In the first scene, Lipton, the guy they say is the "new first sergeant", wasn't new to Easy Company, he had just been promoted to first sergeant. He has that scar on his face because we saw him get hit in the last episode.

Hehe, in the intro when you were talking about using the lessons from this show to deal with fear in your own life, I was half-expecting you to say, "And then I realized I was already dead and I stopped being afraid," but I'm guessing you weren't really drawing inspiration from Spiers.
