One of the best movies of all time. Early in the movie when viewers first notice Vin Diesell, they may miss that part what overwhelmed the Jewish guy (Private Mellish) emotionally was holding the Hitler Youth knife. After serving as tank gunner in North Africa and being awarded a medal for destroying a bridge, my grandfather landed on a Normandy beach on D-Day. He rarely talked about D-Day, but he told my brother that he could hear bullets whistling by.

While there's no denying the technical brilliance of this film, my main issues with it remain the fact that 1) it never really made me feel that invested in its characters; they all feel like standard war movie archetypes who are just there to serve the plot, and 2) the very emotionally manipulative modern-day coda, which still feels like Spielberg trying to shove a bunch of chopped onions into your eyes. It's weird how his 'crowd-pleaser' films virtually always feel so effortless, whereas his more 'prestige picture' attempts nearly always feel as though he's trying *really* hard ("Munich" being the exception for me). 🤷‍♂

God I love this movie. Fun fact btw the 2 soldiers in the beginning that tried to surrender and were shot said "Please don’t shoot me! I am not German, I am Czech, I didn’t kill anyone! I am Czech!".

No-one's mentioned Band of Brothers yet. It WILL be in the comments once this goes on YouTube. It's a miniseries (10 episodes) produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg following the story of a company of paratroopers through the war. It's very similar in style to Private Ryan, but the characters and story are real (mostly), as opposed to the fictional plot of SPR. Definitely worth a watch at some point.

Excellent reaction, Addie. It's one of Steven Spielberg's very emotional films. This is my girlfriend's dad's favorite movie (it's one of his favorites). If you want more Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks movies, I recommend Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Bridge of Spies, and The Post.

Steven Spielberg has said that he had a bunch of veterans that were there on D-Day come to the premier, and they said that the beginning was so realistic that it was almost like being back on the beach. Some of them walked out because they weren’t able to handle experiencing it all over again, and who could blame them.

My grandfather was a part of the 2nd wave on this beach and saw the carnage first hand. That "Ranger" tab you see on their shoulders? Their motto is "Rangers Lead The Way!". That's what they do and it's why Miller's company got the assignment that they did. My father was an Airborne Ranger in Vietnam, he was a LRRP Team Leader and earned 2 Silver Stars and 3 Bronze with the combat "V" with his Purple Heart. I was in Desert Storm (Gulf War 1). Dad and I were both in tears leaving this movie and we weren't sure we wanted my Grandfather to see it due to a history of heart problems. He saw it and said it was the hardest thing he'd seen since the war. Miller's last words are directed to Ryan in the film, but in truth they are directed at every person who watches this film. "Earn this!"
