This is still to this day one of my favourite episodes on one piece. Dr Hirulik remains as one of the most memorable side characters in one piece to me, mainly because some of the lines he's said as he died have always stayed with me. Sometimes I find myself thinking about them from no where, especially that in his final moments he so resolutely shouted "I had a good life!" and even thanked Chopper. Something about that is so, i don't know I can't even put it into words whatever this understanding is and would probably never want to. Even the end with Chopper crying and saying he'll become the all purpose medicine, he'll cure everything even a country. man, that shit makes me bittersweetly sad but also so happy I get to watch something like that haha. The winter island osts are beautiful as well, especially the one that plays in choppers begging. I hope in my final moments I end up being the type of person that would die so resolutely and even then consider myself lucky for the life I've lived.

I think it's just a fan theory. But if you watch the scene it can very much be interpreted this way. He says "But, how can I get across?" Then turns to look at the reindeer behind him with the scene ending. It's open to interpretation but I believe it's a fan theory.

I think Dr. Hirlik went to the castle to die there since he wanted to end it himself, otherwise it would be like chopper killed him, so to not make chopper feal responsible for it.

I think it's somewhat glossed over when you're watching this the first time and you see Chopper turn into that big muscly form, but when he's in his natural form (four legged reindeer) going past his old herd, you can see how tiny he is compared to everyone else. He really is just a little kid. Everyone else it's like they're young adults and you see their backstory from when they were little kids, but Chopper's backstory is so recent. He still is that kid in his backstory

So a lot of the slapstick humor in these episodes is an ode to old MGM Tom & Jerry cartoons. Doctorine chasing Luffy/Sanji chasing Chopper is like Spike chasing Tom chasing Jerry. Luffy and Chopper taking turns jumping out of their fight to catch a breath is another. Chopper catching all the flasks, test tubes and pipettes like Tom catching dishes, etc. There's lots of little nods to Tom & Jerry and Oda is not one to do things without a reason!

yeah, first time I watched One Piece, one of my friends specifically gave me a place to go where the subs had "comrade" instead, so there was always a distinction between that and a "friend" in terms of how much depth the term had. You even hear it whenever Luffy talks about what someone is to him: "tomdoachi" = friend "nakama" = comrade It's a pity that doesn't get translated well.

The way Dr. Hiriluk was about to die in a few days from an incurable disease, then ate a deadly mushroom that would kill him before the day was over, then was about to be shot to death by hundreds of guards, but right before that was finally blown to pieces in a giant explosion 😭 Oda said he is not making it out of this backstory!

It always bothers me when the character says Nakama and the CC says "friend". Nakama means a lot of things but in this case it means "crew". The crew of the pirates ship. Yea sure they are friends at the same time but calling it "friend" makes everything kinda cheep IMO.
