I've had to live in some awful environments as a kid and adult. One of the worst (not the worst though lol) was probably my mom's paranoid schizophrenic boyfriend, who was convinced my mom was hiding some other guy inside the walls or their bed. He broke holes in the walls and cut open the bed, so we called 911 to get him out. It was sad because he wasn't a terrible person, but he refused to get the help he needed. Also, the foster care and adoption system in the US is super flawed, so even if your parents/guardians lose custody of you, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll end up in a good environment.
