These are all great films, but you MUST watch Million Dollar baby and Gran Torino at least once in your life. It truely is one of his best movies that comes from his later life as an actor. He directed and starred in both Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino. Directing his own movies he stars in. Its just amazing.

Unforgiven was my introduction to Clint Eastwood western movies as a kid. I saw it in the theater. Loved it. My favorite on reflection I think. It's just a great movie regardless of what order in my eyes. Just throwing my anecdote into the mix. I hadn't ever watched any westerns fully before it, but I saw bits and pieces of random ones on TV and could just tell it was different than the pow pow pow that I occasionally saw on TV. Funny thing. The song Unforgiven by Metallica came out a year before that so I had this weird idea that the movie was related some how before I went in the theater. I didn't even know it was a western before going in. Of course it was silly.

Hi Addie, for future reference, I would also recommend these films not otherwise mentioned. The War films (Where Eagles Dare 1968 & Kelly`s Heroes) 1970). Also, the Westerns (High Plains Drifter 1973 & Pale Rider 1985). The U.S. Political thriller (Absolute Power 1997). :)

I searched and he did 15 westerns. An interesting question might be if Addie will only watch 2 Clint Eastwood films, other than Unforgiven what would be the other one? I'm no Eastwood expert but The Good The Bad and the Ugly might be a choice because it has a lot of the memorable elements in it. And yea, I don't mind if people watch Unforgiven first. I have to shrug lol.

Clint Eastwood also did movies like Every Which Way But Loose (1978), The Gauntlet (1977) as well as a bunch of his westerns. I like the iconic poncho wearing characters of his. I dunno what about Pale Rider (1976) or Outlaw Josey Wales (1985)? Not sure but probably no poncho there? Anyway he did several genres of movies. In Unforgiven he's an older version of a western character... that's one reason to watch a couple of his younger other iconic westerns first. Unforgiven is like a commentary on the genre.

Clint's directorial debut was "Play Misty For Me", the same year that "Dirty Harry" was released. It was a good start to what became his mainstay career.

All of these..good choices. But hear me out—the entire Man With No Name trilogy (Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly). Also he directed Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil about my hometown Savannah Georgia and filmed there.

Yes to all. If it stars Clint Eastwood, it is worth a watch, even the bad ones. If it is directed by Clint Eastwood it is also worth a watch, and I do not believe there are any bad ones... though I could be wrong.

Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven are both fantastic. I like Gran Turino too. Dirty Harry is ok, a bit dated maybe. And American Sniper is decent, although since it doesn’t actually star Clint Eastwood I’d probably suggest one of the ones that does given the theme. 🤷‍♂️

I’m so stoked for this! But here's my take on "Unforgiven"... That was Clint Eastwood’s final magnum opus in Westerns. Starting with that would be like eating dessert before a meal, in my opinion. If you’re going to start with a Clint Eastwood western, make it something like “High Plains Drifter” (1973 - or one of his other early Hollywood westerns). Or you can go back further to his Italian “spaghetti” westerns like “A Fistful of Dollars” (1964). Maybe watch a couple more of his early westerns first. It’s not totally necessary to enjoy “Unforgiven,” but you will surely have a better feel for what the character is about.
