A lot of his humor is a coping mechanism for the trauma he experiences in his line of work which is why his humor is often so dark. This is explored a lot throughout the show. A big theme of Breaking Bad (and Better Call Saul for that matter) is the different masks we wear to hide parts of ourselves or present ourselves in a certain light.

This is only the very surface level of hank’s character, yes he has an ego and he’s extremely confident in himself and his ability to do his job as he should be as a DEA agent. This may seem like an annoying character trait to some people but I actually think the confidence he has in himself and his coworkers is one of his better qualities. Throughout the show you also see hank being serious and dropping the “act” when his family and friends are involved. Also hank just has very dark humor, I don’t think half the time he says stuff he even realizes that it’s offensive.

Literally that first fucking episode, during WALTS BDAY, he’s like “turn on the TV!!” and “oh look at meee on tv, I’m so cool” making jokes at Walts expense so everyone can laugh. I HATE those kinds of “friends” who always make fun of you when others are there so they can be seen as “funny” but are nice to you when you’re alone. That’s the vibe he gives off 😒 Once u start picking up on those traits, its hard to go back to liking him 😭 he just becomes straight up insufferable

Unpopular opinion: i think Hank is annoying af. I really liked him the first watch and i still love the “character concept” of him being DEA and Walts BIL, but after a few rewatches ive realised he’s such a cringelord wannabe “macho”/trying way too hard to be funny often at the cost of others to make himself look better and unnecessarily assholey w all those lowkey and highkey racist jokes. That dry lil forced fake hehehehe laugh of his every time just pisses me off now 😂🥲🥲

This isn't most people's favorite episode, and there are certainly a ton of others in this series that are at or above this level so it's not for lack of quality, but this is my personal favorite. I just love that moment of realization for Walt where he realizes he no longer has a choice to play or not, the devastation at the plate and the piece missing. The tie-in to their calculations for the human breakdown and how a percentage is unaccounted for...the soul? A missing piece? Bryan Cranston as White is just the best acting I can remember.
