New to your patreon and reactions but fun fact: when they wrapped up the season and the show was cancelled so they weren't coming back, Alan Tudyk (Wash) gave Joss Whedon, the writer and creator, the big red button from this episode to call them all back if the show was ever renewed

One thing that makes this episode even better on rewatch - early in the season, on Persephone (where they pick up Book, Simon/River, etc), Kaylee mentions to Mal that they need a new port compression coil / catalyzer, which is the part that breaks in this episode. She says she sure would like a new one, and he basically says too bad. She says "compression coil busts and we're drifting", and he tells her it best not bust then. Also, when splitting the groups into the 2 shuttles, he puts the 4 people the alliance want in 1 (doc/river, wash/zoe), and the 4 that aren't actively wanted on the other (Inara, Book, Kaylee, Jayne). And finally, the pun in the episode title that you may already have realized but slips past some people - they ARE out of gas. But not gasoline - oxygen.

This may be in my top 10 favorite episodes of television of all time. Love it. Now that Jordan brought it up, I think they did smooth Nathan Fillians skin and maybe some eye makeup to make him look younger and more boyish in the flashbacks. Thanks for all the awesome content!
