If you’d like some backstory for Annie Wilkes, the second season of Castle Rock explores her character a bit. It’s a rather uneven series. Some good moments and some pretty awful ones so I’m not sure it’s one you could watch for the channel. Still, I thought you might find it interesting

As far as Stephen King adaptations to film or TV, this is in my top five. And put the hobbling scene aside, my favorite shot of the film is when she's talking about serials, and she gets more and more intense, as the camera slowly zooms in, until it is just her face shouting the words "He didn't jump out of the kaka-doo-de-car!" Another great moment, and I feel like this one must be a combination of acting and directing, is when it's raining and Kathy Bates is depressed. But she's not really sad-depressed, she's numb-depressed. Because when a character in a movie is portraying depression, it's usually just 'I'm sad'. She played a more nuanced version of manic depressive in this role. She said, deadpan "god. I love you, Paul". Her mood didn't shift. She's not sad in that scene, she's just... not feeling. great acting.

A fun part of the novel Misery is that occasionally you get to read some sections of the actual story Paul is typing and, sure enough, all the n's appear to be handwritten because Paul hand to pencil them all in.

I think I first noticed her in Primary Colors and she will break your heart in that movie. I also loved her in The Waterboy, Kathy Bates has the most range of any actor.

Same here. I've also seen her in Around the World in 80 Days (2004) with Jackie Chan & Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell (2019), as well as Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (2023). Here's a fun fact, Kathy Bates & Victor Garber (Miss Hannigan & Mr. Warbucks in The Wonderful World of Disney's Annie (1999)) were also in Titanic (1997) as Margaret "Molly" Brown & Thomas Andrews.

Well, it may be Addie's second 'horror' movie adaptation of Stephen King's works but she's already watched his Frank Darabont-directed adaptation of the novella, "The Shawshank Redemption".

The late William Goldman, who adapted the Stephen King novel for the screenplay, wrote the scene as depicted in the novel. The director, Rob Reiner, changed the 'hobbling' scene and shot it. Goldman was furious but when he saw the test screening with an audience... Rob Reiner was right - what worked on the printed page would have immediately removed all sense of humanity from Annie Wilkes' character on the big screen. Goldman was an accomplished screenwriter and novelist. He wrote "The Princess Bride" novel as well as the screenplay for the Rob Reiner film. He wrote the original screenplay for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". Sometimes even Goldman couldn't predict how an audience would perceive a film scene.

Finally someone else who was introduced to Kathy Bates through Annie! Although I'd say Misery is her greatest performance, I'll always see her as Miss Hannigan! XD

Addie, if you want something REALLY scary, try the 2000 Extended Director's Cut of The Exorcist (1973), it'll be a lovely day when you watch that movie. #TheExorcistForAddieCounts

King himself has claimed "The Green Mile" is the most faithful film adaptation of any of his works, but I have to imagine this one is up there as well.

I don't recall what happened to the sheriff. I read that novel barely out of high school, back when I was a horror geek. What she did to his feet stuck in my head for sure. lol

The 'hobbling' scene is a must for any movie reaction follower. I know you've previously seen James Caan as the dad in "Elf" as well as Sonny in the "Godfather" movies, but I'd also recommend "The Rain People," "The Gambler," and "Thief." And I know you're familiar with Rob Reiner from his directorial effort that is "The Princess Bride" as well as him playing Leonardo DiCaprio's dad in "The Wolf of Wall Street," but I'd also highly recommend "This Is Spinal Tap" (in which he both acts and directs), "The Sure Thing," "Stand by Me," and "When Harry Met Sally..."

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 As much as I love the "IT" movies, "Misery" is easily my top favorites from book-to-movie adaptations from Stephen King. Fun Fact: Kathy Bates won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for her performance in this movie in 1991. For more Kathy Bates I very highly recommend the 1991 "Fried Green Tomatoes".
