November 2026 Update! (EXTENDED)

Hello all dear Patrons, it's been a good 4 months now since my work has been made exclusive to all incredible Patreon supporters. It is time to share what my future intentions are now that I've finally decided on what to do, after so much deliberation.
On January 16th, 2016, I released this very first fanart of Horrortale ever. It is this fanart that propelled me into the world of AU's and in exploring my own storytelling skills as an illustrator. In my eyes, this date is Horrortale's "Birthday", and January 16th, 2026, will mark its ten year anniversary.
No joy compares to how it felt illustrating and sharing this story with such beautiful readers online. it is your encouragement and shared enthusiasm for this story that stretched a one-day fantasy into a ten-year passion project. Now I've reached the ten year mark, and for this illustrator, ten years devoted to a free fan-made webcomic is long enough. All Horrortale pages completed by Jan 16th, 2026 will be released to the public, and the Sour Apple Studios Patreon will virtually retire. High-res pages/artwork, monthly sketches, and a few mature pieces will remain exclusive to Patreon. Beyond that, no further awards will be made to Patreon outside occasional updates, should they feel applicable.
Now for the harder news. In the time I have left, it's become clear that the comic cannot reach its ultimate ending. Despite how hard I've worked these past few months, there is simply too many pages left to draw before I can reach the final page, and it is not a part of the story I can rush. However, even if the finale will not be revealed in this time, I believe the story will reach a satisfying end. The final page will be a final community choice, and one made available to the entire Horrortale community.
There are 5-6 pages left before we reach that point.
It's impossible to say this is a certain "it's over". I've said that phrase to myself multiple times over these years, and I still find myself returning to the story again and again. But ten years feels like a good finish line to cross, even if it means this free webcomic is left with a little more to tell. Again, thank you for reading, and for your all your support. I am here ready to read any input my supporters have on this decision. Stay creative <3

Hello all dear patrons. After taking time to reflect these last few days, I realize the tone of such a major update might come across as a little casual. This is essentially an upcoming goodbye after so many years of dedication to this AU, and I'd like to talk a bit more about that.
Horrortale has changed my life. Thanks to the comic, I've reached levels of creativity and proficiency that I once had only imagined. The only reason why I've managed to accomplish so much is thanks to this incredibly dedicated, ongoing Horrortale community. I have such gratitude to each and every reader of the comic who encouraged me to continue. Of course, Toby Fox deserves ultimate gratitude for creating such rich and complex characters that lent themselves perfectly to our own imaginations. But truly, the story of Horrortale has been on my mind each and every day for nearly the past ten years. It's a true delight to tell it to all who are intrigued to hear more.
Most importantly, I really must emphasize how much I appreciate my patrons. I hold my hands out to all of you who've chosen to support this comic in such a substantial way, especially after all that's happened within the community. Thank you for understanding my growth as an artist and believing in what I do. Thank you for making Horrrotale happen.
Announcing that Jan 16th is another "indefinite hiatus" is more accurate than saying it's "the end". Horrortale does have an ultimate ending, and I really wish to tell it. But I've reached my limit, and it's beginning to feel uncomfortable keeping those outside Patreon waiting for much longer. After receiving so many messages from supporters all throughout the community, it feels time to complete one mega-submission of all pages drawn thus far. What better time to announce that than on Horrortale's tenth anniversary?
So, here's to the near-completion of a 100 page+ multi-media fanmade creation made from some geeky girl obsessed with talking skeletons. See you at the final page ^^

well to say the least sour im happy to enjoy horrortale i am sad to not see an ending to horrortale but hey im proud of you for coming this far even after everything happened really thank you as much as i wanted to see an ending where sans takes his eye back and saves everyone after having a change of heart or something (just spitballing here so dont mind that) im happy to know you alteast are done in some way i wish we could been in a different timeline where we coulda got a final good ending but hey a ending is an ending none the less and truthfully i wish i could hug you pat you on the back and tell you you did a good job cause you did and last but not elast sour i wish you a happy future whatever you choice is from this point on forwards is your stay determined and above all else remember "Even after everything its still you" be proud of that- captainbutcher1 <3

I’ve grown up with this series, and knowing that 9 years have already passed with the 10th right around the corner honestly makes me feel both incredibly sad and strangely happy at the same time. Sad to see this chapter slow to a stop, but happy that you’re choosing to step back, breathe, and look at everything you’ve built. No matter what happens next, you have changed lives — and I mean that genuinely. Even if you don’t believe it yourself, I do. You changed mine. My views, my dreams, and even the path that led me into the Undertale fandom came from your work. For that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating a story that opened the door to such an amazing, whacky, and sometimes downright absurd community. I’m glad to see Horrortale reach a somewhat conclusive end, even if a part of me wishes it didn’t have to stop. In the end, it’s your choice — and I respect it completely. This message comes from both me and my friends. I hope someday you’re able to officially finish Horrortale the way you truly envision. That may feel like a distant dream now, but it won’t stop me from believing in you every single day. Until then, keep living, keep breathing, and stay happy — or maybe stay sour. Well, Sour, I have to say thank you for making a truly memorable impact on this fandom. Honestly, considering everything, you didn’t deserve what happened because of "that." I’m proud to be a fan of yours; you created something truly beautiful. I wish I could pat you on the back and shake your hand for the amazing work you’ve done. While I am a bit sad that Horrortale won’t get a proper ending, I am genuinely happy that you are still willing to work on it. That’s all your fans can ask for. The most I can say is thank you. I thank you for asking. Everything you shared is entirely fair. Here are some more details. -Something unexpected has come up at my work. My schedule is far busier than anticipated, making my free time extremely limited. This will extend the comics' timeline beyond Horrortale's ten year milestone, which is ultimately longer than I have the time or energy to spend all my free time on. -I should backtrack a little by saying, I'm not sure if this is the comic's END exactly. It is just the end of rewards on Patreon, and it is the end to the waiting of my devoted readers in the public community. -I am touched by your words of support, and by your patience. But it pains me to charge supporters when nothing is produced, and that is very much at risk of happening starting 2026. Retiring from the comic is far more fair than advertising rewards (for a price) and not delivering them. -If any of this isn't satisfactory I fully understand, any and all are encouraged to reach me in matters of rewards and refunds for any reason.

I only arrived recently, but I’m still here to see it through and I’m excited to see it, either to the end of this current arc or eventually to the story’s ultimate conclusion. 'wait... i thought u said on the patreon, that you were gonna finish it. :( like u planned on finishing it. but since it will take longer than the 10 yr anniversary to finish, ur gonna chop it? so the story you've envisioned will never come to be? (if i'm misunderstanding it i'm sorry. but this is what it sounds like to me, reading it.) i mean you have every right to make that choice, obviously... and i hope it makes you and others satisfied in the end. but it's kind of a bummer.. as i'm sure some of your patreons like myself, joined under the assumption we were gonna see the whole story you've envisioned... uxu i would have continued to support the patreon till the true ending.. as i'm sure others would have to.

How bittersweet <\3 I understand the feeling. 10 years is a long time... An entire decade! Sometimes it is time to move on. I wish you could fulfill your full vision, but I get why that's not possible. Getting community input seems like a lovely idea, a good sendoff, yknow?? This comic has meant so much to me since I discovered it so many years ago, seeing it end will be so strange... I wish you luck with the rest of the pages, and with everything you do afterwards <3

It's heartbreaking to hear when you're so close to the ending you want (I know drawing takes a lot so when I say close I don't mean in regards to painting the pictures but the narrative if I'm interpreting this announcement correctly), but as always you have support. If you feel it's the time to retire that's understandable, especially given the you were treated so poorly four months ago, and i imagine the lack of engagement compared to then with kinder people isn't too encouraging for motivation so I get it. I'm behind you 100% thanks for all the hard work you've given us for this AU. If you in the future decide to finish the remaining pages the way you wanted then just know you have people who will still be here behind you for it. Or I wonder though, have you considered writing it out as like a fic, the ultimate ending you wanted after you post the last community choice page? Just an option to put out there for you as like an extra perhaps lol I know me personally I'm going to be forever curious about the ultimate ending, just who I am (why I struggle and suffer watching cosmic horror movies with no real explanations pffft) I'll stay subbed to your patreon, even if HT ends, I still like your art so I'll want access to the exclusives (and whatever else you decide to still share here).
