The Hand Behind the Veil

Ayy thanks! I think I'm finally getting a flow of the story. One bad trait I have is I find it difficult to make the initial chapters as (comparatively) good as the ones I write later on. That can be easily fixed by planning all characters in-depthly beforehand but that's something for the Third Series to consider 😂

The Hand Behind the Veil

Hey man thanks so much for the super thoughtful comment! Its super fun to read you diving deep into Thorvyn's head like that. About the self-doubt thing, that's a sharp observation. You are right that his observations are usually spot-on. But there are exceptions too like this. Doubts and uncertainty. I guess for him, it's less about doubting what he's observing, his ability to observe, and more about the sheer strangeness of this new world. Back on Earth, human motives were complex, but here, with magic and ancient pacts, sometimes even the obvious truth feels like it's hiding another layer. Plus, he's probably still adjusting to being in a body that's so much stronger and more instinct-driven, as its barely been two months, so his Earth-brain is sometimes battling his new barbarian-body's gut feelings. It's something I'm trying to play with. Your thoughts on the transmigration vs. pure fantasy angle are interesting. Its like a What If to consider. I definitely see what you mean about the "Veil Between Worlds" and connecting the realms and also mental scape potential, that's some rich stuff there. You're right, the isekai trope has been overdone, and I get the annoyance with the saturation. But for Thorvyn, that "Earthborn" perspective and the jarring experience of transmigration is pretty central to his journey and how he reacts to everything. It's the core of his philosophical struggle and his unique way of looking at this new reality. Definitely a fun hypothesis, I love your ideas for a different path, but I think I'm gonna stick to my guns with the transmigration for now! 😉 Thanks again for reading so closely and for the awesome feedback. It really helps to hear these different perspectives

This story gets better every chapter. I like the evolution of Thorvyn into some sort of Samurai warrior. Soldier, philosopher and a code of honor mixed out of Earthborn and Barbarian. Perhaps the changing system will reward his introspection and keen observing with appropriate skills. And I think, this uncle is creepy, real creepy 😬🫣!!

Hey Veiled, curious to see whether there will be noticeable differences. :) I really liked the first paragraph. It is a nice description and the elaboration clarifies what it means and also acts as a kind of window into Thorvyn’s thoughts (the whole writing perspective is, but in this scene one really feels it). Also I like the way he observes - however I can’t yet decide whether I’m missing some explanation for his self-doubt… What he observes is subtle, sure, but his observations also feel very much meticulous and on point. So I’m debating if I want some internal consideration of him being unsure about it because he, while a philosopher, always was bad with accurately reading real people or whatnot. Lastly, I was again thinking about the alternative route of Thorvyn not being transmigrated (or reincarnated or what the specific term for ‘waking up in another persons’s adult body in another world’ is^^)… You are making use of the otherworldly background - different to some real bad isekai stories where it only just serves as an insert-knowledge background - but I still think it has at least as much potential as a solely fantasy story as it has as an isekai one. Might be my annoyance at the oversaturation of isekai these days, but regarding his background’s relevance in this chapter: his transformation can still come about as an effect of physical trauma or the like - there is precedence for that changing characters and even cognitive/intellectual potential -, his philosophical acuity from being a philosopher at heart instead of a earth-philosophy-student, his societal and historical knowledge from the tribes shaman (and keeper of knowledge), and actual otherworldly knowledge from having visions of earth or even different worlds — is a readymade way for this to happen with the Veil Between Worlds thing - just more in a mindscape sense. I think this has more potential for exploitation for the story than the transmigration trope, as it has more threads than that single one. And I think your story offers itself pretty well for it, as it doesn’t disregard but also doesn’t require the world-crossing. So should you not have plans for this background already and should ever think of overhauling this aspect… :D
