Great week, great reaction. Impel down can definitely drag but it has some crucial lore drops and world building - the likes of which we haven't really seen in previous arcs. Personally a lot of draw to this arc is the uniqueness of having Luffy solo an adventure; mans is basically causing a commotion in the world's most epic prison all on his own

I wish people would stop hyping up upcoming arcs so much😭It's fine to like it, but not to the extent of glazing the next 100 eps 💀I remember when I watched Impel down for the first time, I definitely wanted to snooze a couple of times but overall I still really like Impel down. I also think a lot of people, me included binged these episodes at once so the Buggy/Mr.3 gags just blends together and doesn't feel as constant as they actually are. The thing is...unfortunately Toei lingers or adds filler on the biggest gripes you guys and everyone has with the anime. We don't get nearly as much Hannyabal or Buggy/Mr.3 in the manga. But that's why I don't think anyone can really be upset with the takes on Impel Down not being great, cause they way you're consuming the show is through the anime, 2 eps per watch session. That's gonna make for a different experience with the show, and that's fine!

This arc def has some slower/fillerish episodes like some do, but all together pretty good & sets up for later episodes. I remember skipping some parts the first time I watched it (mainly during these past episodes). You’ll know when it’s abt to get good tho! I think some of the overkill jokes kill some of the anticipation for the next watch so def get the takes.

So we can assume that hes been experimenting with his own hormones to make himself a super soldier. Also, i like this arc lol, i cant call it peak but i find it so funny lol. lots of hind sight lore drops too. this being said, i also think that thriller bark was hilarious lmao. youve gotta love OP for the journey, not every episode is gonna be peak, but they will 100% have a 10/10 epsidoe somewhere along the way

For me One Piece was kinda a nice show but I could never put it even in my top 10 because of the pacing and like genuinely one of the worst moments I have seen in anime. I know people get excited when it comes to a new arc, but it kind of irritates me when people throw the word peak around when there’s a difference between a peak arc e.g. Sabaody and peak MOMENTS e.g. Nothing Happened. Impel down is not peak but it does have peak moments with good storytelling. It’s unfortunate it’s brought down by bad pacing but trust me later later on it gets worse i’m sure Jack will tell you guys though :)

I really like watching people react to my favourite shows and one day while I was on a road trip your “ Anime haters watch one piece for 12 hours straight “ video just popped up and i enjoyed it and really liked you guys, after that i started binging all your reactions until I finally caught up to the weekly Patreon uploads when you guys were in Thriller Bark. I love One Piece so much, but as a person im not that fan of most of the show’s gags especially since most of the time they get dragged out because of toei studio let alone the filler they add. So while catching up not just because of those said scenes only but also cause because i would like to get every minute possible of you guys reacting to the show i thought about writing to you guys so many times to point out that you should please use One Pace and Other times I've thought about asking why you don't just increase the number of episodes you watch a week. I've also often wondered if you'd ever do a 'One Piece Week.' I've always had these ideas bouncing around personally as i said i had these ideas for months, really wanting you guys to shake up your schedule and now that we're getting close to Marineford, a lot of people are asking for the exact same thing so it would make sense for me to agree with them but for the exact same reason, i don’t. My reason for that is is we all stuck it out and watched through all the different arcs and the inconsistent pacing and we still enjoyed and for me Tuesdays and Thursdays became somewhat the highlight of my week because of yall and now that you’re near what people consider the “PEAK” arc I feel like it wouldn’t make sense to suddenly change the upload schedule whether it's with a one piece week or increasing the episodes per drop because that would mean it will end faster and that’s something we would’ve liked with the longer or more stretched arcs such as the one you now watch. Also because i wouldn’t want you guys to get overwhelmed with the change of what you were used to all this time i really want to make sure that you are capable of giving every single thing that happens in this arc what it deserves just like you always did with everything in the show. I know I wrote a novel here, and you're probably not planning on changing anything anyway, but I still wanted to share my thoughts with you guys p.s i just read carter’s comment about cooking something for marineford so i think what i said wouldn’t be for nothing after all 😆

The level 5 vs level 6 confusion comes from the fact that level 6 is a secret even to the prisoners of impel down - Luffy thought that Ace was on level 5 due to Buggy telling him that that was the lowest level and therefore most likely where he would be held - and is only known of by the people living in Newkama Land and the guards

We're in to the real trash arcs from here on, Marineford is gonna be a slog to get through hope yall can get through it. But to be fr people need to stop calling everything peak and hyping up arcs, it just gives others expectations and an idea of how "good" they want the arc to be. It removes that slight blind reaction aspect, so when someone doesn't vibe with said arc it only just ends up making them more disappointed with it, cuz it didn't give what you wanted from the arc.

There hasn't been one arc in One Piece that doesn't have at least some goofy gags, so I get confused why we're surprised when the tone would shift from serious to goofy when that's been the whole show. Oda has stated his desire to write what he finds interesting and fun, actively trying to subvert reader expectations that battle manga must be consistently serious. He balances serious themes with lightheartedness. Yes, Toei sometimes stretches it out, which could be a hit or a miss, it definitely depends (I have personally beef with Toei for other things). But I feel like for this show, you know One Piece doesn't fail when it's time to get serious. We can go from a funny gag of Sanji and Zoro beefing to them both sacrificing their life for their captain. We can go from the reveal of Duval to us encountering Celestial Dragons and more corruption. We can go from Luffy having a funny sequence with Buggy, Mr. 3, and Bon Clay entering level 4 to later Luffy fighting everything he has with Magellan and ending up almost dying if it wasn't for Bon Clay. The " 100+ episodes of peak" people were saying means good storytelling nonstop. I do agree we should stop overly saying peak so the Geks won't have a certain expectation. But again, with One Piece you know when it's time to get serious it's damn good. As soon as you hear "Kaizokuō Ni Ore Wa Naru!" it's time to lock in I understand other perspectives, but I don’t think filler or even the gags that some think is “bad” overweighs how good this arc is. Granted we’re not done yet, so I’ll leave that to the future.

Impel down is so much better than the maiden island arc. I don't get any hate or guff from this arc. You have peak fights and mid-lows but the arc isn't near enough low when compared to others. To be honest I think this arc is more fun than the next on a re-watch or re-read.

The crashouts in the comments because of Buggy D Goat and Galdino's shenanigans are so funny 😂. Their duo is literally Dumb and Dumber so I understand the humour might not be hitting for some, but outside of their team-up with Bon Clay in ep 437, they've only been on-screen for 10 minutes in the last 7 episodes (~140 minutes). It's not like they're taking up half the screen time of every episode.

The issue with "100 episodes of peak" is that people just remember all the highlights from these episodes because that's what stands out in your memory. The Buggy/Mr. 3 stuff I don't know if anyone loves, but I don't mind it, like I'm not bothered to see them, but for those of us who have been watching One Piece for decades at this point it's like watching a rerun of a show on TV (in the age of streaming will younger people even know what that means?). Some things you're just stockholm'ed into casually enjoying. On the other hand if you're still newer to One Piece and you're just looking for that peak everywhere then yeah they're gonna feel like that annoying thing dragging the show out from showing you what you really want, so I get that. Honestly, I don't mind the jokes and silliness because they have a special kind of humor that I love. Besides, OP is a story that builds slowly, not every episode is shocking or crucial, but they always contribute something to the plot. Other anime with a darker tone and better pacing are intense, and I love them too, but they don't last long. For a long-term experience, OP is the best.

Great way to describe it. 375-500 is undisputed the best span of eps in the series bar none. Of course there’s some slow moments and weak eps, but that span as a whole is peak anime without question.

W outro. Most of this arc is unfortunately such a drag in the anime and kills a lot of the momentum gained from Saboady and Amazon Lilly. There has been 14 manga chapters of Impel Down so far inclusive of these episodes which could be done in 6-8 episodes with proper pacing, instead of the 16 episodes it's been filler inserted and padded out to be. I understand the decision to watch regularly but one pace easily would've made this a better experience

I can relate to your first take on this arc. It was definitely not a stand out for me and I didn’t understand why some people had this so high on their lists… However, After being caught up with one piece for many years now and haven rewatched most arcs via yt reaction. I feel I can confidently say it’s a good arc. Standard good arc. I’d actually personally say it’s a very good. Somewhere in between ‘very good’ and ‘great’ but maybe not quite there yet 🤔 Wouldn’t be mad at a ‘great arc’ tho and wouldn’t be the someone who’d argue it wasn’t part of the peak run. Unless in a discourse where we’re being 100% objective and nit picky etc etc but for the most part you know what I mean. Anyways - 7.9 (my objective rating) -8.4 (my low-mid level op glaze rating) (For a reference, I find myself siding with carters take on most anime openings. Take that as you will lol) My main take away would be: - I don’t blame you for the view on where we’re at right now - You will like it more each week going forward. The "100 episodes of peak" take really means "100 episodes of peak story telling", rather than "100 peak episodes in a row". It's not gonna be 100 straight 9.5+ episodes, but the experience as a whole will be incredible. And this generational run of storytelling actually started with Kuma vs Strawhats in Ep 375 and will continue until the early 500s. Has Oda not been cooking with the end of Thriller Bark, Sabaody, Amazon Lily, and a decent chunk of Impel Down? The best is yet to come.

A lot of people are wishing for One Pace, and I can understand the reasoning. Toei’s padding does dilute the show a lot, some arcs more than others. However, it’s not a holistically better choice, but rather a tradeoff. While you cut out all of the padding and dumb filler, you also remove the ”adaptation” from the anime. One Pace deliberately cuts out pretty much everything not in the manga, so inevitably some amazing anime original scenes will also be cut. By watching One Pace, it’ll almost be like you’re watching the manga rather than an anime adaptation of the manga. I’m not saying one is inherently better than the other, just that it’s something to consider.

Still what makes me happy is having Carter in the mix as someone who isn’t as hyped as everyone else during the big moments, but is also unfazed by the “bad” ones and always stays locked in. This is the reason I recommend One Pace for Impel Down, the Buggy Mr. 3 stuff is filler, the anime adds loads of unfunny jokes, and Toei didn't pull the tone shift off like the manga did when Magellan dropped in. In the Manga from that point onwards the tone gets very dark, until Iva's intro and Luffy's recovery. it's a 8.5 to 9 in the manga in the anime it's like a 6.5

Don’t worry guys I’m not holding this against Oda or the show, I think i was just super excited/dreading the Ace execution and the tone felt very serious and now it’s been put off with a lot of gags and jokes/filler which makes the arc not feel as emotional or important like the previous did. Even the execution countdown doesn’t feel imposing because it’s show right after a goofy 3 and Buggy scene. All that aside I know that the we are close to peak so I’m super pumped, just giving my real thoughts in real time!

I wasn’t really one of the people saying the next 100 episodes were gonna be straight peak cuz those ppl should know that the moments they’re thinking about, still takes some patience and build up to get to within the whole stretch, but impel down as a whole is still a good arc. Curious how you’ll feel once finishing the whole arc. To me it’s definitely better than Amazon lily which you guys like so much. There’s more stakes, characters coming back, build up to marineford and more juicy stuff in the arc that just gets mixed with some silly/annoying stuff that depends on the person if they can tolerate or not. To be fair, very hot take, and I'm insisting that this is only my opinion and experience, but I don't think there's such a thing as '100 straight episodes of peak' in all of One Piece. In every arc (unless it's really short), there's always a point where stuff is dragging or scenes are repetitive. That's just One Piece and you either get used to it or don't (but I tend to remember those past arcs with fondness, usually, because the peak moments carry it for me, still, it's true that it feels different when you actually watch it). That said, to me, I feel like Impel Down is not too bad. Idk if One Pace would solve that, I'm not familiar with it, but it'll probably be better than without it.

Those scenes that pained him the most were literally filler - especially those long sequences with buggy and Mr 3 in the previous episodes were Toei's padding. (Those scenes that u kept mistaking for Oda setting those characters up for smth big- but it’s just padding) If you look at the manga chapters for this arc, its crazy how much Toei stretched it to infinity. 4 episodes a week = 3.4 manga chapters - try making any arc good with that filler bloated pacing. It slows it down to a crawl. Thats how much the story is diluted with mediocrity and destroys its reputation...

here to defend my "next 100 episodes are peak" claim - I will definitely admit that because this is a rewatch for me, everything is a lot better. I'm just more attached to the characters because I know where they end up in the future + I've had more time to engage with them, so even the lows of buggy and mr 3 are really funny for me, like i've loved every episode of this arc. BUT i can definitely see how, if I put myself in the shoes of a first time watcher such as yall, that this arc definitely starts a little stinky. That I concede. I think when I said next 100 episodes I was lowkey thinkin about myself on the rewatch vibe not realizing the gags you guys would have to be introduced to for the first time😭 HOWEVER I definitely believe that from this episode on, its like straight heat, and ESPECIALLY the next arc will make up for so much of the early slog here!

That’s a very fair take, I think since obviously most of us have watched Marineford, the setup of the characters that come into play, that will also have huge roles in Marineford, and the events that are about to take place in impel down is what makes impel down and Marineford a 2 in 1 arc. They’re obviously very different but tie in together as Marineford advances, and yeah, you guys might not feel the same after all is done, but I have a small feeling you guys will appreciate what its role is and what it’s trying to setup, despite the arc being extremely slow.
