I also like to think that the Hall Monitor was the first "trouble maker student" that was given a choice, here or prison.

"Let go of the past" could mean many things. The idea that Jess was a guy, makes sense as I'm sure that each "teaching buddy" could have had (at least) similar personalities to the three new students. I like the (personal) idea that Jess was the only guy and the other two where hear for different circumstances.
