Ehre wasn’t completely wrong to call Fern’s magic “characterless,” because it kinda is. As Übel points out, many mages see their magic as an expression of their personality, and they take pride in creating unique techniques. Since every mage can use basic attack/defense spells, Fern relying only on those (bcs Frieren told her she doesn’t need anything else) can feel dismissive to those who pour themselves into developing personal magic. I don’t agree with Ehre, but I get why a mage with her values would see it that way. Her name literally means “honor”, and she clearly honors individuality in magic. But Frieren’s approach is valid too. With her experience, she knows basic spells are often the most efficient. Ehre’s own spell requires her to fly while firing; flight alone must drain a ton of mana. It’s flashy and effective, sure, but not exactly efficient. Someone mentioned in this or the previous episode that personal spells are usually unrefined. Frieren’s training philosophy for Fern is basically the Bruce Lee idea: “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times". Modern mages seem more like “jack of all trades, master of none".

its my first time watching this show, and it has been phenomenal. Mad House is truly goated Blue Lock is a show that dives a bit deeper into the concept of luck, and basically people that are "lucky" are those that act and put themselves into positions where they can draw the winning number, while others sit on sidelines and complain. blue lock kinda got the one punch man treatment in season 2, where pretty much until the last few episodes, the animation is mid, but even so i think its the most hype show in recent years and worth checking out

One of the toughest delivered lines from Wirbel here when Ubel tried to attack him from behind: "you'll turn an unnecessary kill back into a necessary one". Love Wirbel's character and leave it to Frieren, one of the rare shows that can introduce a character and make us feel connected and intrigued in half an episode. While other shows struggle to make us care for an MC after 10 episodes.

I agree with Cannon that Frieren is peak. Frieren lost to Solo Leveling Season 1 (not Season 2) because the voting period started after Season 2 of Solo Leveling aired. It was just unlucky for Frieren, it would have won otherwise. Also the upcoming episodes of the season (and this arc) that the Geks will watch are one of the best, especially the last 4 episodes to finish the season. Can't wait to see their reaction to Serie scenes in the upcoming episodes. :D

Flamme was so right about teaching Frieren how to suppress her mana. It's not even just for demons, but human enemies as well. They get confident and lower their defenses. Just imagine, if Frieren was walking around with all that mana, the people in this competition would know they can't win in that aspect, so they'd try to outsmart her, which might succeed. But people thinking their strength is enough to beat Frieren, makes it much easier for Frieren to win. She just has to catch them off guard.

this episode is one of my favorites in season 1, completely agree with cannons enthusiasm. seeing all the different types of magic (land, scharf, richter) and ways they can be utilized (wirbel's binding spell), specifics of spells (wirbel's binding spell), and some lore on the essence of magic (from ubels perspective), is just so magical to me. pun intended. it's just so awesome to see so much fresh content and expansion after 20 odd episodes of basic magic and smaller scale spells from a select few mages.

carter 100%. the powerscaling and overall scale of mages and magic was a lot simpler and concise before this arc. the reason is because frieren has no real need to expand outside of the basics, given that she's as strong as she is. that also applies to fern, who she taught with the same ideology, that mages of this era can be defeated with only basic offensive and defensive magic.

this ones for jack (since i heard him grumbling about wirbel and how he should've just caught one himself)--- its a little subtle, but it does show and tell us why its so hard to catch a stille. they're practically impossible to detect by mana, so unless you get really lucky and stumble across one, it's just not possible to catch one by ordinary means (excluding frierens party, they had a plan that would only work with the mages in that party). its why sense, proctor of the second test, was calling genau (first test proctor) out for the design of this test. it's not a test to gauge the skill of the mage and ability to catch a stille, its to see who's good in battle and can come out victorious against other mages. the easiest, and most logical way to pass this exam is to simply steal a stille from another party right before the exam is over. its practically a glorified pub fight or a CoD FFA game. that's why wirbel and his party decided to attack fern's party for their stille. wirbel had ALL the tools at his disposal to catch a stille, and simply couldn't due to the unfairness of the test, which relies on luck. it's not that he didnt want to catch one legitimately, he just never got the chance.

Have always loved the little touch with Wirbel when he's facing that "army" of children and he wears a mask that he doesn't seem to have on him during the exam. It's a well documented phenomenon with human beings that we are much more willing to engage in negative behaviors when we have a mask obscuring our faces from others, so him feeling a need to wear a mask when confronted with the prospect of killing children speaks to how he isn't just a straight up murderer who delights in killing. For all he's been through, he still feels remorse and shame and wants to keep his humanity. If Ubel (Goth Girl Sukuna) had been in his shoes during that momemt, safe to say she wouldn't have bothered with a mask.

Denken likely can't sense any mana fluctuation from Frieren's mana suppression which is what gives him such confidence. That and old human mages in this verse tend to be pretty powerful, Zoltraak and many other spells Frieren uses were originally invented by humans which she learned from them, humans progress much faster but obviously don't live anywhere near as long.

Yeah Denken thinking he stands a chance against Frieren is likely due to the fact that he’s unaware of her suppressing her mana. He sees the "old experienced mage" level of mana on her that some characters like Heiter or one of the proctors remarked her to possess and probably overestimates how he stacks up against that.

I think something to think about with Denken and how you guys felt he was very flip floppy with his comments to "not kill the girls" but that he'd "crush" Frieren is that he is an imperial mage and an older one at that. It's clearly implied as not an easy title to acquire and it was also stated that he has cut down "enemies" that stood in the way of that goal, so he's not above killing. He also very clearly knows about Frieren and must have an idea of what she'd be capable of to have been the mage from the party of heroes. So ya, to him the girls are just that....girls, Richter just needs to occupy them while he solely focuses on Frieren because if he doesn't...she'll probably crush him, but he believes he can take her and she herself has stated she's been bested by other human mages before. So this is a legitimately pretty intense moment, and it's gonna be awesome to see how it progresses in the next episode! Anyways, hopefully that helps give you some insight about Denken, just from what's provided in this episode.

I like Frieren over solo leveling because of one thing. Frieren is telling a story, it's about the journey. It introduces characters organically. You don't know who they are when they are introduced, yes, something they act exactly how they look, but also their look doesn't match how they act. You don't know, and that makes me want to know more about the character. They try to limit exposition and maximize show, don't tell, mind frame. Not every anime takes the time to do that.

Idk but to me it still feels like Canon is overestimating Frieren. This isn’t Solo Leveling or Dragon Ball, she isn’t this GOD who can just destroy entire planets lol. She even straight up told us that she lost 11 times to other mages and she didn’t defeat the demon king by herself obviously. The world building to me at least implies that there are things like favorable/unfavorable matchups in this verse. Sometimes you can be literally stronger/weaker than someone but you just match up better/worse against a specific opponents abilities. Also don’t get me wrong she is definitely EXTREMELY powerful and yes she probably kills 99% of the people in this verse, but with what we know about elves and how long lived they are as well as how people tend to forget heroic deeds or in modern terms their "feats" due to the passage of time we don’t really know the power scaling. We don’t even know how Kraft would stack up to Frieren let alone Serie, who to me honestly the way they’re building her up seems to be a prime example of someone thats way stronger than Frieren.

To clarify - the surprise at how many spells Fern was casting wasn't about her mana supression. Her ability to control that many attack spells is just in and of itself a ridiculous showing. Fern has basically committed herself to being a Zoltraak and defensive magic specialist while all the other mages have worked on other types of offensive spells. Fern's hyper-proficiency in it is something that nobody in that test has likely ever seen before aside from Frieren.
