I love these game reviews. I've been looking for weeks for a game review podcast that talks about games critically like this, and I'm coming up bone dry. Most review podcasts I find just state basic descriptions that sound more like a Nintendo Directs than reviews, with no real opinions on the game's design, especially on things they don't like. It's like podcast reviewers are allergic to negativity, it's always "I think this is a pretty okay game, the side missions can be kind of boring and I wish maybe the combat was more balanced but if you like it that's okay, did I mention the art style? I'm just going to make this about the art style and general concept because I can't think of anything else I particularly liked, not that I think there's anything wrong with it, it's just not for me" for 1hr30min of runtime. And that's when they aren't just summarizing. Wish I could find more like this lol.

Ya know that D&D mention and all this tactical + game design discussion does make me wonder if Jello has read many TTRPGs. I don’t mean this in a derogatory way it just seems like something he’d have fun with (much like I do). Even the ones he may not wish to play (like Lancer which I love) or are just bad (like Cyberpunk Red which I am hating purely because it’s rulebook is terribly organized and hard to read). A lot of them do interesting things with the way combat is organized (if they’re combat focused) and how tactics are handled.

I was surprised by the Starbound mention it was a remarkably flash in the pan mediocre game in my eyes (coming from someone who for like a year thought it was amazing and was obsessed)

Fuck yeah, Valder appreciation. I haven't done the arcade mode for all the characters since I stopped when I got enough stars for Mercival. I got like 2/3 of the characters completed and have never seen the Sundering Sea. I looked up a picture and was filled with complete dread like holy shit that is a instant restart. For Wargroove 2, I haven't completed it since the launch bugs made me lose interest. Had to redo that one rat ravine level because after the rats fell in the pit the victory condition never triggered. Few levels where the challenge star wouldn't register. On the other hand, on that rat bridge level one of the bridges didn't show up so Nuru just had to watch.

This has me super intrigued. I bounced off of Wargroove 1 because the story was cute but mid, and I was getting frustrated at some of the maps ( I like strategy games but Im pretty terrible at them), so I just didn't even look at 2, especially when it seemed so unchanged. But if its this much tighter and better written, I might pop in after watching the WG1 campaign online (or finishing it since I own it and can never un-own it).

had someone be pretty toxic to me when the advance wars reboot was announced and I was all excited for it, and they kept being like "advance wars is bad and wargroove is better in every way" and that kind of put me off the series for a while because of how persistent they were in trying to squash my advance wars enthusiasm, it was kind of gross. But I did get around to trying it eventually and enjoyed it, but not enough to finish the main story. Mostly got annoyed at trying to S rank all the maps before proceeding, and you already covered why getting S ranks in the first game sucks.

While I think the jump in writing quality and tone is comparable to PoR > RD I would not say the writing is Tellius levels of good, even in WG2

Act One

Tempted to get the games now at the promise of a Tellius-esque story structure across the two games, but terrified of the risk of getting sucked into attempting to 100% the first game. Good review, spreadsheets good, too.

God i feel like such a petpeeving ass for this but Ranja is a weird spelling for what you're pronouncing there, like it's a understandable American pronounciation spelling. It's like primarily a Swedish-Finnish-Geatish name so Ronja would be the "correct" spelling. (As it is the way these languages basically universally spell it)
