I’m late to the party but, if you haven’t read the book yet, I have a suggestion. I almost always prefer to read books. However, in this case, I highly recommend the audiobook read by the brilliant R.C. Bray.

Only beaten by Everything Everywhere All at Once, Jojo Rabbit, and (no one I know ever has heard of this one but) Tokyo Godfathers. All movies that show the enormous ability people have, and the incredible lengths they will go, to care about another person. The kinds of movies that make you love humanity.

One of my favorite things about The Martian is that when the movie came out there were people who thought it was based on a true story, that we had already been to Mars and accidentally left someone behind.

Yes absolutely read the book! Fun fact, everything in the book and in this movie is based in real science. Technically this could actually be done IRL if this needed to be done. The writers of the book/movie wanted to use as much realistic problems as they could and in doing so, were solving every problem. Its honestly inspiring.

Addie, if you want another movie where the main character is essentially alone for the movie, and of course if you haven’t seen it, you should watch Castaway with Tom Hanks.

Great reaction to the movie! It is definitely one of the more inspiring movies, and one of the best space movies in recent times. As you noticed at the end, the movie is based on a novel, written by the author Andy Weir, and though the novel is a lot more detailed, the movie does a great job of translating the novel into that medium. I would definitely recommend anyone that loved the movie, and especially the problem solving Watney does, to read the book, as the book is very detailed about the math and science, while also making the explanations and problem solving fun and easy to follow. In fact, Weir spent a lot of time and research making sure the science and math was as accurate as possible and admits that there are only a some inaccuracies that he deliberately chose to write. For example, the storm in the beginning of the story, which wouldn't have been able to do that kind of damage real life, since the atmosphere on mars is so thin, it wouldn't have enough energy to do so, but he needed a reason for Watney to be stranded on Mars. Plus the novel also goes into a lot more detail into the whole travel to Ares 4, with one of my favorite scenes of problem solving in the whole novel happening there, which was unfortunately not included in the movie.

I totally agree with you. I've suggested this movie to Addie in her July Q&A alongside Inception (2010), Dunkirk (2017), & Tenet (2020), as part of my Christopher Nolan movie list, since she reacted to The Dark Knight trilogy.

Hopefully, a Tony Scott poll happens someday because I would love to see you react to purely action movies like Days of Thunder (1990), Crimson Tide (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), Spy Game (2001), & Deja Vu (2006). And also Speed (1994), also starring Jeff Daniels, Ronin (1998), also starring Sean Bean, and The 355 (2022), also starring Jessica Chastain, for a future poll.

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend! 😊 I love this movie so much! It's one of my all-time favorite must-watch movies. Love Matt Damon, and the rest of the great cast. Fun Fact: Speaking of the great cast, there are 7 actors from one MCU in this movie. I very highly recommend you check out the book of the same name that the movie is based on. It's by Andy Weir. It's a little different. It goes into more detail about what's going on with the crew in space, the people at NASA, and of course more with Mark Watney on Mars. Have a great day! 😊
