I believe he also directed 'Days of Future Past' and 'Apocalypse.' Given that he's also had allegations of sexual assault brought against him, he's also one of the more 'problematic' filmmakers working these days.

The very first scene you see Keyser light his cigarette with his left hand and Keaton sort of physically give up/collapse. That’s when he realises how he’s been played. I like that moment because without it it’s possible that the whole thing is a story Verbal is spinning. In real life if you’re going to lie to the police it’s best not to give any details at all. The truth is vague, lies are detailed. Also, you have a right to remain silent and you should always have a lawyer present. The title of The Usual Suspects and the production company “The Blue Parrot” are both Casablanca references and Casablanca ie one of the best movies of all time.

My favorite tidbit that foreshadows the twist is something so small that it's never actually "revealed" in the movie itself. They say that Keyser Söze is Turkish, with possibly one German parent. "Keyser" is pronounced the same as 'Kaiser', the German word for "Emperor". "Söze" is part of the Turkish idiom 'söze boğmak', which means "to talk unnecessarily too much and cause confusion". If you take the two languages together, the name means something along the lines of "Emperor Talks Too Much". Since "Verbal" spends the entire film rambling and dissembling, if you picked up on the name it's a hint almost from the beginning.

Not that it matters much, but the title of the film is a reference to the absolute classic movie, Casablanca. ("Round up the usual suspects.") Also, the laughter by the core actors during the line up at the beginning was real. Benicio del Toro wouldn't stop doing ridiculous "accents" when he read the line. It completely cracked up the other actors. And finally, the cigarette flip to the eye was absolutely real and absolutely accidental. When Peter Greene flicked it towards Stephen Baldwin, Greene fully expected it to hit Baldwin in the chest. It was a one in a million fluke it hit him in the eye.

Wow, Giancarlo Esposito and Benicio del Toro are so young in this! (I don't think Addie's watched Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul so she probably wouldn't have recognized Esposito from anything. But he did have a small role as a cellmate in Trading Places so technically she has seen him in at least one other movie. 😄)

First time I watched this I had heard nothing about it. It had just hit cable, and I liked a lot of the actors in it, so I decided to watch it. OMG I was blown away. I kind of feel sorry for anyone watching it for the first time now, because it has been referenced and spoken about so often. I am glad I got to watch it totally blind.

Happy Monday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed The Usual Suspects (1995). This, and Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), are my favorite Bryan Singer movies. I even own the Special Edition DVD with the Widescreen (2.39:1) & Full Screen (1.33:1) versions on one side and the bonus features on the other.
