At first I thought it was a second conditional ( if + past tense + would), but on a second thought, your comment got me thinking if i was right and i guess i really was mistaken here and you can use the present tense. Im sorry for the inconvenience, I was trying to help, but Im not a native also:)

Hi again! In this sentence you need to use past tense: “I know you think he is your friend, but if he really WAS, why would he lie to you?”
