I think it's the "main character" aspect you mentioned combined with the way she delivers some of her lines. Even if she's in the right, it just isn't pleasant to listen to. That being said, I like her more and like Walt less on my second watch lol.

She's petty and sometimes rude, but it's totally understandable considering what she's going through. As for who's side to take, I think it's pretty clear that Walt is in the wrong far more than she is. The smoking thing is the only significant thing she's done and she shows remorse.

they did a good job of making skylar a hateable character even though most of the things she does are completely reasonable. It’s a side effect of rooting for walt, he does terrible things and you justify them until you don’t like him anymore

100% makes no sense. People confuse "main character" with "good guy" here badly. Walt is the villian. The only thing I didn't like about Skylar on my first watch was her reaction to finding out. But I identify with doing whatever it takes to take care of your family. Not that I would cook meth 😂 but the sentiment. But even then, on the second watch it didn't bother me as much. It's wild how disliked she is for being......right. I think it says more about the people that hate her if you know what I mean.

Yea absolutely, there’s zero benefit to Skylar’s actions! I’m just saying. The drug world is dangerous. The risk outweighs the reward. His first week in the life he killed 2 people lol. Family’s are often collateral in these situations as well. What he’s doing is extremely dangerous. It really shouldn’t be downplayed imo. I love his character 100% but he’s a pos lol 😅 Ik it’s up for interpretation but I really don’t think it’s some subconscious thing to get back at Walt. She’s probably a previous smoker and addiction is real. A lot of people smoke because of stress. She’s being lied to every single day by her husband. She’s having an unexpected baby at a later age, her husband has cancer and they are struggling financially. I think that’s enough stressors to get someone to be stupid and smoke, if that’s something they’ve done before. It’s absolutely dangerous and not ok, but to downplay the danger they are in every day because of walts actions is a bit naive imo. And his decision to do this I will never think is noble. He’s prideful as fuck. If it was just about his family he would have swallowed his pride and accepted the money and job from Elliot and Gretchen.

But at least Walt is putting them in danger for some benefit, to protect them and set them up for a comfortable life. Skyler has no goal by her smoking other than short term pleasure and possibly also subconsciously to harm walt's child to get back at him for what he put her through.

I’m NOT defending Skyler smoking. But I do appreciate how real this show is. Every character has flaws. And she obviously went to smoking because she under extreme stress. But as far as the discussion at the end like saying what she did was more dangerous to the baby than what Walt does. This is not strictly true. Tuco literally knew where they lived for example and he was crazy. He invited that danger into their lives by his choices. At best he can be arrested and she’s a single broke mother at 40 and at worst they can be legit murdered. Walt is putting every single one of them at risk every single day. Way more so than 3 cigarettes if we are being fr!

Ok I did the drug math to save yall the misery: The total for the pound is 32k, 16k each for Jessie and Walt. Assuming each of the 3 mules get ~1 ounce per night, they sell the pound in 5 days, netting Walt and Jessie 3.2k/day or 22.4k/week each. This is compared to 5k/day each from Tuco or 35k/week So if Walt keeps cooking without scaling operations he and Jessie will each earn $1.15 million/year.

I remember in an interview Vince Gilligan was talking about how the hate Skyler got really bothered him. There seems to be a disconnect between how he intended to write her character and how people received it. I can’t decide if that’s his fault or the fault of the audience.
