I really love Skypiea, it's conclusion and how everything made sense at the end. But honestly I CAN'T WAIT for you to finish this arc and begin the next one... The arc following Skypiea is my favorite arc of One Piece so far and I'm sure it will stay in my top 3. It has emotion, epic moments, unexpected ones too... and I believe it marked history in the One Piece journey. I'm really excited for what's next !!!

Skypiea is one of my favourite arcs and apparently that is a very polarizing take in the OP community since there's a whole group of people who completely skip it 😭. To me, this arc captures the spirit of adventure in OP,,,it feels a lot like your textbook pirate story with exploring a new island that has its own custom and cultures, investigating legends, looking for lost treasures etc. It's an arc that feels quite isolated from the rest of the story (hindsight goes crazy on it tho), but it's still some great storytelling and I absolutely LOVE its conclusion. Having said all that, I can't wait for y'all to enter the next big arc after it LOL. That arc feels like the culmination of Oda's improvement in his writing up until that point and he absolutely delivers. For now tho, enjoy Skypiea (also will you be watching the G8 arc after it? Ik its filler but the episodes have a lot of charm to them I always suggest anime watchers who skip filler to watch it!)

I’m not a fan cause I feel like some of the filler adds to the characters and I love all the gag moments. But they are right about it not being loyal to the manga. Toei was always fighting to not be too ahead of the manga. Thus a lot of filler.

Oh of course. All the long shows back then stretched content in the actual episodes particularly the big 3. One piece kinda the poster boy tho. A “slow” Naruto episode would adapt ~1 chapter but they were usually more. Where’s one piece has stretch’s where it’s 1 or less per episode for an arcs duration. Everyone hates on filler arcs and they are obviously used to make money but it was useful to the long ongoing shows and if ur a massive fan just offers more content or otherwise easy to skip. The other option is hiatus like one piece is currently on which definitelyy has its benefits

Aniamtion changes can happen at any time. Around the time this episode aired, other anime look so much better than this, the improvement in animation already existed but Toei decided to evolve again at this point. Just like how episode 918+ had such a clear upgrade from 917

One of the things i love about skypiea the most is the adventure aspect of discovering and exploring the sky island. Its cool because all previous islands are things we intuitively know from our own world but this arc feels like the first true exploration for the viewer.

Not really, there was pretty much always a week between each episode. But after each major arc they traditionally try to upgrade somehow or get a new director/style on it. So each big arc feels a lil different animation/quality wise

It has nothing to do with attention span. That's just one of the downside of being very long continuous anime. When anime gets closer to the source material they either take a break and let the source material get ahead again (lost of seasonal anime), make lots of filler (such as in og Naruto and Bleach), or slow down the pacing (One Piece). OG Naruto had a filler percentage of 41% and bleach ~45&. One Piece has a filler percentage of 9% but has bad pacing especially arcs that were starting to catch up to the source material. That's why pacing in one piece is so slow because instead of taking a break or making filler they just drag out as much as they can to prevent from catching up to the source material. It has nothing to do with attention spans its just factual that a lot of the one piece anime is very poorly paced. Seasonal anime which are usually well paced adapt 2-3 chapters an episode compared to One Piece's 0.5 so you'll be getting 4-6 times source content from a seasonal anime than from a one piece episode. Only recently has it changed with one piece taking a 6 month break this doesn't just allow for better production of the anime and allow the manga to get ahead again but may also result in better pacing of the anime when it returns.

Dressrosa was not okay at time and neither was wano. Manga only readers are confused when you say fishman island wasnt good and punk hazard was boring. Post time skip pre wano animation revamp is one pieces low point and theres nothing wrong with admitting its faults, after all its only the anime and not the cannon story

Naruto and one piece anime’s differ a lot on how they deal/dealed with not catching up to the manga. Naruto usually went with fillers that’s why u are allowed to skip so many episodes but one piece usually doesn’t take the filler route and instead opt to slow the pace wayyy down. Not even full chapters are always adapted where it’s usual to do like 3,4,5 or even more chapters a single episode in new anime’s. So u can’t exactly “skip” the extra fluff the anime adds to not catch the manga as easy as when it’s full filler episodes. Thats why one pace is just a big thing. So short answer the amount of filler is definitely way worse is Naruto but it is way easier to skip and doesn’t impact the actual pace of the show as much

Bro it has nothing to do with attention span, One Piece's later arcs are just factually poorly paced if you compare the amount of chapters being adapted per episode. The average chapter to episode ratio for the average anime is 2-3:1 depending on what's being adapted. But One Piece's worst arc in terms of pacing (of course anime only) has some episodes that have a chapter to episode ratio of 0.5:1 which is unheard of. Edit: I would also like to mention that the arc mentioned before has more episodes than chapters with a ratio of 0.86:1

End of jaya to beginning of Skypiea is an insane run with info dump of Jaya and constant new and trippy stuff coming in in Skypiea. Also, first arc of One Piece is called Romance Dawn. It is a prevalent theme in One Piece. Bug and beetle collecting is a big thing in Japan afaik and it is what inspired Pokemon

All one pace does is splice, cut, edit music placement and does their own translations. So nothing else like animation or visual quality changes. Everything you see is how it looked when it aired. The translations aren’t that great to be honest.

Im always an original only person and the original One Piece for me is what Oda writes, not some creations from Toei writers. So I regard One Pace as more close to the original one especially for arcs with a lot of nonsense fillers. The critism of cut of emotional music may be valid but I haven't seen one in Skypiea or DR, maybe other arcs. I watched One Piece in the original form and rewatched Skypiea and DR with One Pace I think nothing important got cut.

I feel you Carter, my love for watching original content led me to watch the entire series OG my first time, but after watching One Pace as well, I can assure you that you're not missing anything worthwhile in Skypiea. There are a handful of arcs that One Pace improves upon, and this is one of them. Having seen both, I prefer the One Pace version. And yeah, the One Piece community often conflates "lore" and "world-building", and 151 is 99% the latter. The lore is for later, but there are hints everywhere.

Idk the official reason, but my head canon for the different languages is just world building, makes it feel more real when you are following world traveling pirates and they encounter of languages, even if they are mostly used for attack names lol

In my experience the shorter the arc the better it tends to be. Obviously there is a limit, but think about animes that only run 25-150 episodes. tend to be more diamonds in that gap than the crazy long ones. I'm sure there are multiple factors, but the pacing feels better. not cause its not long, but because when its short they don't waste time on filler. That's my theory at least. I noticed the trend after building my animelist for awhile.

Brig asked if somehow no one has noticed the giant knock up stream and thought they could get to the sky, but Bellamy actually mentioned it said that people believe the sky island was a myth the people came up with when they saw ships fall from the sky that were probably wrecked on the ocean floor and then shot into the sky by the knock up stream.
