“Eren is not a Yeagerist” THIS, THANK YOU. Eren is a symbol and a concept to the Yeagerists. It reminds me of what Kruger says about the Founder Ymir: “Anyone can be a god or a devil, it just takes people to believe it.” It doesn’t matter what or who he actually is, Eren is a figure people can channel their fear and anger into and ultimately someone they can “mythologize” in order to be who they need him to be. It’s a pretty classic representation of how fascist ideologies take root, but that’s a way bigger discussion 😅

It was immediately clear to me that the way Eren chooses to hurt his friends, but particularly Mikasa—by calling her a slave and saying he hates her—is classic projection. He’s very clearly talking about himself, and I think there’s plenty of evidence to support that at this point in the story without him having to clearly state it. The fact that he can’t accept she might love him “without a reason” and not by her own free will is a reflection of his own self loathing and feelings of helplessness being trapped by his own ideals. It’s incredibly sad obviously but I think this story is ultimately a cautionary tale in that regard. Mikasa represents how love in the realest sense doesn’t imply servitude or enslavement, and Eren represents the destructiveness and suffering that comes with believing it does.

I've thought about this too. Sterilization makes more sense when you're thinking about it on an individual level; but they are technically euthanizing the species/race. To euthanize is to relieve an animal of suffering by peaceful death. Zeke pretty much sees himself as putting the Eldians out of their misery, so I think euthanasia works

Especially seeing general magath being warmer towards the elidans it kind of gives the viewers hope for the side of the marlyians and then seeing Eren turn really cold to everyone around him. It's very interesting how Zeke's upbringing contrasts with Eren's, and how they end up with completely different outlooks. While Zeke was growing up, his parents manipulated him to achieve their goals of escaping Eldian oppression and restoring the Eldian Empire (or at least what they thought they knew of it). They didn't spend the time they should have with him as parents, and it resulted in Zeke having to make a difficult choice. Meanwhile, Eren didn't have any of this manipulation, and while under oppression from another source (at least from the island's perspective), he was determined to fight from a young age. Interestingly, Eren didn't have a similar opposing viewpoint like that of Marleyan history for Zeke. Because of this, Eren didn't even know who the "true enemy" was until late in S3. There are some interesting and controversial similarities between them that I won't delve into yet, even though you guys have finished.

I've always thought Yelena was the most archetypal character in the show. Now that I've seen Eve, maybe her character isn't as unrealistic after all. Seeing Big Monke talk back in season 2 just permanently altered Eve's brain chemistry, I guess.

I also noticed Zeke didn't want to shake Erens hand which would have caused him to see some memories and I'm wondering what Zeke doesn't want him to see. I did feel sympathy for Zeke because he had such a sad childhood. I kind of feel like his solution to the problem isn't the right one and that he was manipulated by more than just his parents. I hope Levi isn't dead. I feel like if Hange jumped in the river with him he must be alive. I can't wait to watch the next batch.

The scene in 4x15 where Grisha yells at Zeke at the dinner table is slightly longer in the manga and ends on a quite different tone. Where the scene ends in the episode and we get the mid-card, instead in the original scene Zeke has a reply for his dad He says “Dad…grandpa said if you just hadn’t gone outside the walls…” which stops Grisha in his tracks. He sits back down, gets real quiet and we only see the back of his head as he replies “What did I do wrong? I just wanted to see the airship.”
