I really love how easily Frieren took Kanne and Lawine under her wing despite her complaints and I love her as a mentor. She never fights her mentees’ battles for them but she also doesn’t leave them to struggle unnecessarily if she can help it. I think this series does teachers really well in general Also, not only was Denken brawling for that stille great, I like that he gave that failing party a chance to fight for it a little longer. I agree with Denken—it wouldn’t matter to me that I’d be failing regardless. If someone in my group died for it I’d feel wretched just handing some other party a freebie

Lmao where did Mckay get isekai from, he prob relates fantasy with isekai. Also Frieren started serialization in the Weekly Shonen sunday mag so its a Shonen anime. Shonen is moreso a demographic than a genre, which has a lot of mangas from so many different genres, romance, action, mystery, sci-fi, sports, fantasy, etc etc

My guess is 10,000 as the Elve’s lifespan; 100x of a humans. And I think frieren is around 2000 years old(20yo human body progression), which could work as frieren looked the same 1000 years ago when she met flamme which she would have a body of a 10yo human which she did look like and some women can look like that at 20. A bit of throw guess from me

Shounen isn't a genre, its just a demographic. Even as recently as the beginning of this reaction series, I used to make the mistake of thinking that it was more of a genre or category, since a lot of anime websites present it as such. However, the only thing that determines what is shounen, seinen, etc, is simply what type of magazine its published in. Its really the genre and themes that are important. So don't put too much weight on whether or not a certain manga/anime should be in a certain demographic, because as I've learned it honestly doesn't matter.

My guess is elves live to like ~5k years... I assume Frieren is like ~1200 years old right now (met Flamme ~1000 years ago, but had already been alive for some time at that point but still a "child elf"). Serie has probably lived at least another 800-1000 years over Frieren, given she has collected all spells known to mankind, and Frieren isn't even close as she continues to look for spells even though she's been alive this long. Also since Kraft sees Frieren as someone relatively "young", it's as if he's referring to Frieren as someone in her 20-30s equivalent in human years

On Serie's "burning ambition" comment regarding Frieren - any mage with great ambition wouldn't turn down that kind of offer because getting whatever spell they want would be a huge help in fulfilling that ambition. A really driven person with a singular goal in mind would have a spell in mind to suit that goal, but that's because they view magic as just a tool to other ends. Frieren, on the other hand, just loves magic. It's not a tool to a particular end, it's basically just her passion/hobby. She may have gone on to defeat the Demon King, but that was something she was roped into by Himmel and almost rejected had it not been for Himmel happening to say the same exact thing Frieren said to Flamme 1000 years prior. Aside from that, she just walks the land, collects spells, and generally keeps a low profile to the point that she isn't well known by contemporary mages. She just doesn't have a burning ambition and that's why Serie dismisses her. Ironically, that lack of ambition is why she could defeat the Demon King. Demons knew almost nothing about her then (and still know very little now), so she was something they couldn't plan for. That's literally how she beat Aura - Aura had no idea how old Frieren was and that made her grossly misjudge her mana pool and experience, along with Frieren's mana suppression. Her low profile and peaceful nature have hidden what a real monster Frieren is.

i actually really like the way it couldve been done as canon described. denken says he likes magic for the chase. frieren says smth like "ah, i see you're a man of good taste". she does her thing, serie says "thats how you say hello after a thousand years?" then the beginning of the next episode, they show frieren and serie meeting, and frieren says she likes magic for the chase, and it both answers a burning question in a very satisfying way AND the parallel wouldnt feel as... spelled out for you? sometimes the way this show delivers its parallels can feel kinda, "get it? cause himmel said the exact same thing in the exact same place? get it? isnt that cool?" i love it but yeah lmao

I think of the peaceful era thing as just another part of everything else they were saying about visualization. If you can't visualize a peaceful era, and you think killing the demon king will bring about a peaceful era, then you can't fully visualize a spell to kill the demon king. Like Richter said about the bluff of controlling the water in his body, if it can't be visualized then it can't be done. Doesn't mean someone else can't, but just you can't cast the spell yourself without the full visualization.

Also I’m sure they age. Life span are just super long. I also think maybe elves can be petit in this verse? And maybe that’s a factor to why they look so young. They probably only really “mature”, like think a 25-30 year old person compared to a teenager. You definitely age different and your body changes even going from a young adult to late 20s/30s. So for the elves they’ll look like there teens/early twenties for centuries. Maybe they age somewhat normal and then during puberty slow down. I can’t imagine a toddler elf for like 300 years 😂

I love how well rounded these characters are and how quickly you become interested/attached in such a short time. It’s so good. I think it’s true to life as well. There’s been so many people I’ve met and while time goes on and maybe you never see them again, it’s so cool to meet and talk with people and become interested in other humans. Everyone truly is unique. And I think that real life aspect is represented so well in this show.

I love the reason why frieren broke the barrier was just to give her teammate a chance to use their own specialty magic. It wasnt even to show off or anything. It's why she was confident her teammates could beat that guy and even praised them after. Frieren from the Himmel era wasn't that thoughtful, his death really changed her in those subtle ways.

I really liked when you pointed out that in many other shonen, a character like Serie would just be a typical antagonist. But Frieren makes a real effort to show, even in a short amount of time, that its characters are multi-layered individuals rather than simple tropes. They have backstories that shape their goals and behavior, and not many writers can pull that off. In any medium. It’s refreshing to see. It also highlights a sharp contrast between the humanoid characters in Frieren and the demons, who really are portrayed as evil for evil’s sake. No hidden motives, no tragic pasts, just pure malice.

Serie is probably older than Frieren, based on the way she speaks to her. In Japanese, you use different grammar and speech depending on who you're talking to (whether they’re older, younger, a senior etc.). Serie talks to Frieren as if she’s a child, similar to how Kraft addresses her. Frieren's world (like many Demon King animes) is inspired by RPG/DnD games. Elves aren't immortal. They age. Just slower. Similar to Gnomes or Giants sometimes. So maybe a 1000 years in Elf years is like 20 human years. Who knows.
