I think the only of Carrey's early work that still holds up is Dumb & Dumber, although I'd gladly watch any of them before a Wes Anderson film. Well, except Fantastic Mr Fox. That one slaps.

If you are not familiar with these classic Jim Carrey movies, you should incorporate some of these into the comedy mix at some point- Dumb & Dumber, Bruce Almighty, and The Cable Guy. The Truman Show is also quite unique and interesting, and you'd probably like that one.

Me too! Love The Focker trilogy! This was a hard choice for me, Addie. I picked Anchorman, but.... I like Jim Carrey movies, and Bill & Ted and Caddyshack are also a lot of fun. Caddyshack has the iconic pool scene.... I won't say any more about that. And there's also the lightning scene. And Chevy Chase. And Bill Murray. And a wily, dancing gopher. So, this was a hard choice. But Anchorman is so absurdly ridiculously funny.... "News team, assemble!!!"

For me, peak Jack Black is "High Fidelity" (though he's a supporting character in it), "King Kong" (ditto), "Nacho Libre," and the criminally underrated "Bernie" (also directed by Richard Linklater).

Honestly, I feel you can attribute the votes for most of these titles to nostalgia -- abeit for different generations. I'm a late Gen-Xer, so I gravitate more toward "Caddyshack" and "Bill and Ted"... and, as a Coen Brothers fan, "The Big Lebowski" as well. Most mainstream comedies since the mid-'90s are just too broad and un-subtle for my current sensibilities; something like "Old School" makes even "Animal House" look like a Truffaut film to me. 🤨

It's the only one of his films on the poll, so I wasn't weighing it against his other work... only Bill & Ted which I suspect is getting most of its votes via nostalgia.

Of course, Linklater himself has said he largely directed it (as well as his "Bad News Bears" remake) in order to help finance some of his more indie/less mainstream projects (I imagine at least some of that money went into "Boyhood").

While not Richard Linklater’s best movie, “School of Rock” is definitely his most fun and accessible one for general audiences, thus it’s popularity.

Well, it isn't now. When the hell did "School of Rock" become that beloved? It's like one of Richard Linklater's weakest films, IMO. 🤷‍♂️

That's fair, you're not obligated to like everything see. I personally love Ace Ventura, always have and always will. And you generally can't go wrong with a Wes Anderson film.

Sorry, but "Ace Ventura" is the second unfunniest movie I've ever seen (after "Wedding Crashers"). Most of these other post-20th century titles are too broad for my taste as well. These days I'll laugh my ass off to a Wes Anderson film more than any mainstream comedy.

I'll also go for "Caddyshack" and "The Big Lebowski" (though I think the latter is kind of overrated). "School of Rock" is slight but enjoyable (but certainly not essential viewing), but everything else is crap, as far as I'm concerned.

Which is not only a ridiculous proposition (art is subjective) but also incorrect. The poll is which movie you'd like Addie to react to. That's a completely different question! It's always interesting to see people under 35 react to "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and/or "Parenthood," given how unfamiliar they are with Keanu Reeves' more comedic side, despite the fact that many of us older than that is how we were first introduced to him.

School Of Rock is absolutely perfect for you. You'll love it! (21 Jump Street is crazy hilarious, and alot of fun, too, but School Of Rock is sweet and heartwarming, while also being weird and funny.)

School of Rock is so rarely done as a reaction movie because it has so much music, but dang if it ain't great fun! Some of these others did not age well, but are still funny if you watch them with the context in which they were made.
