climb on its back. He soon found himself facing the Green Mother after she forced her former elf ally off the creature.
“You foul fiend…” the Green Mother hissed at Simon, her nails turning into sharp branch-spears. Thunder echoed above them, closer, louder. “You dare enslave the dead?!”
“Do you feel the Dark now?” Simon taunted the dryad as he raised his sword for the kill. “Do you feel my power creeping on your bark? Does it fill your sap with fear?”
“We have slain your vile father,” the Green Mother replied coldly. “We shall slay you too, heir of Mardok.”
What did she just say? No, it had to be a bluff. He couldn’t let her unbalance him.
“Bring me her head, Simon!” Anna commanded from below as she skewered the last living tiger with a flurry of rapier thrusts too quick for the eye to follow; likely some Lord active Perk. “And I will let you take me all night!”
Anna Paimon’s Inspiring Command granted you a guaranteed critical hit!
Not quite the most verbose battle cry, but it invigorated Simon nonetheless.
The Green Mother tried to slice Simon’s head off with a feral strike, but she lacked a warrior's finesse. Anticipating the blow, Simon swiftly dodged it and retaliated with a mighty swing. Such a blow would have cut a man in half, yet it only reached halfway into the Green Mother’s chest. Her body felt closer to stone than bark when it came to resistance. The fiery effect of the Elemental Saber barely inflicted any damage.
Simon's sword briefly became stuck, which allowed the Green Mother to strike him like a viper. Her branch-nails struck his chest deep enough to draw blood and narrowly missed his heart.
Thankfully, that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Green Mother shrieked as Simon’s poisonous blood ate through her bark and softened it, allowing Simon to pull back his blade and strike her again like a lumberjack. His blow nearly carved her in two from the waist down, and the third strike was guaranteed to be fatal.
“This vessel is but a shell,” the Green Mother warned with eerie nonchalance. “I shall return.”
She was right, but it didn’t stop Simon from bisecting her in a single swing.
The rush that followed—both the first level-ups he had had in a month and the most intense one yet—was perhaps the greatest thrill in his life, second to his first night with Anna.
Level 21 Overlord Perk: Warmonger III (Passive): You instinctually understand how to ride any creature and cannot be dismounted by force.
Level 22 Overlord Perk: Dreadful Aura II (Active): Your followers are terrified of disappointing you. Allies within range of your Dreadful Aura receive a stat bonus when following your commands or fighting on your behalf; this effect is heightened for those bearing one of your Devil Brands.
Level 23 Overlord Perk: Devil Forgemaster I (Passive): You can craft enchanted Accessories, such as rings or brooches, but you must use miasma in their creation.
Three new levels at once!
Simon read his new Perks, and that proved a deadly distraction. A mighty tendril grabbed him by surprise and then smashed him against the forest floor.
“Simon!” he heard Anna shout, followed by the roar of the monstrous plant.
Simon thought slaying the Green Mother would cause her creature to go inert, but the sight of the monster opening its gaping maw at him dashed that hope. The thunder didn’t abate either, and continued to grow louder and–
Wait.
Not thunder.
Simon looked up to the night sky, horror seizing his heart when he saw airships flying above the forest and indiscriminately raining down fire until a wall of flames engulfed the forest’s edge. He couldn’t tell if this was an intentional attempt to smoke them out or an indiscriminate campaign of destruction, and it wouldn’t matter either way. The bombardments would reach them in minutes.
“Run!” Simon shouted at Anna, Tiella, and the handful of surviving Knights. Only a single fairy bombarding them with spells and the plant monster remained. He rammed his blazing sword into the creature’s tentacle, and though it hurt it, the abomination still refused to loosen its grasp. “Run away!”
“Not without you!” Anna shouted back,
“Run!” Simon insisted, even as the plant monster attempted to swallow him whole. Simon barely managed to hang on to its teeth with a well-placed Shadowchain spell, resisting its pull. All he could see now was a gullet, but it didn’t stop him from shouting more warnings. “Run!”
He had no idea whether Anna heard or followed his order. All he could hear in response was the sound of thunder, followed by waves of searing heat.
His family’s war machines rained down fire upon them all, finishing off what the forest could not.

She was introduced that way and there are other female characters not like her. If it was every female character I would agree, but it’s kinda unique to her in the story.

I'm apparently the only one bothered with Anna's almost nymphomanic dialogue and character. Half of the time she talks about sex or has sex, which, honestly, is a bit alienating. But maybe there are indeed women who talk and act like a male wish-come-true.

And so it ends in a rain of fire...I suppose that whoever was in command of that fleet wanted the Overlord very, very dead. Ironically, this level of overkill wasn't necessary at all...but I suppose it was critical in terms of time, since the civil war began. Overall, despite the huge mistake at the beginning (the will) Simon got his longest and most productive reign here. Yep, just checked, and he was Level 15 when it began (Level 15 and a half, since he had gained experience against Eole), he finished at Level 23. Sure, he got lucky with the Lich, but everyone needs luck against that old monster. He learned to rule, and he knows Anna can be trusted, among several other persons of his retinue. Obviously, it's still going to be a long and hard road, but if Simon can get the exp-boosting perk, he may soon reach the Level 36-37 Anna is at the beginning of the reigns, and then 'normal' enemies won't be a problem anymore. He will also be able to put up a fight against anyone not a monster in terms of strength. Oh, and this reign allows him the possibility of giving out false starts, so this will increase the possibilities in term of secrecy. One truth remains, though: the big culprit behind this failure is Casval Ashamodai. Casval ruins everything, even in death. Therefore, I believe Casval must be destroyed.

This chapter REALLY makes me excited for the Church arc. Simon having the “third eye” like the empress, Thalas becoming decent (after a LONG time, maybe Simon saves his mother? Idk, voids got it though). And just beating the shit out of Louis. Like damn, he pissed me off this arc. I was hoping the War party would be like, better siblings to Simon but obviously not a great choice because they love war, but this really shows they are scum on top of it. Cool extra fleet though. Points for the drip

I don't think any of the siblings in an opportunist. Louis is clearly a zealot, a madman with grandiose dreams about transforming the world. I do not doubt for a second that he has deep ideological convictions driving him forwards, that's why he will commit mass murder without flinching. Thalas does not seem to care for power that much, he is mostly just searching for something to fill the void that was left in his soul by the lack of love and approval from his dad. Lauriane and Dassein seem decent people who take the defense of the realm seriously, and seem to be very loyal to their older brother. As for Thalas's sister (forgot her name), we haven't seen her so far. All in all, I believe Lauriane truly loves Simon as a brother, but it was never a question that she loves Louis more, and when she has to choose, she will pick the trueborn brother.

I kind of hoped we will get to see a brilliant campaign conducted by that sly old wolf, Lord Paimon, which would catch Louis on the backfoot despite the disparity in forces. Alas, that is not to be. Let's hope his next reign will be a longer one, I long with Simon to see far countries, not tainted by this ugly family struggle. It will be better to read about the civil war in the newspapers than being in the heart of it. EDIT: Also, good Lord, already chapter 30. You are a beast.
