I didn't expect this to be quite so cheesy, but once I leaned into it, I had a lot of fun! I was a lil worried about how scary this was going to be; it wasn't really scary, but I will say that there were a few good jump scares! It was fun to see Hugh Jackman in this as well. Enjoy!

So here’s some trivia, I listened to the movie’s audio commentary and the guy who plays Dracula (who you’ve already seen in Mission Impossible II) met his future wife during the filming of this movie. She plays one of Dracula’s brides, Verona. They’re still married to this day, with three children.

When this movie exploded on the screen, Da-Brie was everywhere! 😄 (... because of all the cheese, see, ... erm, anyway) There's a lot of things going on in this one, obviously, but honestly I just kept thinking was "Man, that guy was great as the narrator in 300!" I'd give this one a 5/10. It's kind of all over the place, some of the special effects and action scenes are neat, some are goofy. Some of the jokes land, others don't. It also feels a little too long. It looks like that's a bit higher than the 24% it's got on Rotten Tomatoes, but I've seen worse movies than this. 🤷♂️

I almost forgot to mention, this film version of Van Helsing is different from Bram Stoker's novel. In 'Dracula' he's a medical professor with knowledge of the occult and is the nemesis of Dracula. While the Hugh Jackman version was heavily inspired by James Bond, Vampire Hunter D, and Solomon Kane. And while Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde aren't traditional 'Universal monsters', the character fits within that world.

Aha! I genuinely surprised a recommendation of mine got picked but I'm happy. This is a cult favorite, and a follow up in sorts to 'The Mummy' series because of the director and composer. The film is a homage/tribute to Universal's classic monsters from the 30s and 40s. I a huge fan of the Wolf Man and I remember seeing this in the theaters as a kid. I am a fan of the werewolf designs and I think it was a nice detail for the Van Helsing werewolf to emote with such regret and sadness in his face and ears once he realizes that Anna is dead. A genuine popcorn film and a throwback to the films of the golden age of Hollywood!

The bittersweetness of the end scene isn’t just because she gets to be with her family again. If you remember at the beginning when Van Helsing was in Rome, he was told that Valerious the Elder made a deal that his entire family would never enter paradise until they had vanquished Dracula. When we see the clouds opening up, they have finally all been granted access to paradise. 🥲 I’m so glad you enjoyed the movie I suggested! 🥰 It does have some funny cheezy lines in it. That’s for sure! 😂

Same. I love this film. I think this movie is highly underrated. It's such a fun time. It has my favorite incarnation of werewolves, and of Dracula. This is probably the best job of pulling a lot of the classic monsters into one movie. I love Hugh Jackman's take on the Van Helsing character. They gave an interesting backstory to him in this film. I'd love to explore the lore of his character and learn more about his backstory.

The black and white prologue especially is sort of an homage to the 1930s/1940s Universal monster movies (which I also recommend, especially Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, and Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein

Happy Monday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed Van Helsing (2004) as your first Halloween movie of the year. This is my all-time favorite Hugh Jackman movie and I own it on DVD in both Widescreen (1.85:1) & Full Screen (1.33:1) formats. This was also directed by Stephen Sommers, the director of The Mummy (1999) & The Mummy Returns (2001). There used to be a Fortress Dracula walkthrough maze at Universal Studios Hollywood. If you wanna get to know all of the classic Universal Monsters even better, then I highly recommend the classic movies Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and The Wolf Man (1941). #UniversalMonstersForAddieCounts
