He's so complicated as a character too and we've seen many times that he prefers others not knowing how much he cares, but what I always think is that he's the friend Izuku NEEDS. Also as someone pointed out already, this was the first time Bakugou was shown to actually wear his tie in the manga. The boy is so serious about how worried he is, and he’s grown up so much while still being authentically and unabashedly himself. He’s such a king. And as incredible as this arc is, this is Deku at his lowest—terrified for his loved ones, exhausted, alone. The vestiges realize that the manifestation of their quirks and expectations have not only increased the burden Deku feels he has to carry, but also given him the abilities to push nu self even harder to his own detriment. He just really doesn’t think about himself. He’s also my king, but he needs Bakugou to shout some sense at him.

Actually these are all things he was already capable of doing (not being used out of caution, lack of practice, not necessary) and being pushed into a corner in these dire situations caused him to grow and also work with what he had in his arsenal. You don't fight a fight with all your cards on the table or without conserving energy. The whole essence of Plus Ultra is going beyond what you thought was your limit/ the height of your capabilities. I'm curious to find out what other growing hero you might suggest was written better (enlighten me) in relation to what you said. Ofc it seems like he gains new skills every time he gets into a fight. He's a rookie hero that is basically training IN the field and as he encounters new villains. And this is all aside from the innovative personality that Deku has.

That’s why he was crying after Shigaraki took his arms—he couldn’t use his quirk anymore to bring the boss back.

Class 1A's devotion to Izuku is so on brand for them. I love how much Izuku has left his mark on everyone. Also, this was pointed out by fans before but usually Katsuki completely forgoes his tie and wears his uniform as sloppily as he can but in this scene where Class 1A confronts Endeavour, he's wearing his uniform as perfectly as it can be and I think that really shows how serious he is about this whole affair. I love him so much Anyways, I can't wait for the next episode. It's my favourite of the whole season! And for good reason, though it's pretty easy to guess why (I just think Class 1A and Izuku have some of the best friendships ever, esp Katsuki and Izuku's complicated but mutually reciprocated relationship)

Just remembered Izuku tells All Might "You don't need to worry about me anymore" when he walks away from him in Ep 22 and I'm not okay because that's part of his hero philosophy too. In S4 Ep 2, Mirio asks him what kind of hero he wants to be. He contemplates it for a while after almost blurting out his default answer (to save people with a smile aka be like All Might), but then he says something along the lines of "I want to be strong enough that people don't ever have to worry about me. I want to be the greatest hero." At the time, his mother's memory of crying over his constant injuries and near-death situations fueled that answer mainly. But until now, he still hold on to that philosophy in addition to the one about saving whoever needs saving. But as established previously, Izuku is terrible at asking for help. His inability to willingly put others in danger for his sake makes it so that he tries to do everything himself, like he tried to do against Shigaraki in the war when no one there could keep up except him. It's what Katsuki told him in mid-air after taking a hit for him and getting pierced by All For One. But even then, he still doesn't completely register that, esp when he's been looking all over the place for All For One and Shigaraki, taking out villains left and right and on top of that being exhausted, isolated, lonely and with All For One's words haunting him. He's in desperate need of help at this moment, because sooner or later if he continues down this lonely path, he'll get kidnapped eventually and have his quirk stolen. When Katsuki appears after that long sequence of depression and fear (he does indeed look scary and not like a hero at all, he's not even smiling when he says "In order for everyone to smile again"), it's a literal breath of fresh air. The title card "friends" being displayed right over his head is yet another symbolic moment because Katsuki is the one person who you'd never think of as Izuku's friend. Rival, sure. Childhood friends (implying their friendship is a thing of the past), sure. But friend? Not so much. But when you think about it, despite all his shortcomings and rough words, Katsuki IS a friend. He's the metaphorical representative of Class 1A's friendship with Izuku, because he encompasses their understanding of him, the competitiveness they feel directed towards him, and the kindness they possess that will get him out of this shithole he's in now. He may not be Izuku's best or even a good friend, but his role in pushing Izuku to newer heights as a hero and as a person has always been there, as a foundation of Izuku's obsession with heroes and being a hero. The amount of chills I got when he showed up was insane.

All For One has always had an annoying tendency to use and twist All Might's words and catchphrases for his own agenda. Like the time he told Shigaraki in S3 when he rescued him from being captured by the heroes who came to ambush them and save Katsuki: "I'm here for you." or when he was holding All Might back from saving Katsuki from being taken away by the League of Villains: "I won't let that happen. Because I am here!" It's always been such a disgusting method to spite All Might. But "Next, it's your turn." is the vilest one yet. He used the words that All Might said at the end of their fight in S3 to emphasise Izuku's burden and role as his successor and twisted its sacred meaning into one that emphasises a cruel promise that Izuku is to be the next person he cuts down. Also, All Might wanting to tell Izuku the words he couldn't afford to listen to when he was in possession of One For All and carried that same burden but falling to the ground always hurts me so bad. As much as he knows he passed this fate onto Izuku and now has no capability whatsoever to stop him from doing his duty as his successor, seeing his disciple so ragged and tired after being hunted down by multiple villains must make him feel so guilty. I pointed this out at the end of S5 when he said "You don't look back at me anymore." which is also brought up in his memories here, but it still HURTS to think about how Izuku no longer needs his help necessarily to be the hero he's trying to live up to. I literally tear up every time.

Seeing Izuku's descent into this darker, more mature, more ruthlessly calm persona has always given me mixed feelings. On one hand, I dearly miss his silly side and perpetual smile (the genuine one) and sometimes even fear that he might just snap under the pressure and lose control. On the other hand, I love how serious he is when he's being a hero, because he looks cool, sounds cool, moves great and intimidates villains. But I'll never quite get over how different he is from the start of the series, or heck even just compared to S4. The growth is evident, but so is the gradual loss of his innocence.

Lady Nagant's appearance, introduction, story and subsequent effect on the audience reminds me so much of Kita Shinsuke from Haikyuu. When he was first introduced as Captain of the Inarizaki team at Nationals in S4, he took up all of 1 episode before worming his way into people's hearts. They managed to put so much into so little words and time, and it never fails to amaze me how human they made him despite being an opponent the Karasuno boys have to defeat. And they literally do the same with Lady Nagant here. Her motivations, backstory and reason for veering off the path of a "hero" were expertly written into the scenes mid-fight. We can see WHY and HOW she came to be who she is now, and there's so much truth in what she's saying that you can't help but agree with her point of view. Because of the all killings she was ordered to carry out, she become tired of the manipulation and gaslighting the Hero Safety Commission used to wield her as a weapon in information and power warfare. Getting rid of potential troublemakers before they even emerge as threats is not abiding by the law. It is simply hiding the ugliness of superhuman society. It's one thing to confront issues caused by groups whose sole aim is to maim and massacre for fun, but killing a group of people (including shady heroes) without even taking the time to understand their motivations is pretty much just enforcing a mindset of "heroes are infallible and can do no wrong". It might serve society well for a while, as seen from the 40 years of peace that held up because of All Might and his "infallibility" in the eyes of the public, but once the problematic underbelly of society overruns its confines (like the rise of Shigaraki and the League of Villains after All Might's retirement), then the public has no way of coming to terms with the fact that heroes might not be the same "can do no wrong, always wins" people they think they are. It's why the reveal of Endeavour being abusive and producing Dabi the villain and Hawks' father being a murderer made such a big deal. Because these heroes were presented in a light that worships their achievements, their sacrifices, their contributions to society, without addressing the fact that they're not perfect. So when these heroes have not-so-pretty sides of them revealed, everyone who believed in their goodness just starts doubting the trust they used to put in them, whether or not they had control over those sides or not, like Hawks' father. Like Lady Nagant said, they were in a way kind of brainwashing people to think that heroes are ONLY good, when that's not true. It's also why Izuku's motivations are so impt in the story, particularly as he learns there is more to both the heroes and villains besides good and evil. Izuku is willing to understand, to learn, to comprehend and empathise with those who might do bad things but have valid reasons behind their actions. He doesn't condemn people blindly like the Hero Safety Commission does, and that's what made Lady Nagant change her mind.

I don’t think it’s because All Might is too nice to stop Deku. It’s just he doesn’t think he has a right to stop Deku because it would be hypocritical of him. They both have highly self sacrificing personalities and think the lives of others are more important than their own. They push themselves until they can’t anymore. On the other hand, Bakugo has a higher sense of self worth. He still puts himself out there to save people, but not as recklessly as Deku or All Might. Bakugo understands that he needs to take care of himself before he can take care of others

Deku finally coming into his own. So much more enjoyable to watch now that he is competent and his first move isn't "blow up the enemy (and my arm)". That's just my opinion. It took 5 seasons and 10 episodes for him to unlock his second quirk and we are finally getting to see the fruits of his training and his battle iq. I still wish Horikoshi had put a time jump in here, I think we kind of conveniently ignore the strongest quirk in a 13 year olds body and the supposed reprocussions of that. That being said, so much other stuff is done well, that was can overlook that. Just like all other Shounen, it's pretty much a story of child soldiers, but it has so much heart and a nice sense of idealism. I understand it's like their favorite show, so criticism isn't taken well, but the show is top tier compared to the other new gen Shounens

Dark knight deku is my favorite part of the series so far (watching along for the first time). Every superhero has this arc, and I think they have to at some point. It's brutal but realistic. I know he will overcome this, but I hope some of that confidence, persistence, and maturity stays.

The reason why Lady Nagant isn't a Nomu because she has multiple quirks is because Nomu's have at least more than 5 quirks (and most of them lose intelligence from it). The only negative side effect she gets for having another quirk is having her lifespan shortened. I wouldn't say it halved her lifespan but it probably took away at least more than a decade away from her.

Some people wished that this specific vibe of Midoriya being on his own had been a larger part of the show, and I feel like that train of thought misses the point of the entire series - having One Person be the only real obstacle between society and collapse is not the way ! That path is why All Might became Small Might, and why Deku is one small puff of wind away from collapsing. The burden of looking after others and confronting tough issues and righting wrong isn’t supposed to be one person’s responsibility - that falls to EVERYONE. For that reason, I love this moment when Class 1-A comes to find Midoriya - it’s an individual choice for each of them, but a collective effort, and that’s the way we should be too, in our own individual ways. Not everyone can do everything and no one should have to, either. When we each show up ready to work and support each other, the burden of societal function and community/cooperation lightens. It’s a simple idea, but complicated when applied, and I feel like this story portrays that fairly well.

When it comes to handling multiple quirks I do think Deku is one of the only people we know capable of handling that many so orderly. Even when we look at All for One, the sky is literally the limit when it comes to all of the quirk combos he could do, and how versatile he could be. But in his fight with All Might, we see him simply become a brawler type and stockpile a bunch of quirks into his arm for one powerful blow. Meanwhile, Deku is taking a somewhat simple quirk like Blackwhip, and turned it into one of the most versatile abilities in the show. I love when we see him bracing his own broken arm with it!

It’s pretty messed up that they just took a lot of these young children with good quirks who wanted to be heroes and just turned them into disillusioned killers. They didn’t even learn their lesson when it backfired and just started recruiting at a younger age. The Commission basically did the same thing to Lady Nagant and Hawks that All for One did to Shigaraki. Like, it’s all really similar. I loved Lady Nagant's character, she deserved better

I've said before I'll say it again, love bakugo's growth! I love seeing the whole class show up for deku. He's pushing himself way too hard. You can just tell how everyone's friendship with each other has grown by going to school together, having to constantly fight villains together etc.

The Safety Commission is just like, "You suspect them of crime? Murder. You think they'll commit a crime later? Murder. They have a quirk that's powerful but won't join us? Murder. Heroes doing dirty work but not dirty work for us? Murder." They pick up these hopeful kids and train them to be assassins. And whenever it looks like they'll get caught doing something wrong, they give out incorrect information. "We promise, none of the student heroes were involved in the war. None of them even participated. Oh, that Nagant lady killed one of her allies. The Comission people who died were completely unrelated. We could never do anything wrong." Like Shigaraki said, this society covers up those who are hurting and just gets rid of them or ignores them instead of trying to get them help. It's why he was created. This society of heroes gives birth to villains.

We've always known Deku to be selfless in every sense but it's always been a double-edged sword of his personality. He will always put himself at risk regardless of his mental and physical wellbeing, it's like Bakugo said in episode 9 of this season 'At the root of it he doesn't think of himself.' and neither did All Might until it got to the worst case scenario and he lost his stomach because of it (and due to AFO too ofc lol). At the heart of it they're both true heroes wanting to save as many people as possible but it shouldn't have to be about having a burden or sacrificing your life for others, the difference between Deku and All Might now is that he has his friends who want to help him, he isn't alone. I need my son to smile again!! Also love the Lady Nagant funko pop :)

I love Deku because he feels so real. He’s carrying all that pressure and his own doubts. He’s not the strongest mentally, but he keeps trying. He wanted to be like All Might, but deep down he knows he can’t handle it all on his own.

Midoriya in this arc really has the weight of the world in his two small shoulders and that’s why these next couple eps are my favs. You can really see the shift from the symbol of peace to a more group/teamwork based hero era coming. And I don’t want to say All Might was wrong about the symbol of peace because it WAS very very effective and broke grounds in ways never seen before (something only he could do) but this renaissance of togetherness (they don’t rlly have a choice) is rlly beautiful to see and directly works against what Midoriya is feeling right now.

Ay lesgoooo!!! Deku at this point is very strong and I've seen other reactors point out when they first watched ep 22 that 1A shouldn't be able to match him. However Deku is at his absolute limit as he's exhausted both physically and mentally, not to mention that they're also his friends who can probably talk him down

I feel like All Might has become so much more timid because he feels a sense of shame for not being a the symbol of peace, a hero who never failed to save anyone he set out to. His mental state must be all over the place. From successfully carrying the whole country on your shoulders to just watching from the sidelines. And not only do you have to watch everything you built crumble in front of you, you have to walk around feeling like it’s your fault for not being able to keep it upright anymore.

I love that you guys have always appreciated Deku, because it’s so weird to me that the arc where he’s the most broken is where a lot of people suddenly realized that he’s a good character. He hasn’t changed, this is the same kid who’s always carried other people’s burdens, the support systems just got stripped away. The vigilante look is a symptom of that. The shredded gear, the hollow eyes, the blood, those just make his core more visible. Loving the darker, grittier tone is totally valid (I love this arc too), but calling him a crybaby for six seasons and only praising him when he’s sleep-deprived, malnourished, and bleeding says more about people’s edgelord bias than about the writing. MHA has never been a kids’ show. It’s about empathy and what heroism costs, and this stretch just drags those themes into the rain. You can love the realism here without wishing permanent misery on him. Growth shouldn’t require the hero to stay broken forever.

Every time they bring back the gray area of this universe it always brings me back to the lecture the police chief gave to deku, todoroki, and ida during the stain arc. It’s funny how deku believing that people like Shigaraki and nagant can be saved is effectively removing that line between heroes and villains that is always trying to be defined. Even the actions of the characters and where they fit on that line can be put into this context. Just because it worked out, does it mean it was ok for nagant to do the dirty work she did as a “hero”? If they aren’t, is she villain? If the answer is neither, then is it right for her and others like her to be judged by the ideology of a hero society that’s only in black and white, something like if your good acts outway your bad, then your a hero? Only when she was judged by someone like deku, was an understanding found, and her true colors came to fruition.

I think other people have said similar things but S7 ep 5-11 would be a perfect binge! Regardless of which episodes you do end up binging I am selfishly hoping that they end a watch with ep 11 cuz I think it deserves its own discussion/outro. Without getting into spoiler territory I think part of the impact is just kinda having to sit with the information so I'm hoping it doesn't end up in the middle of a binge.
