True to Silk’s warning, it didn’t take long for news of the imperial civil war to reach Valne’s shores.
Reports of the explosion that shook Castle Frightwall arrived two days after her visit, detailing how a rain of light descended from the heavens and blasted the Overlord’s wicked castle to pieces, only for it to rise again from the rubble. Some attributed it to the wrath of the gods smiting the wicked Overlord, others to a Church or War Party secret weapon.
Whatever the case, Simon was certain it wasn’t a bomb. The fact that it only happened in this particular reign, after he removed Belzemine from court and Patriate had avoided assassination, implied those two had something to do with it somehow.
“A rain of light…” Belzemine whispered when he gave her the day’s newspaper. “There are spells like Heavenly Judgment that behave similarly… but to raze Castle Frightwall, even for a time, it would need to be… Tier X, the highest tier of magic. Only the Oracle or multiple archmages working together would be capable of casting that, Your Majesty.”
Simon knew it. The whole deal with Patriate had something to do with the elves. “Why not use such a powerful spell earlier if they had it all along?”
“A spell so powerful… would have taken very long to refine and required guidance…” Belzemine coughed. Though her health had improved since they started feeding her monster lifeforce, it remained insufficient for a full recovery. “Either someone cast it from inside the castle, or with a… with a guiding sigil of some sort. An anchor.”
Simon pondered her explanations. Could the elves have somehow exploited the lack of Overlord in Castle Frightwall to set up such a guiding rune inside its walls? This seemed the likeliest explanation, and would confirm that they had someone on the inside. Could Patriate Malphas have been in league with them?
That particular mystery was unfortunately likely to end up with a dead end this reign. Lady Shabram, Patriate Malphas, and quite a few generals were reported missing and presumed dead in the explosion. Empress Euphemia, who had been in the castle during the attack, managed to survive it by the skin of her teeth and accused Louis of attempting to murder her. It didn’t help that the Marshal of the Empire had been coincidentally on a trip to Magvolia when this happened. In Simon’s opinion, it looked more and more like a frame job, or at least an attempt to stoke the fires of civil war.
And it worked.
News continued to drizzle in in the following days, starting with the awful destruction of Amnadiel in an airship raid, followed by strategic bombardments on Louis’ enemies that killed thousands in what would become the civil war’s opening volley. High Confessor Mastemo reacted by declaring a holy war in Euphemia’s name, with the Queendom of Cocagne swiftly announcing its support for the empress by sending squads of mages into Louis’ fiefdom of Magvolia.
News said that Lord Paimon had recalled his daughter Anna home to the Berwick Islands and declared his neutrality in the conflict. This time, the two parties left him alone since he wasn’t secretly sheltering the Overlord in his halls.
Another surprise followed a week later, when reports of a certain dragon warlord leading a rebellion in Telluria reached Valne. Simon wasn’t sure if letting Casval run free or Castle Frightwall’s destruction had somehow emboldened Vouivre, but she openly announced herself, began to besiege Beleth, and called upon all Gargauth loyalists to join her in reestablishing the ‘natural order.’
“The War of the Triad?” Simon scoffed upon reading the day’s newspaper with Eole. Nearly two weeks had passed since the attack on Frightwall, and the troubles in Endymion were on everyone’s tongue. “What a ridiculous name.”
“Everyone is talking about it at the Monoceros Guild,” Eole replied. She had grown to quickly master the Valnean tongue, likely thanks to her Songstress Perks. “Half of them want to intervene to retake Magvolia, and the rest want to wait for the imperial parties to bleed each other out. The first war refugees are flowing in, too.”
“I know. City officials visited me to rent out some rooms for newcomers.” It was easy money, though not the kind Simon was all too proud to profit from. At least they’ll be safer with us in charge. Argas would have no doubt enslaved most of them.
The next article detailed how Euphemia’s forces had apparently destroyed ten of Louis’ airships in a battle over the Navarre region by calling upon bound Eidolons to fight them in the air.
Norbelle has the Summoner Noble Class, Simon recalled. It allowed its user to call on creatures to her help, and she had inherited her mother’s Visionary third eye on top of it. Is that the Church Party’s trump card? Enslaved false gods?
So far, the War Party controlled most of the western and northern parts of the empire, the Church Party dominated the south and heartland, and Vouivre was exploiting the chaos to make headways into Telluria even without a demon crystal. Some speculated that Scalland’s scalefolk-heavy population might even declare for her in the near future.
The civil war had barely started, and yet not a day passed without news of some village being bombarded or a fiefdom being sacked for proclaiming allegiance to the wrong group.
“Could I have stopped this?” Simon muttered to himself. So many lives had been lost because of his family’s savage struggle for power. “If I had chosen otherwise, would all these people still be alive?”
“You couldn’t have changed anything,” Eole comforted him. “You said so yourself when we first met.”
“I’m not so sure.” Leaving Agnes at the castle and going to the Berwick Islands had at least delayed the chaos by months until Dassein finally uncovered his identity. “If I had stayed–”
“Your siblings and stepmother would have still fought each other,” Eole replied bluntly. “When you gather vipers in a den, it is not a question of if they’ll bite, but when. You are not responsible for your family’s actions.”
It didn’t feel that way to Simon. Reading the news about the massacres was one thing, but Simon had seen an airship bombardment with his own eyes, and perished in it. He had seen the flames of imperial war machines engulfing the Berwick Islands. The mere thought that such destruction was now happening all across his homeland deeply depressed him.
He had to find a way to nip this civil war in the bud in a future reign. Too many lives were at stake.
Eole studied his expression for a moment before squeezing his hand.
“You have received an evil power and chosen to use it for the good of others, Simon, when your family chose violence on their own,” she said, her delicate fingers warm to the touch. “Many people here owe their freedom to you, and we are set to help many more. In the end, this will make more of a difference in the world than becoming another warlord.”
Simon wasn’t so sure, but her kindness and earnestness warmed his heart. “Thank you, Eole. I appreciate it.”
She gave him one of the loveliest smiles he had ever seen; the kind that could have probably compelled men to duel for her favor on the spot.
She didn’t let go of his hand either.
It felt nice, very nice… until Simon recalled Anna, at which point a wave of guilt overwhelmed him. He pulled back his hand and avoided her gaze.
Eole looked deeply, deeply disappointed for a moment, but she quickly guessed his reason. “You already have someone.”
“I did.” Was the Anna of this timeline the same as the one he had promised to marry? Did he still owe her his faithfulness, even though she was half a world away and unlikely to meet him again? He had never given thoughts to such matters, but the memory of his last reign was too fresh on his mind. “I’m… sorry, Eole, but I’m not ready for romance. It’s too soon.”
“I understand. It was presumptuous of me.” Eole seemed to understand, and didn’t offer any reproach. She simply accepted his choice and moved on. “I would still like to take you and Belzemine to my people’s sanctuary one day. I think you would both like it there. I have so many friends to introduce you to.”
“Perhaps after we find some more manaliths,” Simon replied. Still, he was looking forward to it. “Any luck on that front?”
Eole’s good mood quickly deflated. “The price rises each time I look at them. I’ve heard the army has put restrictions on sales to keep a supply should the war come to Rosanne.”
Simon had feared as much. “I have a plan to make us more money. If it doesn’t work… I might have to knock on the Cobweb’s door.” Eole immediately scowled at the idea, but Simon insisted. “I don’t like them either, but they’re already using the Copper Dragon to smuggle drugs. They could help us obtain manaliths.”
“I am against dealing with them, but… if you think we have no other way, I will trust your judgment. I will keep looking for good quests at the guild in the meantime.” Eole rested her head on her hand. “What plan do you have in mind?”
“A new business.” Simon chuckled. “A jewelry business.”

One of the few rules of war was that it always drove up demand for useful magical items. Everyone wanted to feel safe from conflict, even when it happened an ocean away.
As it turned out, there was a rather lucrative market in Rosanne and Valne for enchanted accessories. Rich people loved to both flaunt their wealth and feel safe; and a beautifully crafted brooch shielding them from poison or fire achieved both aims. Crafting Class users were so rare and valued that most ended up in a guild or under government contract that carefully regulated their activities, so many were willing to pay top money for private, off-the-book commissions.
Unfortunately, the use of miasma in their creation—which Simon’s Class required—would have immediately brought too much unwanted attention. The Septic family’s contacts among Rosanne’s merchants helped him fence a few, but Argas’ death cost them a few connections; something he had chastised Leticia for. As much as he looked down on the man, he couldn’t have employees putting hits out on each other.
All in all, Simon wasn’t making much progress until a certain woman showed up at his office unannounced.
“You are wasting your time and talents with the local bourgeoisie, Simon,” Silk said, playing with a Ring of Cursed Flame he recalled selling not even two days before. “Custom orders and collectors pay best.”
Simon glared at her. Considering the ease with which she kept infiltrating his office, she had to have a roguish Vassal Class of some kind. “I don’t want your organization’s help.”
“No, but you need it. Besides the lack of profit, you’ll bring the city watch to your door if you keep bumbling your way into our world. You’ve already attracted some attention you could have done without.” Silk smiled at him with the ironclad confidence of someone convinced they had already won. “Your craftsmanship impressed the Prince. He offers you a fifty-fifty share after reasonable expenses, to be paid either in gold or manaliths for your friend’s recovery.”
“Are you—are you spying on me?” Simon scoffed. “Stupid question, of course you are.”
“Please. We spy on everyone.” Silk flipped the ring in the air. “What kind of items can you make?”
“Shouldn’t you already know?” Simon mused. “Or are there cracks in your omniscience?”
“Even we cannot pierce through Your Majesty’s Anathemic Secrecy, which vexes us,” Silk admitted. “But if you try to cheat us, we will know it soon enough.”
Good to know. Simon weighed the pros and cons of revealing something so sensitive to a criminal organization before realizing they would likely figure it out anyway from his deliveries. “Any accessory, so long as I use miasma in its creation.”
“So you can create cursed items?” Silk’s smile turned almost predatory. “Excellent.”
“Do you actually want to buy harmful items?”
“You would be surprised how many people would pay for items capable of discreetly sabotaging their rivals, and how few people can actually make those.” Silk met his gaze. “We will forward you lucrative orders. This would be a purely transactional arrangement, with no hidden strings nor other mutual obligations. In, or out?”
Simon considered the proposal. It looked fair on the surface, though he was pretty sure they would fleece him on the fifty-fifty percent share—since he had no way to actually check how much the Cobweb would sell the products for—and it was clear they would use cursed items for harmful purposes.
Nonetheless… nonetheless, Belzemine’s health required it, and Silk was right. He was getting nowhere with his current arrangements.
“I have two conditions,” Simon said. “First, if I say no to a particular order, then it’s no. The end.”
“Fair enough. And the other condition?”
“Neither I nor Eole, nor any of my employees, can be connected to this in any way.”
“Who do you take us for? You’ll stay clean.” She offered him her hand. “A deal then?”
Simon reluctantly shook it and concluded his second demonic deal. It didn’t please Eole when he informed her of it, but true to her word, she trusted his decision and promised she would continue to support him should he need anything.
Afterwards, Simon started receiving very specific custom orders from Cobweb courtiers regularly visiting him. A few commissions were relatively simple enough to complete, like variants of his Ring of Cursed Flames protecting the user against certain types of elemental damage; other orders were more complex and impossible for him to fulfill, like necklaces capable of directly killing their wearers. Simon was wary of exposing the true limits of his crafting and spellcasting to someone like the Prince of Spiders, so he refused those orders without providing an explanation. Most were simple enough for him to fulfill anyway.
Though Belzemine was confined to her bed, she could still offer Simon pointers on spellcasting. It didn’t take him long to master the Blindness curse and incorporate it into some accessories, and then she began to teach him the Toxin spell to poison targets.
“His Majesty must have a strong Ailment affinity,” Belzemine observed after he crafted a necklace that would immediately poison anyone who wore it; Simon guessed it was meant to be a literal poisoned gift. “A strong Corrosion one, too.”
“Affinity?” Simon asked.
“Every individual has affinities for specific elements or aspects of magic, depending on their tribe, Class, or personal nature. The stronger one’s affinity in an element, the easier they can learn affiliated spells or techniques.” Belzemine lowered her head. “Forgive me, Your Majesty, I should have taught you this earlier.”
“It’s fine.” This made Simon curious. “I never saw elemental affinities on my stat screen.”
“Only divination spells or specific Classes like Scholar can glean this information.” Divination spells would fail on Simon due to Anathemic Secrecy, and the one Scholar he knew was probably dead by now. “I could use my Healer Perks to figure out Your Majesty’s–”
“No magic until you’ve recovered, Agnes,” Simon insisted. It would be a useful piece of information, but there was no rush.
Weeks faded into months as they settled into their routine. Simon mostly split his time between managing his organization, taking the odd adventurer job, and crafting items. The Cobweb always paid on time, and the manaliths they provided slowly helped Belzemine regain her full strength. Most monster hunting quests at the Monoceros Guild dried up, though not for the reason Simon expected.
“The receptionist told me only specific teams are allowed to hunt monsters for now,” Eole told him after another fruitless request hunt, “including Ser Alphonse’s.”
“They’re trying to help their Paladin level-up quickly,” Simon guessed. “Oh well. We can gain both wealth and experience through other means.”
Simon had noticed that creating different cursed items provided a small influx of experience, which his Quick Learner Perk boosted further. He wouldn’t gain anything from creating copies, but even slight variations on a design—like a Ring of Cursed Water rather than Cursed Flame—provided some benefits. Small influxes accumulated, until a certain notification hit Simon once he finished his latest creation.
Overlord Level 26 Perk: Deathmastery III (Active): You can attempt to bind the soul of any creature you’ve killed within the last minute, if they are of a lower level and fail to resist the effect. If you are successful, the soul is trapped in a black gem of solid miasma and denied reincarnation until it is shattered.
A rather ghastly ability, especially considering its implications. A month spent freeing slaves, ensuring refugees would have a better life, and nursing Belzemine back to health didn’t give him a single level.
But creating cursed magical items for an underground criminal syndicate did.
Anna was right, his Class would never reward good behavior.
Well, at least the money he gained was well-invested. The goodwill he earned from abolitionists for his efforts in emancipating slaves, and the favor he gained among city officials by helping them with the refugee crisis, helped him glean information kept away from the public when it came to the empire’s civil war.
As many feared, Scalland’s scalefolk population had apparently declared for Vouivre, and Dassein had been forced to retreat from Beleth in order to reinforce War Party forces to the south. The Princedom had fallen soon after, putting all of Telluria firmly under Vouivre’s heel. Officials informed Simon that bloody tales of ethnic cleansing of shifter groups that had allied with the empire had reached their ears.
He kept that from Eole, knowing it would break her heart.
All in all, it appeared that while Vouivre still lacked the strength to fight the Magnos family one-on-one, she had managed to punch above her weight and become a strong contender for the raging civil war.
Everyone was speculating where the Overlord was. The Monoceros Guild promised a hefty reward to anyone providing them with information on their nemesis’ whereabouts, but the Cobweb had yet to reveal it. Simon guessed he made them more money with cursed items than what they would gain from the bounty.
And then… and then came news he would rather have done without.

The Copper Dragon was lively in the evening with the sound of their beer mugs hitting each other in the feasting hall.
“Congratulations on your recovery, Belzemine,” Eole told the elf with a wide smile after they completed their toast. “I am very glad to see you out of bed at long last.”
“Thank you, Lady Eole,” Belzemine replied with a faint smile. She still struggled to show emotions, but she was slowly growing more relaxed in their presence. “I am sorry I have been such a burden on you.”
“Think nothing of it,” Simon replied. He was happy to have at least saved her life. “You’ve done well.”
They had lived in Rosanne for two months now, and made quite a life for themselves here. Simon had come to enjoy his life there, the tranquil monotony of simple work in the company of good friends like Eole, and the peace of mind he enjoyed without having to deal with his family’s conflicts.
A pity he knew that time was coming to an end.
“I am in the mood to celebrate,” Eole said while sipping her beer. “I’ve been asked to sing during the opening of Rosanne’s Flower Festival next week. I think I could get you both front row seats for the celebration.”
Simon scowled. He guessed now was the time to break the bad news. “We can’t stay in Rosanne much longer.”
Eole blinked in surprise. “Why so?” she asked with a frown. “Did something happen? Is it the Cobweb?”
“Worse.” Simon shook his head. “My contacts in the government informed me that the League of Valne is preparing a draft. Its city-states are planning to form a coalition with Lore and retake Magvolia from Endymion while it is tearing itself apart. Everyone with a Class will be called to fight, including the entire Monoceros Guild.”
“No one will force you to do anything now that I have recovered, Master Simon,” Belzemine eagerly promised.
“Using force will get us nowhere,” Simon replied. “I don’t wish to fight my countrymen, and I can ignore the guild contract easily enough, but that will bring unwelcome questions.”
“The contract compels you to answer the guild’s call to arms,” Eole recalled, a scowl forming on her face. “They will come for me and Belzemine as well.”
“I’m afraid so. I suppose we could change identities, but the Copper Dragon will come under investigation.” Simon turned to Eole. “I’m sorry. I know you worked hard to turn it into a good place for runaway slaves.”
The news left Eole saddened, but she quickly regained her composure. “The Copper Dragon can run itself without us. I do not trust Leticia Septic, but I know employees who can continue where we left off.”
“I see.” That reassured Simon somewhat. He was loath to leave someone like Septic in charge. “Then we only have to find a good next destination.”
“Muse, perhaps?” Belzemine suggested. “Or the Berwick Islands?”
“We would need a ship, and the port is under tight surveillance,” Simon replied. “We could go to the Cobweb to smuggle us discreetly out of the city, but I don’t trust them.”
“We could go to my people’s sanctuary,” Eole suggested once more. “It should fly over this continent in a few weeks. I have learned of a mountain nearby that would let us catch it if we reach its summit. No one will track us down there.”
Her wording quickly caught Simon’s attention. “Fly over?”
Eole straightened up in her seat, looked around to make sure no one was eavesdropping, and then leaned forward. “I please ask you never to reveal what I am about to share, for it is the greatest secret of the kish people,” she whispered, her voice covered by the noise in the feasting hall. “You are my friends, and so I extend this trust to you.”
Simon and Belzemine nodded sharply. Eole took a deep breath and then revealed her secret.
“When the Year of the Doom tore the world asunder, part of Telluria was flung into the air by quakes,” she explained. “A small continent’s worth of rock was thrown into the sky, including villages, forests, lakes, even a manatree… yet this landmass never fell. Manaliths in the rocks kept it suspended in midair. It continues to fly to this day, hidden among the clouds.”
No way… Simon’s eyes widened in surprise. “Are you saying–”
“Yes. My people’s sanctuary is a floating island, and thus accessible only to those with the power of flight.” Eole smiled fondly as she recalled her homeland. “I know a chant that, once sung from the highest of mounts, will reach my people and cause them to send aid. They will help me carry you to our sacred land, as we have with some chosen brave souls across the centuries.”
“Mount Colt is only a few days’ ride from Rosanne,” Belzemine pointed out. “Would it be high enough?”
“Yes. That was the destination I had in mind.” Eole turned to Simon expectedly. “I would like it very much if you could both see my homeland. I am sure you will love it.”
Simon exchanged a glance with Belzemine, who would clearly go along with whatever he decided. It didn’t take him long to make his decision.
“I would love to see it too, Eole,” Simon said.
It would be a wonderful adventure.

A/N: well, this arc had a lot less adventuring that I had planned (I guess too much stuff to deal with on the Belzemine/Rosanne front) but better late than never I suppose. No chapter before the weekend at least (got work with B&C + a work trip starting on Saturday so less time to write).

Balzemine probably got whisked back to illusea last reign. She is probably presumed dead in this reign, so the Oracle decided to nuke the capital. Belzamine is probably related to the Oracle and Frea. If the Oracle is able to throw around Tier X spell, what could the Mage Noble crestone do?

The sanctuary does have its secrets, but Eole and her people wear their hearts on their sleeves. She's very much a good person, if a bit too idealistic for her own good.

To be honest, I'm leery about giving Simon teleportation or the like until the very late game, because it trivializes a lot of hurdles in time loops XD

Simon needs to get some kind of traveling perk. Also I can't help but wonder whether the Overlord class has some kind of hidden trap at later levels, like a perk to summon the soul of the previous owner. Posession sounds like something an archdemon would do :D

As for the Imperial Civil War plus Vouivre intervention...it is a bloodbath, as can be expected. Seriously, House Lannister in Westeros would probably say 'even by our standards, it is a bit too much'. All the sides have been taught well by Balzam the Cruel...this is just atrocity after atrocity. I'm a bit surprised the Paladin is taking so much time to level up. I thought he would be at a relatively high level already, but he looks very much to have big level issues, if not up to the obstacles Simon is facing. Level 26...one more Level gained. This Reign is getting quite profitable, both in the secrets, abilities, and future knowledge gained. Not getting killed immediately offers very much a lot of opportunities for growth.

And Norbelle is revealed to have a Noble Class...one more of the twenty-two Noble Classes in a Magnos' hands. Because of course. I understand why all the other big powers of the world are deciding to jump into the fray while the Empire is weakened...besides Balzam's legendary cruelty, of course. There are way too many warmongers and dangerous people formally bound to the Crimson Throne of Endymion. Seriously, at that point, we have only Laurianne who has not had her Class revealed, and I wouldn't bet against her having one.

Why do I have the feeling that the Kish sanctuary is something with far more sinister secrets than Eole cares to admit? There is no way those manaliths held up for four hundred years, they are keeping it aloft with human sacrifice, don't they?

Maybe in this kingdom you could make Simon's life a little happier. I don't know, maybe in the sanctuary he could start a family with Eole and have small children, of course. But obviously, this wouldn't end well-he'd lose his newly formed family for some reason, maybe because the war reached them or the world fell apart due to the demonic barrows. It would be interesting to see how you tell it, Void. After the loss, Simon realizes everything he lost by dying and how he's never going to get it back, how the Overlord class doesn't allow him to gain levels through good deeds, and so on. Then Simon becomes more evil, and maybe, as the kingdoms pass, more cynical. That would be incredible, Void.

A fun Reign. I'm liking it quite a bit. It will end in tragedy, I'm sure of it, but it was nice while it lasted.
