I remember that when I was about 16, an older friend came up to me once—at a party, upon a lifetime—and said: You need to get out of your head. The party is inside. Why are you here alone, looking at the stars, all broody and stuff? What do you think—Prince Charming is going to come find you here and something magical is going to happen? And I answered: Maybe… (thinking, wow, that’s accurate). I’m a romantic—so what? And he said: You’re not a romantic, you’re idealistic. Meaning: not realistic. Fantasy-seeking. Poetry-reading. Rom-com-loving. In love with happy endings, but unwilling to admit that Baby would have probably been done with Johnny after that summer at the resort—realistically speaking.
