Next year's problems
🕑 Added 2025-12-19 14:58:01 +0000 UTCEvery time I get a comic idea - or even half of an idea - I write it down to the notes app on my phone, and sometimes they float there half-cooked for months, until I figure out how to flesh them out. There's a lot of comics that were born by me relaising that two half-ideas can be combined together for one whole idea, this one included.
I wanted to make a comic about my favourite part of the holidays - the fact that for almost two solid weeks, all my problems are next year's problems, I can simply let them be and go completely feral in peace. The secondary idea I had only written down as "kitchen sink tentacles", inspired by the time me and my boyfriend had to determine where a mysterious stink was coming from in the house, concluded that it's the sink, and I thought it would be funny if just having an inexplicable tentacle creature appearing in your sink was a casual everyday household problem.

SF author Joan D. Vinge did the same things with index cards.

I'm reading a book called "The Work of Art" and one of the cartoonists interviewed for it does a similar thing with ideas except hers is box wth slips of paper that she periodically goes through when nothing is coming immediately to mind. Seems a delightful strategy 😁
