#244 - Home Recording Mixing & Mastering COURSE
🕑 Added 2022-10-07 15:30:01 +0000 UTCMy friends, a huge majority of our Gold/VIP/Platinum members voted for the topic of recording, mixing, and mastering on the wishlist for this month - so I made an in-depth 20+ minute course for you :)
In this course, we will mix and master my latest song 'Waterworks' together. It should be out on all streaming platforms by now and I hope you enjoy it!
Here's the full course in a downloadable folder, I also added a guitar pro file/tab of the song: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/198OMMWu8vQOVBoaKyUFxtcDvV0F70cJP?usp=sharing
I added timestamps on YouTube to hopefully make the long video easy to navigate for you. Most of the plugins I used are from the Waves Platinum+ bundle (I am not endorsed or sponsored by them).
I hope this helps you on your home recording journey, this was really fun for me - hope I get to do it again soon :)
And by the way, here's a Dropbox folder with the course - DO NOT share this one with anyone outside Patreon, it will crash all Dropbox links on the page for months due to the filesize if it reaches too many downloads - thanks: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6bkj79v7vazbb21/AACilQhFoYUzlmRSybfzRdRma?dl=0

Lg Thomas

I was also looking for a basic rundown of the whole thing, this should help immensely, thanks!

Not sure if you're actually asking for the poor man's definitions, Stephen but in case you are: EQ - modify the volume a particular frequency/band of frequencies (ie, add more bass frequencies, filter out a particular noisy frequency etc). Bus - combined output of several channels that have been grouped (allowing you to put effects / eq on more of the sound as a group). Compressor - modify the volume of the signal based on how loud the signal currently is. Idea being that if you have lots of quiet sounds and moments where the sound is loud, you cannot just up the volume to hear the quiet sounds because it affects the loud sounds. So, instead, you send it into a compressor that measures the current volume and modifies the volume on the fly. You then can tell the compressor you want it to have lower volume on loud sounds and higher volume on quiet bits.

I love having more mixing guides! In the spirit if recording and mixing: I'm having trouble finding info on recording and mixing distorted guitars using DI boxes, reamps, amps, and live mics. Information on those processes would be really helpful.

This was helpful. It would be useful (if you haven't already) to break down the terms of "EQ'ing" , "Bus" , & "Compressor" and give us the poor mans defnintion.

music is a journey w many roads to the destination. just get a daw and start using it. takes a while and it starts getting easier to understand. bernth, as always thx for sharing some behind the scenes. hope the guitar is dried out by now.

Hey Matt, yes that's the exact order I had in the original project! :)

Bernth, when you're going over your effects for each track: are you going in the order they appear in your signal chain? Each effect can be so different depending on where they appear in the chain and I've definitely messed up some stems because I didn't use a correct signal chain but would get frustrated and nuke the whole thing instead of looking it up.

Amazing! Thanks a lot for this. And that song, waterworks... oh man, I haven't words to describe your incredible creativity and talent.

I don't even know how to use a DAW, or even know where to start. I need DAW 101.
RobZ
Oooo yes I needed this!

This is really awesome as it is really difficult to even know where to start with this stuff... Thanks again, sir!
