Wow, 15 minutes using this for Alt picking and my pickarm is warm!

Oh yeah! When I'm chugging, I definitely anchor my hand on the bridge. But I've found that, at least for me, if I leave my hand anchored and try to sweep up or do a "fast" run up, my hand rotates and messes with my picking. So, chugs aside, I have been working on keeping my hand (and arm) slightly elevated for a smooth glide up and down. I'd never say that's the "best and only way", since I've seen some really fast players who don't (like MAB).

Lemme ask you; I have this automatic tendency to drop my pinky to anchor my hand when picking. I’ve tried to just mount my hand on the bridge- anyone else do this? Seems like an antipattern to me but I struggle to orient my picking without doing it

I'll thave to look into the Pykmax picks. Thanks, Erick. I'm open to anything that will help me improve technique.

Michael Latham

Thanks, Peter. That's definitely something I've been working on for years now. Too much pick and I get jammed up, and too little pick and I miss notes. I feel pretty comfortable with my depth today, but am always open to try new pick types to see if something is even more comfortable.

Another tip that really has helped me, if you have the money, is getting one of the Pykmax picks. It kind of forces you to hold the pick correctly. Only down side is it doesn't hold the smaller jazz 3 picks very well without a little tweeking. This, and keeping your wrist and hands loose and not locked up.

Hey Michael. I have the exact same thumb wiggle. Especially on wound strings and string crossing. I found it was because my plectrum was too deep into the strings. Your thumb is basically trying to navigate the pick up and over strings. I really practiced hard to pick more “shallow”. I even bought a stylus pick. This really helped me to use the least amount of plectrum to hit the string but also glide across strings as well. Hope that helps. I feel your pain though!

200 bpm...pffffttt...I challenge myself to get to 110 bpm! 🙃 I did realize recently, thanks to one of Bernth's shorts, that I wiggle my thumb when trying to play faster. While, maybe, I can pick faster on a single string (usually the wound strings E-D), switching strings <s>is crap</s> really doesn't work. My focus now: slight pick angle for a good 'escape', 'locked' thumb position, arm off the body to easily move down and up, and LIGHT fretting.

I am on it! :D

Jesus, I am still tweaking the alternate picking workout control + endurance from August and this guy is throwing the next challenge on us 😨
