I know people on my mother's side have a tendency to lose their hearing with age - nobody really knows when my grandma lost her hearing, because she had never listened to anyone else talking anyway, and was already in the habit of interrupting someone mid-sentence to talk about whatever she just thought of, regardless of what anyone else was talking about.
