Agreed. I think the trick with art that is designed to be open to interpretation is that it DOES actually need an intention behind it in the first place, whether or not that intention is the one the viewer figures out. I took an acting workshop with J. Michael Tatum once where he described acting choices this way: If your character is written to be angry in a scene, the instinct is usually to project that rage through shouting. But you don't have to. You can project that anger through a quiet laugh or an icy stare. Even a smile. Sometimes, the audience resonates more with those interesting choices than the standard ones. The actor might have intended the smile to mean "I don't think my character would be THAT angry, so they're playing it off like it's no big deal". However, a viewer might interpret that same smile as "Oh, they are about to SNAP they're so mad." The point is that intention and choices made with intention can be read by an audience in more interesting ways, even if those ways aren't necessarily "correct" or the way the actor intended. In my experience, a *lot* of work that is touted or defended as "open to interpretation" fails to have actual thought behind its choices. It's obviously not universal, but certain artists use ambiguity as a crutch. They pick evocative set pieces, props, and visuals not because they think they mean anything or there's a theme they're trying to convey, but because they like the thing's vibes. This can create shallow work that isn't fun to interpret. You get more out of deep interpretation the more an author puts in, even if their work is EXTREMELY esoteric. Also, frankly, a lot of people are just terrible at media literacy. The average viewer assumes competence on the part of the creator as a default, so any mistakes or gaps in the storytelling are filled in by the audience's mind because "Certainly the storyteller must have a plan." This is why soap operas and things like CW shows that are written week to week with no plan in mind whatsoever are still popular. If everyone recognized that they were seat-of-their-pants garbage where nothing mattered, they'd lose most of their audience.

I’m of the opinion that narrative builds themes; themes are based on what happens in a story. Stories meant to be heavily interpretable (to me) often fall flat because so little actually happens, or they're too vague, or the stuff that does happen has no rhyme or reason behind it, that the story doesn’t end up saying anything? Just my thoughts.

Frankly, I like Jello, but I don't think he's the best person at analyzing symbolism and very heavily interpretable art. He's really good at understanding and criticizing narrative but in terms of stories largely driven by themes and surreal situations I don't think it's his area of expertise.

While I do think you should see Watership Down, I don't think there's much to talk about regarding it. It's a pretty decent movie which does a good job telling the story it wants to tell. The only reason it has a reputation is because the cover has cute cartoon rabbits so moms in 1978 didn't notice it was for adults, causing kids to watch a mature film about the brutality of nature. But the film's never been about the gore and it's relatively tame to modern standards, so its reputation as a bad gore-flick is misplaced.

A little rascals esq film with two of the rocket power VAs, the voice of Shang from Mulan, and Jennifer Coolidge. Weird little fever dream of a movie that I rewatched the other day
