The cycle of hatred and destiny/defying destiny is the theme of the show. If you guys recall everything Madara was saying about the Uchiha and Senju as well as touching upon the idea of the shinobi world being extremely flawed from the very first arc in the show, it's more or less that. It's now come into center view with Naruto and Sasuke respectively being this generation's recurring cycle, of course with outside influences pushing things along that route like Madara but still. In a way the story of the shinobi world can be represented through Naruto and Sasuke's relationship, so you could say that both of your guesses are right lol

Kakashi wouldn't have had to die for Naruto to be Hokage. Kakashi could just choose to step down. Sarutobi stepped down and Minato became the Hokage, but he reprised his role after Minato died.

As far as main plot, Naruto x Sasuke are indeed the main plot. It’s really about rising above hatred or finding ways to. At least that’s what I’ve gathered. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve mostly seen Sasuke through Naruto’s eyes. Since Naruto never doubted that he’d get him to change or abandon his revenge, I also believed it would happen. That’s why when he said “Sasuke is still Sasuke,” I understood it to mean that while he’s blinded by murderous intent right now, deep down, he’s still just Sasuke. And when Madara was trying to pull Sasuke back and Sasuke chose to wait a little longer in order to hear what Naruto had to say, for me that was a strangely positive step. I believe Sasuke is even more intent on killing Naruto now because he’s the only person alive right now, who can still shake him. Not many people are as stubborn as Naruto and Sasuke are about what they’re looking to do with each other, so I guess that’s why they end up talking to each other in circles. And I just have to say, Danzo is a real piece of shxt. I just had to add that because of Jack’s comment about his redeeming qualities. Making a 13 year old kill his own clan with children and elders and non-fighters included just makes him the scum of the earth. Then transplanting his people’s eyes into his own arm?! Real piece of shxt. The fact that he was actually upset that Itachi couldn’t kill his own little brother just makes me detest him more.

Sorry I haven’t been caught up with this reaction but plan to soon. Are you guys watching all 500 episodes or have you guys cut out filler episodes? If the filler has been cut than you guys are technically almost done with the show. If I remember correctly, canon events are about 300 episodes. I know the fillers are primarily for character development which is important imo, so I don’t mind rewatching it. Just wondering how you guys are going about. I’m slacking.

36:16 Not really, Kakashi doesn't have to die for Naruto to be the Hokage. Some people have become Hokage while the previous Hokage is still alive. It just means that they retire/not active as Hokage anymore. The first Hokage was still alive when the second Hokage was chosen, Hiruzen was still alive when Minato was Hokage and he took over as Hokage again when Minato died. Danzo and Kakashi were selected as Hokage while Tsunade was out of commission.
