They already explained that if someone died, their shadow dies too, becuase they are basically connected souls even if separated . That’s why Moria and his people never kill any of their shadowless victims and let them leave on their boats if they’d like to, otherwise Moria loses the shadow he gains.

Moria at this point has taken a heavy beating luffy, lost his greatest asset in Oars and his human subordinates, he is now cornered by luffy & the strawhats who are still capable of fighting, he is going to lose. Luffy alone is probably enough to beat him, that’s why Zoro said they have already won. The only way Moria can win now is to have his threats burn in the sunlight, so he has employed shadow Asgard to buy the time for that to happen.

If you remember Lola and others said before feeding Luffy with shadows that anyone among them has lost their senses after consuming few shadows. That feet needs a lot of will power to utilize the shadows power. That is why they ask Luffy after hundred shadows, whether he is still there and Luffy says I am still me or something like that. That means he uses the power shadows provide for his benefit and not lost to their power. In case of Moria, to prove that he is a lot more powerful than Luffy he consumes all the shadows in TB instead of taking as much needed to boost his strength. Also he is pissed off at that the government doesn't have confidence in his strength as per Kuma's words. That overconfidence cost him his victory.

Gecko Moria is an old man that lost to Kaido in the New World, lost his whole crew and basicly gave up. He's a weak minded quitter and that's the base on his whole loss of control of the shadows, he doesn't have the willpower to control them. A salty loser that got fat and lazy after escaping with his life back to the easier half of the Grand Line. He's a villain at this point to show what could happen if you're not strong enough to compete in the New World.

even tho gecko moria is one of the most annoying characters in the show he’s a pretty well written character/villain. i think it’s obvious he’s not in his prime anymore but he was once strong enough to have fought against kaido. what really destroyed him was the death of his crew. becoming consumed by his grief and a lot of delusion in order to cope is what led to his self-destruction basically

also admirals > warlords in almost all instances. being a Warlord just means you are useful as a pirate to the gov it does not inherently imply a certain level of strength. being an admiral requires you to be one of the strongest marines being a warlord does not inherently require you to be one of the strongest pirates. in fact many of the strongest arent warlords because their strength threatens the gov (like the four emperors)

its Interesting how kaido affected moria. He gets a lot of clout within the OP world for surviving his encounter with kaido, but that encounter is what permanently scars Moria and makes him a weaker warlord. before the encounter he was a promising rookie much like luffy is but after having his whole crew destroyed by kaido he loses ambition and confidence. his lazy reliance on the power of others is what allows him to be no diffed by luffy who still has that ambition Moria loss. thats why he gets packed up as soon as he has to rely on his own power

Usopp has full confidence in Luffy in that he'll save the day, he was just saying that Luffy should find another way to defeat Moria without using gear 2, a technique that causes considerable amount of damage to him. In fact I believe that every crew member has an unyielding amount of loyalty and belief in Luffy winning, because they all were once in that situation where they doubted his resolve and were proven wrong. And they have seen this happen to others time and time again of Luffy overcoming such overwhelming odds and accomplishing his goal each arc, they no longer question his ability, will or love for his crew mates. Putting their complete trust and faith in him. Which is why they let him have his 1v1s, out of respect and belief. Luffy's will to protect his crew is also so strong that he would be willing to do whatever it takes to protect them, even if it means risking his own life. So when Usopp expresses concern or any other crew member for that matter, it’s not to doubt Luffy’s strength, but of fear for his well being.

Yeah I said it in the last video, but Moria is a former-pro version of a pirate. He made a run in the new world and got backed the fuck up by Kaido. He then slummed it in the grand line being a warlord. He's the grand line version of Arlong. Big fish in a small pond because he tried going to a bigger pond and got his shit pushed in.

It is so so incredibly awesome to see the discussion at the end of this drop resemble fragments of conversations that One Piece fans still have in present day... there is so much nuance to the power system and hierarchy of strength that yall are only just starting to get exposed to, so im super interested to see your opinions, theories, and personal strength ratings grow and change!!! Gecko got battle skill diff'd for sure and I agree with yalls points, but I think the important takeaway is the parallel narratives between aspiring Pirate Kings. So Moria taking 1000 shadows basically backfired on him. We learn that Moria isn’t in his prime anymore. He been to the new world before and was utterly defeated by kaido to the point where kaido even killed all his crew mates. Moria was defeated and became a shell of his past self. So when he took all those shadows. He thought he was gonna be able to handle but hw couldn’t. Because he’s not as strong as his past self

very true, especially after an upcoming arc, the powerscaling gets both very in depth but also a smidge inconsistent. Oda does eventually find his stride later in the story after the TS though, and everything really clicks into place via hindsight as well which is awesome. Also yes! Originally the story was meant to be a much smaller scale but everything expanded because Oda has too many ideas

The powerscaling in one piece can be very wishy-washy sometimes it's best not to dwell on it too much until you've seen a good portion of the show. Apparently, the seven warlords or the new world weren't intially meant to exist (someone correct me if i'm wrong) Luffy was meant to come into contact with a yonko when they entered the grand line. Oda loves his worldbuilding but he didn't have everything mapped out lol

Small correction, Kuma only came to report to Moria that a new Warlord had been appointed, probably because of the island being in the middle of a foggy dangerous sea they couldn’t reach him through simpler means. Though it can be assumed and possibly implied that the government sent their “loyal dog” to also check up on Moria while reporting due to their concern of the Strawhats’s threat level, as Kuma mentioned in those few epsiodes back.
