For now I'm assuming the villagers are just scaredy-cats, and competent adventurer types shouldn't have a problem with fear. But the actual ghosts themselves aren't defined, so you could make them be any kind you want, even level-draining spectres or more solid undead like nuns of the Bone Goddess.

Eww! That ones especially imaginative and gross. Love it. I was expecting some kind of haunting attack or fear attack from the river though. Did I just miss it?
